  • The concentrations of organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) in fine aerosols were determined from the samples collected at the two background sites of Kosan in Cheju Island and Kangwha. Samplings were carried out during the spring and winter of 1996 and the fall and winter of 1997. PM25 particles were collected on the prefired quartz filters for 24 hours and analyzed by the selective thermal oxidation method. The concentrations of OC at the sites were higher than those commonly observed from clean areas around the world, but those of EC at both sites were lower than, or comparable to, other clean areas in the world. Both the OC and EC levels at Kangwha were higher than those at Kosan. According to backward trajectory analysis, most air pollutants collected at the two sites were from China. It was found that the OC and EC concentrations in air masses from southern China were higher than those from northern China.

  • An intensive field study was carried out during Aug. 1993 in Seoul to study the characteristics of summertime visibility and diurnal trend of ionic composition of ambient particles. A transmissometer, nephelometer with heated and unheated inlets, PM3 fine particle sampler, and cascade impactor were used to measure optical and particle properties of ambient air. During this study period, a weak smog episode has occurred. Light scattering by particles is the most dominant factor on total light extinction. The effect of light absorption by particles in Seoul is much higher than other major cities in U.S.A. throughout the summer and fall with relatively constant values. The effect of water on $b_{sp}$ was small during the period. The particle size distribution shows a typical bimodal one. Sulfate, ammonium, chloride, and nitrate are the major chemical species in fine fraction aerosols, about 30% of toral mass concentration. Concentraion of sulfate is higher during the daytime while those of nitrate and chloride are higher during the nighttime. Ammonium concentration is constant through the daytime.

  • Total suspended particulate matters (TSP) were collected based on a size segregation method by a cascade impactor for 6 consecutive years (form Dec. 1989 to sep. 1994) in the Kyung Hee University-Suwon Campus, and 6 trace metals (Ca, Si, Fe, Pb, Cu, Zn) were determined by an x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. Total number of samples collected during the study are 118 sets and each set of sample comsists of 9 filters. The levels of TSP and 6 trace metals were then used to examine seasonal and annual variations with respects to their size distributions. For statistical analyses, raw data were initially transformed by both logarithmic and root transformating to approximately normalize them, and then size distribution functions for each trace element were separately developed season-to-season by a regression analysis in order to obtain maximum amount of physical information, Subsequently, each developed model was verified by comparing with supervised data collected on 1994. The result showed that each prediction model was in good agreement except the fall, partly due to lack of the data collected on fall, 1994.

  • The purpose of this report is to describe the lidar measurement of depolarization ratios of particulate matter (Depolarization Ratio of Yellow Sand) and to discuss the transformation of aerosols due to Yellow Sand event. The scattering profile shows high level during Yellow Sand event and scattering layers are thicker as compared to other seasons in about 3 .sim. 8km, and the values and mode height of scattering ratio corresponed with depolarization ratio. A distribution of total depolarization ratio during the observation period was 44.7 percent among total cases of 0.03 < Dt < 0.5 with scattering ratio > 30 and relative humidity < 30 was satisfied (popular Yellow Sand type).

  • Various aspects of the air quality problems caused by ambient particles in and around the city of Seoul are discussed. First, the trend of the air quality in Seoul over time is investigated along with the types and quantities of energy consumption in Seoul. It was found that the general air quality in Seoul has improved over the last twenty years because of a change in the primary fuel used in Korea. However, the visibility in Seoul, a representation of the ambient particle concentration, is still worse than in other cities in Korea. In the air around Seoul, secondary particle generation might be as important as particles directly emitted from within the city or transported from outside.

  • Active upwelling air motion in every summer over the Tibetan plateau is an essential process controlling activities of asian summer monsoon which affects water cycle and precipitation in eastern Asia. Large heating rate of surface air on the high plateau with average height of 4000m is considered to cause such large scale upwelling over the plateau. (omitted)

  • We estimate atmospheric radiative heating effect of aerosols, based on AErosol RObotic NETwork (AERONET) and lidar observations and radiative transfer calculations. The column radiation model (CRM) is modified to ingest the AERONET measured variables (aerosol optical depth, single scattering albedo, and asymmetric parameter) and subsequently calculate the optical parameters at the 19 bands from the data obtained at four wavelengths. The aerosol radiative forcing at the surface and the top of the atmosphere, and atmospheric absorption on pollution (April 15, 2001) and dust (April 17~18, 2001) days are 3~4 times greater than those on clear-sky days (April 14 and 16, 2001). The atmospheric radiative heating rate (${\Delta}H$) and heating rate by aerosols (${\Delta}H_{aerosol}$) are estimated to be about $3\;K\;day^{-1}$ and $1{\sim}3\;K\;day^{-1}$ for pollution and dust aerosol layers. The sensitivity test showed that a 10% uncertainty in the single scattering albedo results in 30% uncertainties in aerosol radiative forcing at the surface and at the top of the atmosphere and 60% uncertainties in atmospheric forcing, thereby translated to about 35% uncertainties in ${\Delta}H$. This result suggests that atmospheric radiative heating is largely determined by the amount of light-absorbing aerosols.

  • Solar radiation is scattered and absorbed atmospheric compositions in the atmosphere before it reaches the surface and, then after reflected at the surface, until it reaches the satellite sensor. Therefore, consideration of the radiative transfer through the atmosphere is essential for the quantitave analysis of the satellite sensed data, specially at shortwave region. This study examined a feasibility of using radiative transfer code for estimating the atmospheric effects on satellite remote sensing data. To do this, the flux simulated by LOWTRAN7 is compared with CAGEX data in shortwave region. The CAGEX (CERES/ARM/GEWEX Experiment) data provides a dataset of (1) atmospheric soundings, aerosol optical depth and albedo, (2) ARM(Aerosol Radiation Measurement) radiation flux measured by pyrgeometers, pyrheliometer and shadow pyranometer and (3) broadband shortwave flux simulated by Fu-Liou's radiative transfer code. To simulate aerosol effect using the radiative transfer model, the aerosol optical characteristics were extracted from observed aerosol column optical depth, Spinhirne's experimental vertical distribution of scattering coefficient and D'Almeida's statistical atmospheric aerosols radiative characteristics. Simulation of LOWTRAN7 are performed on 31 sample of completely clear days. LOWTRAN's result and CAGEX data are compared on upward, downward direct, downward diffuse solar flux at the surface and upward solar flux at the top of the atmosphere(TOA). The standard errors in LOWTRAN7 simulation of the above components are within 5% except for the downward diffuse solar flux at the surface(6.9%). The results show that a large part of error in LOWTRAN7 flux simulation appeared in the diffuse component due to scattering mainly by atmispheric aerosol. For improving the accuracy of radiative transfer simulation by model, there is a need to provide better information about the radiative charateristrics of atmospheric aerosols.
