The results of study on the active control of naturally occurring combustion oscillations with a single dominant frequency in an atmospheric dump combustor are presented. Control was achieved by an oscillatory infection of secondary fuel at the dump plane. A high speed solenoid valve with a maximum frequency of 250Hz was used as the actuator and a sound level meter, located at the combustor exit, measured the pressure fluctuations which served as the feedback signal for the control loop. Instability characteristics were mapped over a range of mean mixing section velocities from 6.7 m/s-9.3 m/s and with three mixing conditions. Different fuel/air mixing conditions were investigated by introducing varying percentages of primary fuel at two locations, one at the entrance to the mixing section and one 6 mixing tube diameters upstream of the dump plane. Control studies were conducted at a mean velocity of 9.3 m/s, with an air temperature of $415^{\circ}C$, and from flame blowout to the stoichiometric condition.
The objective of this study is a qualitative comparison between line-integrated OH chemiluminescence ($OH{\ast}$) image and its Abel inversion image at different phase of the oscillating pressure field. PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) measurements were conducted under non-reacting conditions to see the global flow structure. Also NOx emission was measured to investigate the effect of fuel-air premixing on combustion instability and emission characteristics. Experiments were carried out in an atmospheric pressure, laboratory-scale dump combustor operating on natural gas. Combustion instabilities in present study exhibited a longitudinal mode with a dominant frequency of ${\sim}341.8$ Hz, which corresponded to a quarter wave mode of combustor. Heat release and pressure waves were in-phase when instability occurred. Results gave an insight about the location where the strong coherence of pressure and heat release existed. Also an additional information on active control to suppress the combustion instabilities was obtained. For lean premixed combustion, strong correlation between $OH{\ast}$ and NOx emissions was expected largely due to the exponential dependence of thermal NOx mechanism on flame temperature.
To search for and study the nature of the long-periodic variations of massive stars, we have been carrying out a precise radial velocity (RV) survey for supergiants. Here, we present high-resolution RV measurements of ${\alpha}$ Per which lies near the Cepheid instability strip from November 2005 to February 2011 using the fiber-fed Bohyunsan Observatory Echelle Spectrograph (BOES) at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory (BOAO). The orbital solution yields a period of 129 days, a 2K amplitude of 80 m/s, and an eccentricity of 0.1. Assuming a possible stellar mass of 7.3 $M{\bigodot}$, we estimate the minimum mass for the planetary companion to be 7.5 MJup with the orbital semi-major axis of 0.97 AU. We do not find the correlation between RV variations and chromospheric activity indicator (Ca II H & K region). The Hipparcos photometry and bisector velocity span (BVS) do not show any obvious correlations with RV variations. These analyses suggest that ${\alpha}$ Per is a pulsating supergiant that hosts an exoplanet. If the 129 days variations of ${\alpha}$ Per do not come from an exoplanet but Cepheid-like pulsations, the theoretical boundary of the Cepheid instability strip may need to be extended to the bluer side.
Tests were conducted at the Florida International University (FIU) Wall of Wind (WOW) to investigate the susceptibility of Variable Message Signs (VMS) to wind induced vibrations due to vortex shedding and galloping instability. Large scale VMS models were tested in turbulence representative of the high frequency end of the spectrum in a simulated suburban atmospheric boundary layer. Data was measured for the $0^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$ horizontal wind approach directions and vertical attack angles ranging from $-4.5^{\circ}$ to $+4.5^{\circ}$. Analysis of the power spectrum of the fluctuating lift indicated that vertical vortex oscillations could be significant for VMS with a large depth ratio attached to a structure with a low natural frequency. Analysis of the galloping test data indicated that VMS with large depth ratios, greater than about 0.5, and low natural frequency could also be subject to galloping instability.
The adaptive optics for compensating for optical wavefront distortion due to atmospheric turbulence has recently been used in systems that improve beam quality by eliminating the aberrations of high power laser beam wavefront. However, unseen-mode, which can not be measured in the wavefront sensor, increases the instability of the laser beam wavefront compensator on the adaptive optics system. As a method for improving such instability, a mathematical method for limiting the number of singular values is used when generating the command matrix involved in generation of the drive command of the wavefront compensator. In the past, however, we have relied solely on experimental methods to determine the limiting range of the singular values. In this paper, we propose a criterion for determining the limiting range of the singular values using the driving characteristics and the correlation technique of the wavefront compensator's actuators and have proved its performance experimentally.
This study evaluates the simulated meteorological fields with a particular focus on the low-level wind, which plays an important role in air pollutants dispersion, under the varying synoptic environment. Additionally, the effects of subgrid-scale orography parameterization and improved topography/land-use data on the simulated low-level wind is investigated. The WRF model version 4.1.3 is utilized to simulate two cases that were affected by different synoptic environments. One case from 2 to 6 April 2012 presents the substantial low-level wind speed over the Korean peninsula where the synoptic environment is characterized by the baroclinic instability. The other case from 14 to 18 April 2012 presents the relatively weak low-level wind speed and distinct diurnal cycle of low-level meteorological fields. The control simulations of both cases represent the systematic overestimation of the low-level wind speed. The positive bias for the case under the baroclinic instability is considerably alleviated by applying the subgrid-scale orography parameterization. However, the improvement of wind speed for the other case showing relatively weak low-level wind speed is not significant. Applying the high-resolution topography and land-use data also improves the simulated wind speed by reducing the positive bias. Our analysis shows that the increased roughness length in the high-resolution topography and land-use data is the key contributor that reduces the simulated wind speed. The simulated wind direction is also improved with the high-resolution data for both cases. Overall, our study indicates that wind forecasts can be improved through the application of the subgrid-scale orography parameterization and high-resolution topography/land-use data.
During the research period, error analysis of the amount of daily precipitation was performed with data obtained from 2DVD, Parsivel, and AWS, and from the results, 79 days were selected as research days. According to the results of a synoptic meteorological analysis, these days were classified into 'LP type, CF type, HE type, and TY type'. The dates showing the maximum daily precipitation amount and precipitation intensity were 'HE type and CF type', which were found to be attributed to atmospheric instability causing strong ascending flow, and leading to strong precipitation events. Of the 79 days, most days were found to be of the LP type. On July 27, 2011 the daily precipitation amount in the Korean Peninsula reached over 80 mm (HE type). The leading edge of the Northern Pacific high pressure was located over the Korean Peninsula with unstable atmospheric conditions and inflow of air with high temperature and high humidity caused ascending flow, 120 mm/h with an average precipitation intensity of over 9.57 mm/h. Considering these characteristics, precipitation in these sample dates could be classified into the convective rain type. The results of a precipitation scale distribution analysis showed that most precipitation were between 0.4-5.0 mm, and 'Rain' size precipitation was observed in most areas. On July 9, 2011, the daily precipitation amount was recorded to be over 80 mm (CF type) at the rainy season front (Jangma front) spreading across the middle Korean Peninsular. Inflow of air with high temperature and high humidity created unstable atmospheric conditions under which strong ascending air currents formed and led to convective rain type precipitation.
This study was aimed to assess combustion stability for coaxial swirl injector and FOOF impinging injector which would be candidates in liquid rocket engine combustors. Simulating combustion tests under atmospheric condition have been conducted by gaseous oxygen and the mixture of methane and propane, using two actual injectors. By analyzing the measured dynamic pressure signals, we have evaluated the combustion stability margin of both injectors by drawing a stability map.
Continuous atmospheric CO$_2$measurements measured during the 1 year(1998.8∼1999.8) at Korea Global Atmosphere Watch Observatory (KGAWO) in Anmyeon-do are analyzed by the selecting method which is recommended by WDCGG to get background CO$_2$. This method can reject data based on two criteria: the instability of CO$_2$ concentration within 1 hour from hourly standard deviation (hourly variability$\leq$ 0.6 ppm first selection) and the large changes in the CO$_2$ concentration from one hour to the nex(∼$\leq$0.3 ppm, second selection). We could obtain hourly background CO$_2$ of 37% in first selection and 20% in second selection during the l year. That are a little less than those of Ryori station in Japan. especially, the cases of background CO$_2$ which is selected were few during the summer. That is caused by affection of vegetation and anthropogenic source. After the selecting methods are applied, the cases which is selected for easterly wind decrease remarkably according to the analysis of wind direction about continuous CO$_2$ .That was affected by anthropogenic source from the east area.
Analysis of wind resources in Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) using long term observation of tall tower located near coast line of the Korean Peninsula were carried out. The data observed at Pohang, Gunsan and Jinhae are wind, temperature and relative humidity with 10 minute interval for one year from 1 October 2010. Vertical turbulence intensity and its deviation at Pohang site is smaller than those of other sites, and momentum flux estimated at 6 vertical layers tend to show small difference in Pohang site in comparison with other sites. The change of friction velocity with atmospheric stability in Pohang is also not so great. These analysis indicate the mechanical forcing due to geographical element of upwind side is more predominant than thermal forcing. On the other hand, wind resources at Gunsan and Jinhae are mainly controlled by thermal forcing.
