An Analysis of Swimming Injuries and Their Rehabilitation (근육 골격계의 질환 및 재활분석(수영선수를 중심으로))

  • While swimming is a very popular competitive sports activity, swimming injuries are unique due to the repetitive nature of the swimming stroke and demanding training programs that can result in upper limb overuse. Therefore, the primary objective of this review was to analyze swimmers' injury areas, injury types by stroke type, and swimming rehabilitation, as well as to discuss safety management for improving swimming performance. In this study, the injuries incurred in swimming events were discussed in the order of upper limb injuries (neck, shoulder, arm, and wrist), lower limb injuries (knee and ankle), and waist injuries. An analysis by stroke type found that shoulder injuries occurred most often with freestyle, backstroke, and butterfly strokes, followed by rotator cuff injury, impingement syndrome, and SLAP (superior labral tear from anterior to posterior) lesions. Knee injuries were associated with the breaststroke, whereas spinal cord injuries occurred with the breaststroke and butterfly stroke. Finally, back injuries were associated with the butterfly stroke. During the freestyle stroke, the shoulder undergoes repetitive overhead movement; hence, shoulder and musculoskeletal pain are the most common and well-documented complaints of swimmers. For safety management, coaches and instructors must ensure that athletes do sufficient warm-up and cool-down exercises to avoid injuries. In case of an injury, they should be familiar with first aid measures so that secondary damage can be prevented with its quick application. In addition, coaches and instructors need to be trained in injury prevention and treatment so that they can provide appropriate rehabilitation treatment for athletes. Although swimming-related injuries cannot be completely eliminated, to reduce them to a minimum, leaders need the knowledge to apply scientific and systematic training principles and methods individualized for each athlete.

The Effect of Occlusal Condition on Physical Fitness and Motor Capacity in Athletes According to Various Types of Mouthguards (마우스가드의 형태가 운동선수의 체력 및 운동능력에 미치는 영향)

  • This study examined the effects of the occlusal stability and a partial coverage mouthguard on physical fitness and motor capacity to determine the importance of the occlusal stability as a possible action mechanism of mouthguards on physical performance. Twenty physical education students were included for measurements of their handgrip strength, back strength, whole body reaction time, flexibility, sidestep test, stork stand test and jumping test according to the following 5 different occlusal conditions: mouth closed position without a mouthguard, with a full coverage mouthguard, with a right partial coverage mouthguard, with a left partial coverage mouthguard and with anterior partial mouthguard. The results revealed no significant difference in any of the measured physical factors between the occlusal conditions with and without a full-coverage mouthguard. On the other hand, a significant difference was observed in whole body reaction between the occlusal conditions with and without the partial coverage mouthguards. Therefore, isokinetic muscle tests on both knee joints and the Wingate anaerobic power test should be performed under the following five occlusal conditions: with or without full-coverage maxillary custom-made mouthguard, with a unilateral right or left partial-coverage maxillary mouthguard and with an anterior partial-coverage maxillary mouthguard. These results suggest that the partial coverage mouthguard had a short-term beneficial effect on agility rather than full coverage mouthguard.

The Comparative Analysis on the Kinematic Variables according to the Types of Stance in the Dead-lift of Snatch Events of Junior Weight Lifters (주니어 역도 선수 인상 종목의 Dead-lift 동작 시 스탠스유형에 따른 운동학적 변인 비교분석)

  • The aim of this study was to provide fundamental data in training to improve athletes' competitiveness through the comparative analysis of kinematic variables according to the types of stance. For this study, the subjects selected 4 Junior Weight lifters. Subjects performed two type(8-type and 11-type) Dead-lift and their performance was sampled at 60frame/sec. using four high-speed digital video cameras. After digitizing images from four cameras, the two-dimensional coordinates were used to produce three-dimensional coordinates of the 15 body segments(20 joint makers and 2 bar makers). And the results were as follows. 1. As for the time required for stances, 8-type motion was faster than 11-type motion. 2. As for the body-center shift in stances, 8-type motion was bigger than 11-type motion in back and forth motion shift, and 11-type motion was bigger than 8-type motion in right and left, up and down motion shift. 3. As for the speed of a body-center and a babel, 8-type motion was faster than 11-type motion. 4. As for the motion-trace of a babel in stances, 8-type motion was bigger than 11-type in back and forth, right and left motion and 11-type motion was bigger than 8-type in up and down motion. 5. As for the body-angles in stances, 8-type motion was bigger than 11-type in the stance angle, and 11-type motion is bigger than 8-type in the angles of a coxa, a knee and an ankle. As a result of the comparative analysis between 8-type and 11-type stance of Junior Weight lifters dead-lift, both were generally similar in variables, but 8-type motion was more stable than 11-type in aspects of time, speed, center shift, angle change.

Analysis of Forefoot Bending Angle in Sprint Spikes According to Bobsleigh Start Lap Time for Development of Korean-Specific Bobsledding Shoes

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze effects of the toe-spring angle of bobsleigh shoes on start speed lap time to develop Korean-specific bobsled shoes suitable for winter environments and for domestic players on the basis of sports science and optimized biomechanical performance. Method: Seven Korean bobsleigh athletes participated in this study, with three pairs of sprint spikes from three companies (Type A, Type B, Type C). To analyze sprint lap time and forefoot bending angle for each shoe, participants were instructed to drag a sled 15 meters from the start line at a maximum sprint. forefoot bending angle was collected by a high speed camera, and lap time speed was measured. Results: Lap time for type B shoes was $3.52{\pm}0.17sec$, type A was $3.55{\pm}0.19sec$, and type C was $3.56{\pm}0.18sec$. Forefoot bending angles were: angle 1, $6.88{\pm}5.55^{\circ}$; angle 2, $9.23{\pm}6.38^{\circ}$; angle 3, $15.56{\pm}5.39^{\circ}$; angle 4, $9.54{\pm}3.85^{\circ}$; angle 5, $9.22{\pm}5.08^{\circ}$; angle 6, $7.66{\pm}6.44^{\circ}$; and angle 7, $4.30{\pm}6.24^{\circ}$ (p<.001). Forefoot bending in angle 3 was as follows: type A, $16.47{\pm}6.01^{\circ}$; type B, $14.30{\pm}4.96^{\circ}$; and type C, $15.90{\pm}5.17^{\circ}$. Conclusion: Hard outsoles and midsoles are better than soft type for reduced start lap time when developing a prototype Korean bobsled shoe.

The Effect of Different Triathlon on Weight, Sodium and Hematological Changes (다른 거리의 철인 3종 경기 시 체중, 나트륨 및 혈액 성분에 미치는 영향)

  • This study examined how differing triathlon durations effect weight, serum sodium concentration, and hematological levels, and investigated relationships between these variables and finishing time as well as between body weight changes and serum sodium following Ironman distance triathlons (IDT) and Olympic distance triathlons (ODT). All eight athletes successfully completed ODT and IOT. We found that the mean body weight decreased following both IDT and ODT and that serum sodium was significantly (p<0.05) increased immediately after IDT, RBC, Hb, Hct, and MCH were significantly (p<0.05) increased immediately after IDT. Hct was significantly (p<0.05) decreased immediately after ODT. MCHC was significantly (p<0.01) increased immediate1y after ODT. In IDT, the percentage of change in body weight correlated to the percentage of change in serum sodium concentrations (r=0.75, p=0.05). In conclusion, our srudy showed that serum sodium concentraion increased in IDT and maintained in ODT, despite significant body weight loss during the races. The percentage of change in body weight was related to serum sodium concentration but unrelated to performance in the triathlon. The changes of RBC, Hb, and Hct values from two different length triathlons were depending on race distance.

A Study about the Training Program for the Kolman Technique on the Horizontal Bars (체조 철봉 콜만 기술동작의 훈련프로그램 적용 및 향상도평가)

  • This study develops a technique training program to enhance the completion of Kolman, the high air flight technique, and applies it to two national athletes of the horizontal bar, one of the gymnastic events, for eight weeks. After that, their improvement was measured through 3D motion analysis to help them elevate their performance. The training program includes swing, hand release, twist, and bar hold, and its implementation produced the results stated below. They were made to practice the motion in the following way. After the hand-standing of giant swing which initiates the motion, they lift their body upward a little bit more. Next, they take their body down almost like a vertical descent and make a deep tap swing. Instead of doing the tap swing which widens the flection of hip and shoulder joints, while body revolution is more emphasized in particular, they release the bar as raising the centroid of their body sufficiently. During the flight, they try to narrow every joint in their body. As a result, the bar's elasticity becomes greatly increased, and since the backing rate of their body gets higher, the centripetal force of the swing is improved that they can release the bar in the higher position. In addition, because they can erect their body faster during the flight, they can perform comfortable twist and revolution in the air. They can also adjust the direction of the flight easily without too much concern for the proper timing of hand release as they rise. Thereby, they can not only maintain adequate distance from the bar for the bar hold but also ensure enough distance for body revolution and twist.

Human Rights Sensitivity of University Varsity Teams (대학운동부의 인권감수성)

  • This study aims to understand human rights sensibility in university varsity teams and to compare and analyze differences in human rights sensibility by variables related to university varsity teams. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, 188 student-athletes from 10 universities were selected. The collected data were analyzed in descriptive analysis, reliability analysis, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe using IBM SPSS 24.0. First, based on the episodes, the episodes with the highest human rights sensitivity are the right to labor of migrant workers and happiness rights, and the episodes with the lowest human rights sensitivity are the right to freedom of detention and privacy rights. In addition, among the sub-factors of human rights sensitivity, perception of responsibility and perception of behavior are higher than perception of outcome. Second, there are differences in the human rights sensitivity of the university varsity team depending on the size and the level of performance of the university varsity team. Third, there are differences in the human rights sensibility of the university varsity team depending on the educational characteristics (volunteer activity and human rights education) of the university varsity team.
