  • This paper presents an optimum method for determining the parameters to athermalize a long-wavelength infrared (LWIR) zoom camera by introducing the defocus sensitivity analysis. To effectively find parameters that significantly affect thermal defocus, we simulated athermal analysis with temperature changes for all variables. Consequently, we found that the optimum parameter to correct thermal defocus is the compensation lens, and its movements with temperature at each zoom position are obtained from the simulated athermal analysis. To verify the efficiency of our athermal approach, we performed actual athermal tests in a broad temperature range at each zoom position. The simulated athermal analysis provides the initial position of the compensation lens at the corresponding temperature and zoom position. Then the compensation lens is elaboratively moved to serve the highest live contrast ratio (LCR) for the target. This experiment shows that the compensation lens locations in the actual test are closely matched to those in the simulated athermal analysis. In addition, two outdoor tests conducted in two different environments confirm that the autofocus system suggested in this study performs well at all zoom positions. Using the proposed athermal analysis approach in this paper, we efficiently realize an athermal system over the specified temperature and zoom ranges.

  • The high temperature tetragonal phase of zirconia containing $1.40{\~}1.60\;mol\%$ of yttria can be fully retained at room temperature by rapid cooling. The metastable tetragonal phase transforms into the monoclinic phase athermally upon subzero cooling. The transformation exhibited an athermal burst transformation. The effects of yttria content and grain size on the athermal martensitic transformation were studied in detail. The burst temperature linearly decreased with increasing yttria content or decreasing grain size. To consider the distribution of martensite nuclei, the Weibull modulus of the athermal martensitic transformation was evaluated from the distribution of the burst transformation temperature. From the Weibull analysis, the distribution of embryos appears to be more homogeneous than that of the defects responsible for the fracture of similar material.

  • We investigated the optimum adhesive thickness for athermalizing an elastomeric lens mount in our space optics application. Theoretical results were compared with finite element solutions using two different models; discrete circular pads and discrete circular pads with columns filling the insertion holes reflecting the reality. A noticeable difference between their optimal thicknesses was observed, and physical interpretation revealed the uncertainty of prevailing athermal equations. A pilot sample was made to check our results and thermo-optical stress was assessed using an interferometer after isothermal load. This study presented insight into preliminary design guidance in elastomeric lens mounting.

  • This paper presents a new graphical method for selecting a pair of optical glasses to simultaneously achromatize and athermalize an imaging lens made of materials in contact. An athermal glass map that plots thermal glass constant versus inverse Abbe number is derived through analysis of optical glasses and plastic materials in visible light. By introducing the equivalent Abbe number and equivalent thermal glass constant, although it is a multi-lens system, we have a simple way to visually identify possible optical materials. Applying this method to design a phone camera lens equipped with quarter inch image sensor having 8-mega pixels, the thermal defocuses over $-20^{\circ}C$ to $+60^{\circ}C$ are reduced to be much less than the depth of focus of the system.

  • Metastable phase characteristics of beta Ti alloys were investigated to consider the relationship of the microstructure and diffraction pattern in TEM. TEM analysis showed that the microstructure was mottled as a modulated structure, and the diffraction pattern was composed of spot streaks between the main spots of a stable beta phase with a specific lattice relationship. The modulated structure may be induced by short distance slip or atom movement during a very short interval of solution treated and quenched (STQ) materials. The athermal ${\omega}$ phase, which could be precipitated at low temperature aging, is also analysed by the metastable phase. The metastable phases including athermal ${\omega}$ phase had a common characteristic of hardened and brittle behavior because the dislocation slip was restricted by a super lattice effect due to short distance atom movement at the metastable state.

  • In oxide matrix-SiC(W) composites, instability and glassy phase formation due to oxidation at the high temperature and the diffusion of Si, respectively, cause brittle fracture and low reliability for ceramic materials. The mode of contribution in each mechanisms induced by matrix-whisker debonding, varies with the morphology of matrix-whisker interfaces. This work has described the dispersion behaviours and stabilization mechanisms in slip systems, and multiple toughening mechanisms by dint of two second phase different from each other when spherical ZrO2 and chemically stable Al2O3(W) is respectively added in Al2O3 matrix. To obtain complexshaped components, slip casted bodies were sintered at 1$600^{\circ}C$, 2hrs up to 98~99% R.D.. Multiple toughening mechanisms in comparison with theories reported until now will be discussed as a result of the phase analysis of ZrO2 by athermal behaviours and microstructural characterizations as well as measured mechanical properties.
