Woerner had suggested an asynchronous trellis-coded DS/CDMA system based on a multi-sequence signaling, biorthogonal sequence, which is superior to single sequence signaling, such as M-ary PSK, due to their better cross-correlation properties. This paper analyzes and compares system performance between OPSM, a recently-presented multi-sequence signaling scheme, and biorthogonal sequence signaling. Interuser interference moments of the two schemes are derived and compared which verifies that OPSM, having smaller signature sequences per symbol than biorthogonal signaling, reduces cross-correlation. Numerical results compare the power and spectral efficiency of asynchronous trellis-coded DS/CDMA systems based on multi-sequence signaling.

This paper investigates the effect a guard period (GP) in the form of a cyclic prefix for asynchronous multicarrier-code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) systems. At first, we analyze the performance of asynchronous MC-CDMA systems with a GP, which results in closed-form bit error rate (BER) performance. Furthermore, it confirms that the frequency diversity of MC-CDMA systems is identical to the path diversity. The analytical approach proposed here is extended to the case without a GP. The derived analytical results show that a GP is required for MC-CDMA systems in order to mitigate not only the effect of intersymbol interference (ISI) and intercarrier interference (ICI) but also the desired signal power degradation. In addition, the accuracy of the proposed analysis is verified by simulations.

In this paper, we evaluate the performance of reverse link synchronous CDMA with orthogonal spreading and Rake combining, and compare this to that of an asynchronous transmission under Rayleigh multipath fading environments. The link performance is evaluated in terms of average bit error rate (BER) and capacity, assuming ideal BPSK data modulation. The focus of this paper is on the impact that the multipath intensity profile (MIP) shape and number of taps in Rake receiver have on the performance of synchronous transmission. The results show the reverse link synchronous transmission can always achieve smaller BER than the asynchronous transmission even if inter-path interference exists.
The wideband DS-CDMA (W-CDMA) system is one of the candidates for the next generation mobile communication system known as IMT-2000. The important concept of W-CDMA is the introduction of intercell asynchronous operation. In this paper, we design and analyze the system level simulator for the International Mobile Tele communication - 2000 (IMT-2000) 3-rd generation partnership project (3GPP) system. We confirm how the simulator works by BER over different Eb/NO. This study will be expected to use as reference data in the development of asynchronous IMT-2000. In this paper, we analyze a physical layer of W-CDMA system and design a transmitter and receiver by using ADS (Advanced Design System). Also, we simulated a link level performance in Rayleigh fading channel environment. This study will be useful in the analysis and design of W-CDMA system.

Orthogonal codes like Walsh and Golay codes may have large correlation value when they are not synchronized, hence they are seldom used in asynchronous CDMA systems. Wysocki[1] showed that by multiplying the original Walsh-Hadamard matrix with an orthogonal transformation matrix the resultant matrix sustains orthogonality between row vectors and their cross-correlation can be reduced. Soberly and Wysocki[2] proposed similar scheme on Golay codes. This implies that using the proper orthogonal transformation cross-correlation of Walsh and Golay codes can be reduced, and the transformed codes can be used for user separation in the CDAM reverse link. In this paper we discuss cross-correlation related parameters which affect the performance of an asynchronous CDMA link, and we investigate the correlation properties of the transformed codes. When we designed orthogonal transformation matrices for Walsh and Golay codes, we minimized the maximum value of aperiodic cross-correlation of the codes ($ACC_{max}$) or the mean square value of the aperiodic cross-correlation($R_{cc}$) with preserving the orthogonality of the modified codes. We also evaluate the asynchronous CDMA system that uses the transformed Walsh and Golay codes.

This paper models a symbol timing offset (STO) with respect to the guard period and the maximum access delay time for asynchronous multicarrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) uplink systems over frequency-selective multipath fading channels. Analytical derivation shows that STO causes desired signal power degradation and generates self-interferences. This effect of the STO on the average bit error rate (BER) and the effective signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is evaluated. The approximated BER and the SNR loss caused by STO are then obtained as closed-form expressions. The tightness between the analytical result and the simulated one is verified for the different STOs and SNRs. Furthermore, the derived analytical results are verified via Monte Carlo simulations.

In this paper, the calibration problem of an asynchronous CDMA-based antenna array is studied. A new iterative calibration algorithm for antenna array in the presence of frequency offset error is presented. The algorithm is applicable to a non-linear array and does not require a prior knowledge of the (direction of arrivals) DOAs of the signals of any user, and it only requires the code sequence of a reference user. The algorithm is based on the two step procedures, one for estimating both channel and frequency offset and the other for estimating the unknown array gain and phase. Consequently, estimates of the DOAs, the multi-path impulse response of the reference signal sources, and the carrier frequency offset as well as the calibration of antenna array are provided. The performance of the proposed algorithm is investigated by means of computer simulations and is verified by using field data measured through a custom-built W-CDMA test-bed.

In this paper, we propose a new decorrelating detector called pseudo-inverse-filtering type decorrelating detector for asynchronous CDMA channels. We first show that the matched filtering and decorrelating operations of the existing decorrelating detectors can be replaced with the pseudo-inverse filtering operations in synchronous channels, and using this fact we show that the decorrelating detector has the largest SNR among the linear detectors that can eliminate MAI. Then we introduce asynchronous pseudo-inverse filtering type decorrelating detector by extending this result for asynchronous channels, and discuss implementation methods of the proposed decorrelating detectors. Since the proposed scheme employs a decentralized structure for updating coefficients, it has the flexibility to add/remove users. Finally we analyze the performance of the proposed decorrelating detector in terms of the bit error rate, and examine its performance improvements over the conventional detectors through computer simulations.

Blind Equalization Method without training sequences is proposed for channel efficiency in mobile communication system for asynchronous multi-user DS-CDMA. the risk of mis-convergence of weak-power users is increased because of small regions of convergence in case of near-far effect in CMA(Constant Modulus Algorithm) which is the simplest has high performance and widely implemented. In despite the problem a equalization using Newton method has higher performance than a conventional method in squared error and eye-pattern.

A new blind multi-user channel estimation algorithm for the mobile communication systems is proposed. The proposed algorithm exploits the second-order statistics of a received signal and the subspace concept, and requires much less computational complexity than the existing algorithms. The algorithm can reduce the comptational load by estimating the physical channels excluding the spreading codes. We formulate the algorithm using the multi-channel model for asynchronous DS-CDMA systems and perform numerical experiments to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm.
