  • We use ALLWISE data release W1- and W2-band epoch photometry collected by the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) to determine slopes of the period-luminosity relations for RR Lyrae stars in 15 globular clusters in the corresponding bands. We further combine these results with V- and K-band photometry of Galactic field RR Lyrae stars to determine the metallicity slopes of the log $P_F-[Fe/H]-M_K$, log $P_F-[Fe/H]-M_{W1}$, and log $P_F-[Fe/H]-M_{W2}$ period-metallicity-luminosity relations. We infer the zero points of these relations and determine the kinematical parameters of thick-disk and halo RR Lyraes via statistical parallax, and estimate the RR Lyrae-based distances to 18 Local-Group galaxies including the center of the Milky Way.

  • We present wide-field near-IR imaging polarimetry of 30 Doradus in the Large Magellanic Cloud, using the InfraRed Survey Facility (IRSF). We obtained polarimetry data in J, H, and Ks bands using the JHKs-simultaneous imaging polarimeter SIRPOL. Since many Galactic field stars along the line-of-sight to the Large Magellanic Cloud are contaminated in our data, we developed methods to identify the foreground sources using the proper motion data. We investigated polarimetric properties between the Galactic foreground stars and the stars in the LMC.

  • We first deduce a uniform formula forthe Fermi energy of degenerate and relativistic electrons in the weak-magnetic field approximation. Then we obtain an expression of the special solution for the electron Fermi energy through this formula, and express the electron Fermi energy as a function of electron fraction and matter density. Our method is universally suitable for relativistic electron- matter regions in neutron stars in the weak-magnetic field approximation.

  • We introduce Maemi Dual Field Telescope System (MDFTS) which is newly installed at Kyung Hee Astronomical Observatory (KHAO). MDFTS consists of two telescope tubes (40cm and 10cm), whose observing fields are aligned with different field of view, 15' x 11' and 83' x 63' respectively. We present the specification of instruments (telescope, mount, camera, and filter system) and the observation environment of KHAO. We expect that MDFTS can be used for transient survey e.g. Intensive Monitoring Survey of Nearby Galaxies (IMSNG). Based on observations conducted so far, the limiting magnitude of 40cm telescope in B-band is B_lim ~ 16 mag at 5-σ detection with 150 seconds total integration time under dark and clear observing condition. Also the integrated observing software for MDFTS, KAOS40 is now under developing.

  • We studied the controlling parameters of flux emergence with a focus on the relation between the configuration of coronal magnetic field and the pre-emeged state of subsurface magnetic field. We performed a series of magnetohydrodynamic simulations (dynamic model) and find an interesting result on the twist of coronal magnetic field, that is, the coronal magnetic field formed via flux emergence actually contains less amount of twist (relative magnetic helicity normalized by magnetic flux) than what is expected in kinematic models for global-scale solar eruptions. Based on this result, we propose another possible mechanism for producing these global-scale solar eruptions.

  • The imaging spectroscopic observations of the Magellanic irregular galaxy NGC 4449 were made to show the detailed kinematic structure of the galaxy. Many filamentary structures and Several bubble-like structures are recognized in a 3D data cube of H$\alpha$ emission line. Velocity field shows the kpc-scale mosaic structure and counter- rotation of ionized gas.
