  • The purpose of this research was to study the origins and the meanings of the Kokal (고깔). Comparative linguistic analytical approaches were employed to trace the development of the word, the Kokal(고깔). Results of this study revealed that the kotkal(곳갈, 곧갈) was a general term referring to a variety of head coverings in eh period of Choson Dynasty. This broad meanings of the Kotkal(곳갈,곧갈) of the Chosun Dynasty period has been changed to a narrow sense meanings a conical cap made of folds of the material, mainly used by some of the Buddhist monks in modern Korean. Also, the phonetic value of the Kotkal(곳갈,곧갈) of the Choson Dynasty period changed to the Kokal(고깔) in modern Korean. A variety of words for the Kokal(고깔) was found in the different languages such as Latin, English, French, Turkish, German, Mongolian, and Chinese. • The main purpose of this paper is to present data about schm constructions in English and to examine them within the framework of Optimality Theory. American people sometimes reduplicate a word in deprecation using a prefix schm- or shm-, as in fancy-shmancy, and old-shmold. In these data, reduplicants surface as a copy of the whole word except the onset of the first syllable, which is replaced with schm. My data include some examples where the onset of the second syllable, not the first syllable, within the word reduplication is deleted and replaced with fixed segmentism schm, which seems to be infix rather than prefix. Above all, this study presents concrete evidence for the existence and function of ‘syllable’ and ‘foot’ known as prosodic categories by examining schm reduplication. Such extensions of schm-reduplcation also make predictions about types of outputs corresponding to their inputs.

  • As the reuse of content becomes a strategy for the entertainment industry, managerial insight on customers is needed to be cultivated in order to run a successful business. This study analyzes the impact of previous satisfaction on consumption intention for content in another medium. To do this, two data sets are collected: cases of movie-to-TV series and TV series-to-movie and analyze them using a structural equation modeling approach. The results of our analysis show that satisfied viewers of a movie tend to communicate their positive feelings via word-of-mouth communication and demonstrate repurchase intention of another medium afterward. However, satisfaction does not automatically lead to repurchase intention in another medium. While satisfied viewers of a TV series show a statistically positive repurchase intention for a movie, satisfied viewers of a movie do not show a direct repurchase intention for a TV series. This result demonstrates an asymmetric relationship between satisfaction and repurchase intention across media, and its strategic implications are further discussed.

  • Purpose With the increasing number of foreign travelers visiting Korea, it is a heavy question to evaluate service quality of typical domestic hotel companies. Our research aims to evaluate service quality of domestic hotels in Korea from the perspective of foreign travelers in order to provide the quality improvements that call attention for the hotel management. Design/Methodology/Approach In this paper, topics of sentiment followed Lodging Quality Index(LQI) dimensions classifying lodging service quality appropriately. Also, we employed word2vec algorithm which calculates similarity and affinity among the vocabularies accurately. To calculate sentiment of each dimension, we adopted scores from SentiWordNet. Findings From the result, we found the number of foreign travelers particularly satisfied with cleanliness, politeness, and problem solving skills. In contrast, it has also been found out that both promptness of services and efficiency of communication do not fulfill the requirements of travelers.

  • This study compared the writing of Korean and Korean-Chinese adolescents using K-LIWC (Korean-Linguistic Inquiry Word Count Lee & Yoon, 2005). Three hundred ten (70 : Ulsan, Korea 90 : Yanji, and 150 : Shenyang, China) middle school students wrote a self introductory essay for unknown friends. K-LIWC yielded counts and percentages of word categories using the parts of speech of the Korean language and psychological (emotional, cognitive, sensory/perceptual, social, physical/functional and metaphysical processes) criteria. Results showed that use of pre-noun and present tense correlated with negative mood of the subjects. The writings of Korean-Chinese in Shenyang showed the most negative emotions among the three groups. This was interpreted to be a reflection of better protective factors for Korean-Chinese adolescents in Yanji compared with Shenyang.

  • This study investigates the effects of written vocabulary exercises on lexical knowledge. Korean university students learning English as a foreign language were randomly assigned to one of four conditions-Condition 1 (having students match word form with word meaning), Condition 2 (having students fill in the blank provided with a list of words), Condition 3 (having students write sentences with the target words), Condition 4 (having students do three practices with the same vocabulary exercise as the condition 1). Each type of exercises in Condition 1, 2, and 3 was designed to classify a different level of mental processing except Condition 4 with multiple encounters of the target words. Learners' vocabulary knowledge of this study was obtained using a format adopted from the Vocabulary Knowledge Scale (VKS) immediately and two weeks later. The findings indicated that: (1) Condition 4 having students do three matching vocabulary exercises was as effective as the condition 3 (one writing exercise) on the immediate learning of word; (2) although there was no significant difference of the effect of vocabulary exercises between Condition 3 and 4, Condition 4 asking students to do three matching vocabulary exercises was the most effective way of vocabulary retention after two weeks.

  • Within the framework of Generalized Sympathy (GS) (Jun 1999), this paper investigates the reasons why phonological rules such as Cluster Simplification, Closed Syllable ${\ae}$-Tensing, and Belfast Dentalization overapply or underapply in Class 2 affixed words in English. According to GS, a morphologically independent word can be treated as a derived word in that it is assumed to have any possible outputs as bases to resemble. As a result, a correspondence relation is triggered between a morphologically independent word being represented as Derived (D) and any possible outputs represented as Base (B), i.e., BD-Faith. In analyses of affixed words, BA-Faith is evoked, instead of BD-Faith. Furthermore, as Benua (1997) suggests, BA-Faith is classified into two correspondence relations; $BA_1$-Faith between Base and Class 1 affixed words, and $BA_2$-Faith between Base and Class 2 affixed words. When the $BA_1$-Faith takes precedence over phonological constraints three rules misapply in Class 2 affixed words. In other words, the misapplications are driven by base-identity effects.

  • This study examines the examples of wooden member terms of architecture terminology used in Yeonggeon-euigwe(營建儀軌) in the era of Joseon Dynasty. It is to trace the period of their appearances and changes and also to illuminate coinage characteristics and method of architectural terminology used in Yeonggeon-euigwe through graphonomy research and system and structure of wood member terms. By analyzing the meaning of a word, it was found that there was much Insineui, difference of word meaning by country was shown although it was the same shape of character. In particular, the specialty of double language system of Korean language is combined with that of wood terms. Operation of type unrelated to word meaning was found and Korean unique Gachaeui(假借義) like Bo(褓) was generated. This study draws separate systems: one is that can indicate coinage characters of architectural terminology in Yeonggeon-euigwe. The other is to obtain coinage method as a result of reclassifying terminology based on it.
