관측자료별 자료동화 성능이 한반도 동부 지역 기상 예보에 미치는 영향 분석 연구 (Study on the Impact of Various Observations Data Assimilation on the Meteorological Predictions over Eastern Part of the Korean Peninsula)

  • Numerical experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of data assimilation of observational data on weather and PM (particulate matter) prediction. Observational data applied to numerical experiment are aircraft observation, satellite observation, upper level observation, and AWS (automatic weather system) data. In the case of grid nudging, the prediction performance of the meteorological field is largely improved compared with the case without data assimilations because the overall pressure distribution can be changed. So grid nudging effect can be significant when synoptic weather pattern strongly affects Korean Peninsula. Predictability of meteorological factors can be expected to improve through a number of observational data assimilation, but data assimilation by single data often occurred to be less predictive than without data assimilation. Variation of air pressure due to observation nudging with high prediction efficiency can improve prediction accuracy of whole model domain. However, in areas with complex terrain such as the eastern part of the Korean peninsula, the improvement due to grid nudging were only limited. In such cases, it would be more effective to aggregate assimilated data.

  • The present study aims to evaluate the effects of satellite-based SST (OSTIA) assimilation on a regional ocean circulation model for the Yellow and East China Seas (YECS), using three different assimilation methods: the Ensemble Optimal Interpolation (EnOI), Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF), and 4-Dimensional Variational (4DVAR) techniques, which are widely used in the ocean modeling communities. The model experiments show that an improved initial condition by assimilating the SST affects the seasonal water temperature and water mass distributions of the YECS. In particular, the SST data assimilation influences the temperature structures horizontally and vertically in winter, thereby improving the behavior of the YS warm current water. This is due to the fact that during wintertime the water column is well mixed, which is directly updated by the SST assimilation. The model comparisons indicate that the SST assimilation can improve the model performance in resolving the subsurface structures in wintertime, but has a relatively small impact in summertime due to the strong stratification. The differences among the different assimilation experiments are obvious when the SST was sharply changed due to a typhoon passage. Overall, the EnKF and 4DVAR show better agreement with the observations than the EnOI. The relatively low performance of EnOI under storm conditions may be related with a limitation of EnOI method whereby an analysis is obtained from a number of climatological fields, and thus the typhoon-induced SST changes in short-time scales may not be adequately reflected in the data assimilation.

Fluctuation Rates of Phytoplankton Assemblages by Passage through Power Plant Cooling System

  • In order to investigate the fluctuation rates [FR] of phytoplankton after passage through a cooling system, the standing crops, chlorophyll a concentrations and carbon assimilation number of phytoplankton were surveyed at intake and outlet at Wolsong nuclear power plant [NPP] from July 2006 to June 2008. As a result, the total mean standing crops of phytoplankton were $1.0{\times}10^6\;cells\;L^{-1}$ and $7.3{\times}10^5\;cells\;L^{-1}$ at intake and outlet, respectively. The FR of phytoplankton by passage through the cooling system [PTCS] was 27.0%. Among them, the FR of microplankton and nanoplankton were 34.1% and 12.4%, respectively. In addition, the FR of diatoms and dinoflagellateswere 33.9% and 29.7%, respectively. These results showed the entrainment effects on microplankton and diatoms by PTCS were higher than those of nanoplankton and dinoflagellates. The FR of total chlorophyll a concentrations were 54.4%, and the FR of microplankton, nanoplankton and picoplankton were 58.9%, 38.5%, and 52.4%, respectively. So the entrainment effects on microplankton by PTCS were higher than those of nanoplankton and picoplankton. The mean FR of carbon assimilation number of phytoplankton was 57.6%, and the seasonal variations of FR of carbon assimilation number ranged from 47.5% to 76.8%. Our results indicated that the phytoplankton species responded differently to power plant operating conditions such as elevated temperature, chlorination, and mechanical impacts.

3차원 변분법의 제한조건 적용을 통한 기상청 전지구 모델의 성층권 바람장 개선 (Improvement of the Stratospheric Wind Analysis with the Climatological Constraint in the Global Three-Dimensional Variational Assimilation at Korea Meteorological Administration)

  • A constraint based on climatology is introduced to the cost function of the three-dimensional variational assimilation (3dVar) to correct the error of the zonal mean wind structure in the global data assimilation system at Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). The revised cost function compels the analysis fit to the chosen climatology while keeping the balance between the variables in the course of analysis. The constraint varies selectively with the vertical level and the horizontal scale of the motion. The zonally averaged wind field from European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Re-Analysis 40 (ERA-40) is used as a climatology field in the constraint. The constraint controls only the zonally averaged stratospheric long waves with total wave number less than 20 to fix the error of the large scale wind field in the stratosphere. The constrained 3dVar successfully suppresses the erroneous westerly in the stratospheric analysis promptly, and has been applied on the operational global 3dVar system at KMA.

  • 현대에 들어서면서 대기오염 물질이 심각하게 국민의 건강을 위협하는 단계에 이르렀기 때문에 이에 대한 예보의 중요성은 점점 높아지고 있다. 대기질을 예보하는데 있어서 예보 모델에 입력되는 초기장은 예보의 정확성에 영향을 미치는 요소이기 때문에 신뢰도 높은 초기장을 생성하는 것이 매우 중요하며, 이때 필요한 기법 중 하나가 자료동화이다. 자료동화는 대상 지역이 넓어지고, 관측소의 수가 증가될수록 더 많은 연산이 필요하기 때문에 그 수행시간이 길어진다. 때문에 예보 규모가 커질수록 기존의 순차처리 방식으로는 빠른 처리속도를 요구하는 현업에 적용하기 어렵다. 이에 본 논문에서는 자료동화 기법 중의 하나인 크레스만 방법을 CUDA를 이용하여 실시간으로 처리할 수 있는 방법을 제안하였다. 그 결과, 제안한 CUDA를 이용한 병렬처리 방법이 최소 35배 이상 속도가 향상되었다.

The Effects of Typhoon Initialization and Dropwindsonde Data Assimilation on Direct and Indirect Heavy Rainfall Simulation in WRF model

  • A number of heavy rainfall events on the Korean Peninsula are indirectly influenced by tropical cyclones (TCs) when they are located in southeastern China. In this study, a heavy rainfall case in the middle Korean region is selected to examine the influence of typhoon simulation performance on predictability of remote rainfall over Korea as well as direct rainfall over Taiwan. Four different numerical experiments are conducted using Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, toggling on and off two different improvements on typhoon in the model initial condition (IC), which are TC bogussing initialization and dropwindsonde observation data assimilation (DA). The Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory TC initialization algorithm is implemented to generate the bogused vortex instead of the initial typhoon, while the airborne observation obtained from dropwindsonde is applied by WRF Three-dimensional variational data assimilation. Results show that use of both TC initialization and DA improves predictability of TC track as well as rainfall over Korea and Taiwan. Without any of IC improvement usage, the intensity of TC is underestimated during the simulation. Using TC initialization alone improves simulation of direct rainfall but not of indirect rainfall, while using DA alone has a negative impact on the TC track forecast. This study confirms that the well-suited TC simulation over southeastern China improves remote rainfall predictability over Korea as well as TC direct rainfall over Taiwan.

관측시스템 실험을 통한 한반도 근해 Argo 플로트 관측자료의 자료동화 효과 평가 (Assessment of Assimilation Impact of Argo Float Observations in Marginal Seas around Korean Peninsula through Observing System Experiments)

  • An Observing System Experiment (OSE) using Global Ocean Data Assimilation and Prediction System (GODAPS) was conducted to evaluate the assimilation impact of Argo floats, deployed by National Institute of Meteorological Sciences/Korea Meteorological Administration (NIMS/KMA), in marginal seas around Korean peninsula. A data denial experiment was run by removing Argo floats in the Yellow Sea and the East Sea from an operational run. The assimilation results show that Argo floats bring the positive impact on the analysis of ocean internal structure in both Yellow Sea and East Sea. In the East Sea, overall positive impact in the water temperature and salinity context is found, especially outstanding improvement from 300 to 500 m depth. In the Yellow sea, the assimilation impact on water temperature and salinity is also large within 50 m depth, especially greater impact than the East Sea in salinity. However, in the Yellow Sea, the influence of Argo floats tends to be restricted to the vicinity of Argo floats, because there was only one Argo float in the middle of the Yellow Sea during the experiment period. Given that the only limited number of Argo floats generally contribute in a positive way to the improvement of the GODAPS, further progress could be expected with adding more observations from Argo floats to current observing systems.

부영양 하천(금강)에서 식물플랑크톤의 일차생산력 (Primary Productivity of Phytoplankton in a Eutrophic River (Kum River System))

  • The middle and lower reaches of the Kum River system become stagnant in dry seasons with florishing of phytoplankton. In this study primary productivity of phytoplankton were measured by the C-14 uptake method and the P-I model method at seven main stream sites of the Kum River from the Daechung Dam outet to the river mouth. Nutrients (TN, TP, DIP, TIN) concentrations were measured in the mainstream and tributaries and compared with the variation of assimilation number. The range of primary productivity was $40{\sim}4,558mgC{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}day^{-1}$ and it was higher than those of lentic ecosystems in Korea. Average TN and TP were $4.1mgN{\cdot}L^{-1}$, $70.6mgP{\cdot}m^{-3}$, respectively. Tributaries showed higher nutrient concentrations than the main stream. After two major tributaries merged with the discharging water of the Daechung Dam phyotplankton biomass and productivity increased drastically and remained at the similar eutrophic level through the downstream reach to the river mouth. Both dissolved phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations showed positive correlation with assimilation number of phytoplankton. In conclusion phytoplankton productivity is at the level of eutrophic water and it was higher than usual lentic habitats. Nutrient concentrations are critical factors in controlling productivity in the lower reach of the Kum River.

기상청 고해상도 지역예보모델을 이용한 한반도 영역 한국형 항공난류 예측시스템(한반도-KTG) 개발 (Development of the Korean Peninsula-Korean Aviation Turbulence Guidance (KP-KTG) System Using the Local Data Assimilation and Prediction System (LDAPS) of the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA))

  • Korean Peninsula has high potential for occurrence of aviation turbulence. A Korean aviation Turbulence Guidance (KTG) system focused on the Korean Peninsula, named Korean-Peninsula KTG (KP-KTG) system, is developed using the high resolution (horizontal grid spacing of 1.5 km) Local Data Assimilation and Prediction System (LDAPS) of the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). The KP-KTG system is constructed first by selection of 15 best diagnostics of aviation turbulence using the method of probability of detection (POD) with pilot reports (PIREPs) and the LDAPS analysis data. The 15 best diagnostics are combined into an ensemble KTG predictor, named KP-KTG, with their weighting scores computed by the values of area under curve (AUC) of each diagnostics. The performance of the KP-KTG, represented by AUC, is larger than 0.84 in the recent two years (June 2012~May 2014), which is very good considering relatively small number of PIREPs. The KP-KTG can provide localized turbulence forecasting in Korean Peninsula, and its skill score is as good as that of the operational-KTG conducting in East Asia.

Discussion on Integrated Policies of Korean Multicultural Society: According to the Cases of Managerial Policies among Several Countries

  • Purpose - The multicultural society is a society where a variety of ethnic groups and cultures co-exist. Regarding Korean multicultural society, the public interest in the multicultural society and its problems are on a growing trend due to the increasing number of the multicultural families by international marriage and the foreign immigrant workers. Research design, data, and methodology - Models of the multicultural society policies have been divided into those of assimilation and multiculturalism, while they have been materialized into the models of discriminative exclusivism, assimilation and multiculturalism. Most countries are aiming at the model of either the multiculturalism or the assimilation focused on national managerial situations. Results - In the case of Europe where the multicultural society had been formed earlier than Korea, Islamic immigrants have been politically accepted in order for Europe to overcome the problem of population decrease caused by its low birth-rate. Also, in the case of the United States. Conclusions - Korean multicultural society policies are characterized mostly by supporting the multicultural families of international marriage. In this study, it is intended to present the characteristics of diversified immigrants and the possible directions of the polices on immigrant youth in accordance with each country's managerial policy.
