Kalman Filter Estimation of a Company's Intangible Assets

  • A company's market value-added, which equals the excess of a company's market capitalization over it s book value, is used as one of the measures for intangible assets valuation in accounting literature. One problem with the approach is that the valuation results are affected by severe fluctuations in capital markets. In this paper, we propose an approach using the Kalman filter for intangible assets valuation. We apply this method to data of Korean electronic companies.

  • In the future knowledge society, the importance of business data is expected to increase, and it is recognized as a raw material for companies to manufacture product or develop service. As the importance of data increases, methods to calculate the economic value of database assets is being studied. There are many studies to evaluate the value of database assets, but the characteristics of database assets are not fully reflected. In this study, we classified database assets into revenue-type, non-revenue-type, and public-type database assets by considering the characteristics of database assets. In addition, focusing on the fact that revenue-type database assets can be valued similarly to existing technology valuation, we developed a method for calculating the life of database assets that includes risk-adjusted discount rate.

  • This paper maps the overall features of technology valuation through a conceptional framework. The framework is composed of 4 dimensions such as basic, compositional, technical and behavioral dimension. At basic dimension, what is value and what is technology are discussed. The valuation of technology or the valuation of other assets are compared at the compositional dimension. The techniques of the valuation of technology and its difference with the valuation methods of other assets are examined at the technical dimension. The effectiveness, possibility and error of valuation are discussed at the behavioral dimension.

  • This paper is based on a belief that, it is the simplest and best way measuring intangibles and knowledge assets on a monetary base, although there are many efforts to measure it. We analysis and compare with accounting, appraisal and valuation standards on Korean, USA and global level each. We conclude that valuation is appropriate for intangibles and knowledge assets, but we should check the standards of valuation on a social base in Korea.

  • This paper suggests a valuation framework of investment project using the concept of real options. We show the valuation process of real assets using the risk-neutral pricing. Especially, we focus on the investment lag. Real assets have investment lag in general. The decision time and the payment time are not identical. So the investment lag should be considered when valuing real assets for reality. We provide the valuation process for real assets, including R&D project. The results of this paper can be used for the real assets valuation and strategic decision analysis.

  • Intangible assets for construction engineering consulting firms are very important for their valuation, because engineering consulting is typical knowledge-based business which creates value based on technical expertise and human resources. This paper presents the intangible asset classification model based on the concept of value creation in construction engineering consulting firm and proposes intangible asset valuation methodology using System Dynamics and survey data. Utilization of the valuation methodology presented in this paper would increase the public awareness of intangible assets in construction engineering consulting firm and, thus, contribute to the growth of the engineering consulting industry by realistic and accurate valuation of intangible assets.

  • It is well known that in the knowledge-based economy a firm's intellectual property including patent is crucial for its competitive advantage. In industrial economy, tangible assets such as land and equipment have been of critical importance for a firm's competitiveness. However, as the paradigm shift to the knowledge-base economy is being accelerated, intangible assets such as intellectual property are considered to be more influential for a firm to be competitive. The valuation of intangible asset is as necessary as that of tangible asset. In particular, reasonably accurate valuation of patent which represents a firm's technological competitiveness seems to be of great importance since (1) it is essential for a firm's patent strategy development, (2) it can activate the technology market, and (3) it is necessary to evaluate a patent's technological contribution when multiple patents are used to develop and commercialize an innovative product. Unlike that of tangible asset, the valuation of intangible asset is very difficult. In order to figure out a value of patent it is necessary to use a number of appropriate valuation factors. In this paper, we surveyed various valuation factors presented by previous researches and several technology valuation organizations to find a set of common valuation factors considered to be of more importance.

  • Valuation of intangible assets has been discussed for the purpose of transaction of a technology and investment based on intangible assets as well. Practical techniques, however, have rut been developed for valuation of automated, electronic data bases as specialized knowledge information contents. This study will summarize general intangible valuation approaches and special considerations in contents valuation, and present examples of the application of approaches to illustrative contents valuation analysis.

  • Although the methodology and models to assess the economic value of technology assets such as patents are being presented in various ways, there does not exist a structured assessment model which enables to objectively assess a database property's value, and thus there is a need to enhance the application feasibility of practical purposes such as licensing of DB assets, commercialization transfer, security, etc., through the establishment of the valuation model and the life-cycle decision logic. In this study, during the valuation process of DB assets, the size of customer demand group expected and the amount of demand, the size and importance of data sets, the approximate degree of database' contribution to the sales performance of a company, the life-cycle of database assets, etc. will be analyzed whether they are appropriate as input variables or not. As for most of DB assets, due to irregular updates there are hardly cases their life-cycle expires, and thus software package's persisting period, ie. 5 years, is often considered the standard. We herein propose the life-cycle estimation logic and valuation models of DB assets based on the concept of half life for DB usage frequency under the condition that DB assets' value decays and there occurs no data update over time.

  • Intangible assets are the important tool which decides upon economic wealth and development of knowledge-information economy. We have to make effective use of intangible assets in order to assure surplus earnings, competitive superiority. The importance of intangible assets, especially patent right, may be properly understood only when their values are assessed adequately. It is very significant to appraise rationally patent right value from finance support, technology transaction, investment decision, M&A, legal proceedings, strategy and etc. Thus the purpose of this study is to evaluate the economic value of a patent right using DCF(Discounted-Cash Flow Method). This paper presents the basic model, related principles and standards of valuation, and then, case analysis of patent right valuation using DCF.
