  • This paper examines the relationship between diversification and financial performance of community credit unions in Korea from 2011 to 2017. To do so, I employ fixed-effects panel analyses using credit union level panel data collected from the National Credit Union Federation of Korea. This study finds evidence that business diversification is likely to lower the ratio of troubled loans, which means improving asset quality of credit unions. However, the relationship between diversification and asset quality is not linear but nonlinear, which means over-diversification would have negative effects on asset quality. Next, diversification tends to increase profitability. Specifically, although diversification results in a rise in expenditures, an increase in profits made by diversification outweighs the rise in expenditures, which contributes to profitability. Put together, diversification would be a good business strategy to improve both profitability and asset quality. Given a result that fast loan growth deteriorates asset quality, credit unions' managers might adopt the diversification strategy to enhance asset quality, and not to pursue their own objectives motivated by moral hazards.

  • We analyzed the structures and properties of the global financial market networks using social network analysis approach. The Minimum Spanning Tree (MST) lengths and networks of the global financial markets based on the correlation coefficients have been analyzed. Firstly, similar to the previous studies on the global stock indices using MST length, the diversification effects in the global multi-asset portfolio can disappear during the crisis as the correlations among the asset class and within the asset class increase due to the system risks. Second, through the network visualization, we found the clustering of the asset class in the global financial markets network, which confirms the possible diversification effect in the global multi-asset portfolio. Meanwhile, we found the changes in the structure of the network during the crisis. For the last one, in terms of the degree centrality, the stock indices were the most influential to other assets in the global financial markets network, while in terms of the betweenness centrality, Gold, Silver and AUD. In the practical perspective, we propose the methods such as MST length and network visualization to monitor the change of the correlation risk for the risk management of the multi-asset portfolio.

  • This study seeks to determine if the efficiency of bank human resources, as played by human capital, impacts the performance and diversification of banks. This study uses secondary data from data obtained from 385 commercial banks in 33 countries in Asia during the 2010-2020 period with the diversification analysis method. We use the Z-score to measure the amount of standard deviation that must be from earnings (ROAA). We examined it using the Tobit regression technique. According to the regression estimation results, human capital has a significant role in the performance and effective diversification of Asian banks. The human capital efficiency coefficient (HCE) is significantly negative with the cost-to-income ratio (CTIR) and significantly positive with Profitability, Financial Stability, and cost efficiency score. The level of efficiency of human resources has an effective role in increasing human capital which has an impact on bank diversification and performance. The development of human resources in a human capital framework plays an important role in the diversification and improvement of bank performance. Human capital has a significant role in the performance and effective diversification of Asian banks. To eliminate the enhancement effect from portfolio strategy itself rather than including non-financial asset, used the four basic portfolio strategy such as buy & hold, constant rebalanced, mean variance, risk parity. As a result, all the portfolios included with music royalties shows less risk with higher returns. This means the sharpe ratio has enhanced and that results the portfolio diversification effect is placed. The empirical analysis of the study found academic significance in that the portfolio included with music royalties investment has diversification effect, and show the possibilities the not only on the music royalties, other non-financial asset can be shown the portfolio diversification effect.

  • This study is to identify factors influencing therapeutic diversification strategy for Korean pharmaceutical companies. So, it purposes to find deciding factors for companies to adopt strategy for diversification or specialization. In this paper, we set six factors that are expected to influence diversification. The factors are asset scale, sales, profitability, and growth potential. Also, we included number of employees and SG&A cost ratio as factors that reflect business characteristics. We analyzed the impacts of each factor on diversification and found a relationship amongst each other. In this paper, regression analysis is applied with forward selection method, considering that it takes 5 years for companies to decide on diversification strategy. As a result, asset scale, the number of employees and profitability have significantly influenced decisions of diversification at t-1 time, and growth potential was significantly influenced at t-2 time. Korean pharmaceutical companies generally tend to go with specialization model if they have larger asset scale, higher profitability and growth potential. However, they have tendency to decide on diversification strategy, if they have large number of employees. Overall, the result of this study is expected to provide useful information for Korean pharmaceutical companies to set the suitable strategy for their situation to become a competitive company in global pharmaceutical market.

However, in spite of diverse and dynamically changing recent brand portfolio strategies of restaurants, a study on the effect of brand diversification on financial performance has been rarely conducted in the restaurant industry context. Considering competing viewpoints regarding diversification's influence on financial performance, the purpose of this study is, therefore, to examine the effect of brand diversification on firm performance of restaurants. • In Schumpeterian competition, superior profit arises from successful innovation created by firm's R&D strategy. Such R&D strategy diverges as time passes. This study examines empirically the effects of diverged forms of R&D strategy such as technological assets, technological diversity, and technological similarity on firm performance in Korean pharmaceutical industry. With the financial and patent data of 96 firms for 14 years from 1994 to 2007, we measured variables. And then we performed panel analysis with 3 years lag between dependent variable and other variables. The result shows that firm performance increases as technological asset and technological diversification increase. But technological similarity positively affects on firm performance in opposition to our hypothesis. We interpret and discuss these results and highlight the theoretical and practical implications of our findings.

  • Purpose - This study investigates the effect of MNEs' characteristics on the use of foreign currency denominated debt in the context of Korean firms. This study examines the relationship between MNEs and the use of foreign debt focusing on the accessibility to the capital market in addition to the motive of hedging against foreign exchange exposure. Research design and methodology - Probit estimation is employed for estimating significant factors in determination of the use of foreign debt by firms. The dependent variable is a dummy variable to indicate whether a firm uses foreign debt or not at the end of 2004. Independent variables include foreign subsidiaries ratio, export to sale, R&D expenditure to sale, and credit rating. Results - The results show that the interaction between the level of internationalization represented by intra-regional diversification and the strategic characteristics embedded in the region of entry affects the use of foreign debt. In case of a high level of diversification within the developing region with a strong pursuit of asset exploitation, MNEs are more likely to use foreign debt, whereas a high level of diversification within the developed region with a strong pursuit of asset seeking, MNEs are less likely to use foreign debt. Conclusions - The differences between MNEs in terms of intra-regional diversification, strategic orientation, and the accessibility to capital markets as well as the hedging motive affect the use of foreign debt.
