  • Automatic FPC punching instrument for the improvement of working condition and cost saving is introduced in this paper. FPC(flexible printed circuit) is used to detect the contact position of K/B and button like a cellular phone. Depending on the quality of the printed ink and position of reference punching point to the FPC, the resistance and current are varied to the malfunctioning values. The size of reference punching point is 2mm and the above. Because the punching operation is done manually, the accuracy of the punching degree is varied with operator's condition. Recently, The punching accuracy has deteriorated severely to the 2mm punching reference hall so that assembly of the K/B has hardly done. To improve this manual punching operation to the FPC, automatic FPC punching system is introduced. Precise mechanical parts like a 5-step stepping motor and ball screw mechanism are designed and tested and low cost PC camera is used for the sake of cost down instead of using high quality vision systems for the FA. 3D Mechanical design tool(Pro/E) is used to manage the exact tolerance circumstances and avoid design failures. Simulation is performed to make the complete vision based punching machine before assembly, and this procedure led to the manufacturing cost saving. As the image processing algorithms, dilation, erosion, and threshold calculation is applied to obtain an exact center position from the FPC print marks. These image processing algorithms made the original images having various noises have clean binary pixels which is easy to calculate the center position of print marks. Moment and Least square method are used to calculate the center position of objects. In this development circumstance, Moment method was superior to the Least square one at the calculation of speed and against noise. Main control panel is programmed by Visual C++ and graphical Active X for the whole management of vision based automatic punching machine. Operating modes like manual, calibration, and automatic mode are added to the main control panel for the compensation of bad FPC print conditions and mechanical tolerance occurring in the case of punch and die reassembly. Test algorithms and programs showed good results to the designed automatic punching system and led to the increase of productivity and huge cost down to law material like FPC by avoiding bad quality.

  • As the end of photolithographic integration era is approaching fast, numerous nanoscale devices and systems based on novel nanoscale materials and assembly techniques are recently emerging. Notably, various reconfigurable architectures with considerable promise have been proposed based on nanowire crossbar structure as the primitive building block. Unfortunately, high-density sys-tems consisting of nanometer-scale elements are likely to have numerous physical imperfections and variations. Therefore, defect-tolerance is considered as one of the most exigent challenges in nanowire crossbar systems. In this work, three different defect-avoidant logic mapping algorithms to circumvent defective crosspoints in nanowire reconfigurable crossbar systems are evaluated in terms of various performance metrics. Then, a novel method to find the most cost-effective repair solution is demonstrated by considering all major repair parameters and quantitatively estimating the performance and cost-effectiveness of each algorithm. Extensive parametric simulation results are reported to compare overall repair costs of the repair algorithms under consideration and to validate the cost-driven repair optimization technique.

  • The CQUEAN (Camera for QUasars in EArly uNiverse) is an optical CCD camera optimized for observation of high redshift objects. It is going to be attached to the cassegrain focus of 2.1m telescope at McDonald Observatory, USA. We are making a focal reducer for CQUEAN to secure a larger field of view. The focal reducer is composed of four spherical lens, and it reduces the focal length of telescope by one third. We designed the lens configuration, performed tolerance analysis, and estimated the optical performance with ZEMAX. The differences in optical performace with/without filters were also investigated. The result from ZEMAX shows that the system has ample margin of errors for median seeing of 1.2" at McDonald observatory. Even with aberration and alignment tolerance, the performance is better than the original requirement. The lenses are now being made, and the lens barrel and an adapter for assembly of the Andor CCD camera and the filter wheel is now under designing process. We expect that the manufacturing of the focal reducer system as well as its optical test will be finished by April 2010.

  • A study aimed at identifying putative drought responsive genes that confer tolerance to water stress deficit in tea plants was conducted in a 'rain-out shelter' using potted plants. Eighteen months old drought tolerant and susceptible tea cultivars were each separately exposed to water stress or control conditions of 18 or 34% soil moisture content, respectively, for three months. After the treatment period, leaves were harvested from each treatment for isolation of RNA and cDNA synthesis. The cDNA libraries were sequenced on Roche 454 high-throughput pyrosequencing platform to produce 232,853 reads. After quality control, the reads were assembled into 460 long transcripts (contigs). The annotated contigs showed similarity with proteins in the Arabidopsis thaliana proteome. Heat shock proteins (HSP70), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (cat), peroxidase (PoX), calmodulinelike protein (Cam7) and galactinol synthase (Gols4) droughtrelated genes were shown to be regulated differently in tea plants exposed to water stress. HSP70 and SOD were highly expressed in the drought tolerant cultivar relative to the susceptible cultivar under drought conditions. The genes and pathways identified suggest efficient regulation leading to active adaptation as a basal defense response against water stress deficit by tea. The knowledge generated can be further utilized to better understand molecular mechanisms underlying stress tolerance in tea.

  • Study on the Ti-6Al-4V have been carried out using cutting simulation, and researches for cutting force and chip shape prediction have been actively conducted under various conditions. However, a 3D printer application method using Ti-6Al-4V metal powder material as a high-power method has been studied for the purpose of prototyping, mold modification and product modification while lowering material removal rate. However, in the case of products / parts made of 3D printers using powder materials, problems may occur in the contact surface during tolerance management and assembly due to the degradation of the surface quality. As a result, even if a 3D printer is applied, post-processing through cutting is essential for surface quality improvement and tolerance management. In the cutting simulation, the cutting force and the chip shape were predicted based on the Johnson-Cook composition equation, but the shape of the shear type chip was not predictable. To solve this problem, we added a damaging term or strain softening term to the Johnson-Cook constitutive equation to predict chip shape. In this thesis, we applied the constant value of the S-K equations to the cutting simulation to predict the cutting force and compare with the experimental data to verify the validity of the cutting simulation and analyzed the machining characterization by considering conditions.

  • Rapeseed is a crop that is waterlogging sensitive, and it is necessary to breed waterlogging tolerance varieties. Our study presents the comparative transcriptome changes in two rapeseed lines, i.e., waterlogging-tolerant (tJ8634-B-30,) and - sensitive ('EMS26') lines under control and waterlogging stress treatments at the flowering stage. RNA-sequencing analysis revealed 13,279 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) for 'J8634-B-30' and 8,682 DEGs for 'EMS26' under waterlogging stress condition compared to control. Among DEGs of 'J8634-B-30', 6,818 were up-regulated and 6,461 were down-regulated. On the other hand, among the DEGs of 'EMS26', the number of down-regulated genes (5,240) were higher than that of up-regulated genes (3,442). Gene ontology enrichment analysis showed that DEGs related to glucan metabolic, cell wall, and oxidoreductase activity were significantly changed in 'J8634-B-30'. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG)-based analysis in 'J8634-B-30' identified up-regulated DEGs being involved in MAPK signaling pathways. In addition, the DEGs belonging to mechanisms responding to waterlogging stress, i.e., plant hormones, carbon metabolism, Reactive oxygen species (ROS), Nitric oxide (NO) etc. were compared in rapeseed lines. Several DEGs including ethylene-responsive transcription factor (ERF), constitutive triple response (CTR) (in ethylene signaling pathway), monodehydroascorbate Reductase (MDAR), NADPH oxidase (in ROS pathway), cytochrome c oxidase assembly protein (COX) (in NO pathway) up-regulated in 'J8634-B-30'. These outcomes provided the valuable information for further exploring the genetic mechanism of waterlogging tolerance in rapeseed.

  • The collimator is necessary for the assembly and evaluation of high resolution satellite telescope. Traditionally, the off-axis paraboloid has been used as a collimator. However, it has some disadvantages in that it can suffer from air turbulence when the focal length of a collimator is long, which may result in some error in the measurement. In contrast, since the Cassegrain type collimator folds the beam, it occupies smaller space compared to the off-axis paraboloid for the same focal length. This can reduce the air turbulence, which can improve the measurement accuracy. In this paper, we explain the process of design and manufacturing of a diameter 450 mm Cassegrain type collimator, to evaluate the diameter 300 mm satellite telescope. After assembly of primary and secondary mirrors, the final wavefront error of the collimator was 0.07λ(λ=633 nm), which is the diffraction limit.

  • In this paper, a study is conducted on the design of an optical system of a time-of-flight (TOF) laser distance sensor that can measure long distances by minimizing beam divergence. When measuring a long distance, the amount of light on the object's surface decreases as the distance increases, due to the diffusion angle of the laser beam, and thus the beam at the sensor also decreases, causing measurement errors. In general, a cylindrical lens is used to reduce the divergence beam angle. However, an optical system using a cylindrical lens has the problem of degraded performance due to the difficulty with assembly tolerance, as well as the problem of the increased size of the optical system, and thus the use of aspherical lenses has been increasing recently. Therefore, in this study, the optical efficiencies and assembly tolerances of optical systems using respectively a cylindrical lens and an aspherical lens are compared and analyzed.

  • Recently, lens manufacturing and assembly technology has greatly improved. However, tight requirements of manufacturing and assembly lead to an increase in cost and manufacturing time, and in some cases the performance of an optical system may deteriorate depending on the operating environment's conditions, such as temperature or vibration. In addition, the use of a compensator is an effective method to reduce sensitivity in an ultra-precision optical system, but in the case of a small lens, such as that in an endoscope, it is difficult to use a compensator due to the size limitation of the lens barrel. Therefore, minimizing lens sensitivity is the most important technology in lens design. For this reason, there have been various attempts to reduce the lens sensitivity, and there is a trend to add functions to reduce the sensitivity in the lens design S/W. In this paper, we introduce a design technology that minimizes lens sensitivity. We first design a lens with quite good performance, then analyze the sensitivity of this lens, make a multi-configuration with high-sensitivity element error, and then reoptimize it. We prove with an example that this design technique is very effective.

  • Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is the third most important food crop, and breeding drought-tolerant varieties is vital research goal. However, detailed molecular mechanisms in response to drought stress in potatoes are not well known. In this study, we developed EMS-mutagenized potatoes that showed significant tolerance to drought stress compared to the wild-type (WT) 'Desiree' cultivar. In addition, changes to transcripts as a result of drought stress in WT and drought-tolerant (DR) plants were investigated by de novo assembly using the Illumina platform. One-week-old WT and DR plants were treated with -1.8 Mpa polyethylene glycol-8000, and total RNA was prepared from plants harvested at 0, 6, 12, 24, and 48 h for subsequent RNA sequencing. In total, 61,100 transcripts and 5,118 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) displaying up- or down-regulation were identified in pairwise comparisons of WT and DR plants following drought conditions. Transcriptome profiling showed the number of DEGs with up-regulation and down-regulation at 909, 977, 1181, 1225 and 826 between WT and DR plants at 0, 6, 12, 24, and 48 h, respectively. Results of KEGG enrichment showed that the drought tolerance mechanism of the DR plant can mainly be explained by two aspects, the 'photosynthetic-antenna protein' and 'protein processing of the endoplasmic reticulum'. We also divided eight expression patterns in four pairwise comparisons of DR plants (DR0 vs DR6, DR12, DR24, DR48) under PEG treatment. Our comprehensive transcriptome data will further enhance our understanding of the mechanisms regulating drought tolerance in tetraploid potato cultivars.
