Domestic reinforced concrete (RC) apartments have a unique structural system that consists of shear walls and rink members of slabs and lintels. In this study, the nonlinear static analysis of two RC shear wall sub-assemblages, with and without lintels, was conducted using the uniaxial spring model to develop a method for accurately predicting the seismic behavior of domestic RC apartments. In the case of the specimen without lintels, the analytical result successfully represented a simulation of the nonlinear behavior of the specimen in accordance with the test result. On the other hand, in the case of the specimen with lintels, the analysis resulted in underestimating the nonlinear behavior of the specimen compared to the test result, because the coupling effect could not be predicted from the earlier loading cycle.
In order to identify the post-fire changes of ant assemblages after a forest fire, ants were surveyed at three survey sites (artificial reforestation site, natural reforestation site, and unburned forest site) in a burned forest area for eight years from 2005 using pitfall traps. 24 species were collected, and Nylanderia flavipes was the most abundant. Ant species preferring forest habitats (e.g. Aphaenogaster japonica. Lasius spathepus, and Plagiolepis flavescens) more occurred at the unburned forest site and the natural reforestation site, whereas ant species preferring open habitat (e.g., Formica japonica, Camponotus japonicus, and Tetramorium caespitum) more occurred at the artificial reforestation site. Ordination analysis indicated that ant communities of the artificial reforestation site were more changed compared with those of the natural reforestation site after the fire. The communities of the natural reforestation site were restored to the pre-fire state in five to six years after fire, whereas those of the artificial forest site seemed to take about 25 years to restore.
Mineralogical characterization was performed for the mineral assemblages precipitated at the boundary between limestone bedrock and bat guano deposits in the Gossi Cave, Korea. Francoanellite, taranakite, ardealite, brushite and monetite are observed as phosphate minerals and gypsum and a small amount of barite as sulfate minerals in the guano deposits. With the increase of depth, phosphates are changed as following sequence: taranakite ${\rightarrow}$ francoanellite ${\rightarrow}$ ardealite ${\rightarrow}$ brushite ${\rightarrow}$ monetite. This sequence indicates that the major parameters controlling the physico-chemical conditions under which these mineral assemblages were deposited are pH and relative humidity.
BACKGROUND: In recent year, there has been great concern regarding agricultural land uses and their importance for the conservation of biodiversity. Rice fields are managed unique wetland for wildlife, especially waterbirds. A comprehensive monitoring of the waterbird assemblage to understand patterning changes was attempted for rice ecosystem in South Korea. This rice ecosystem has been recognized as one of the most important for waterbirds conservation. METHODS AND RESULTS: Biweekly monitoring was implemented for the 4 years from April 2009 to March 2010, from April 2011 to March 2014. 32 species of waterbirds were observed. Self-organizing map (SOM) and random forest were applied to the waterbirds dataset to identify the characteristics in waterbirds distribution. SOM and random forest analysis clearly classified into four clusters and extract ecological information from waterbird dataset. Waterbird assemblages represented strong seasonality and habitat use according to waterbird group such as shorebirds, herons and waterfowl. CONCLUSION: Our results showed that the combination of SOM and random forest analysis could be useful for ecosystem assessment and management. Furthermore, we strongly suggested that a strict management strategy for the rice fields to conserve the waterbirds. The strategy could be seasonally and species specific.
Surface sediments for sedimentary analyses were sampled at 199 stations in the study area in August 2003. The surface sediments consisted of six sedimentary facies. Generally, sandy mud sediments dominated in the southern tidal flat of Ganghwa Island and sand sediments dominated in channel and subtidal zones of the western part of Ganghwa Island. The area of sandy mud sediment extended to eastward tidal flat compared to sedimentary facies in August 1997. In 30 surface sediment samples from the Ganghwa tidal flat and subtidal zone, 61 species were recorded in total assemblages, including 34 species of living population. Ammonia beccarii and Elphidium etigoense in living population and Ammonia beccarii, Elphidium etigoense, Jadammina sp. and Textularia earlandi in total assemblage were widely distributed. Generally, relatively large numbers of species and high values of species diversity occurred in the area of western part of tidal flat. Cluster analysis of total assemblages discriminates four biofacies. Biofacies 1 indicated eastern part of the tidal flat and biofacies 4 indicated western part of the tidal flat. Biofacies 3 were transitional zone between biofacies 1 and 4.
The pigment composition and concentration of phytoplankton assemblages using HPLC in the adjacent waters of four nuclear power plants (Yonggwang, Kori, Wolsong and Ulchin) were investigated during the spring blooming in 2004. The mean concentration of chlorophyll a ranged from 563.8 to 2,949.0ng $l^{-1}$, with the lowest concentration at Kori and the highest concentration at Wolsong. Among the carotenoids, the amounts of fucoxanthin and chlorophyll $C_2$ were relatively higher than those of other pigments in the study site. As minor pigments, zeaxanthin, chlorophyll b, 19'-butanoyloxyfucoxanthin, diadinoxanthin, 19'-hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin, chlorophyll $C_3$ and peridinin were detected. The results of pigment composition and concentration showed that diatoms had an important proportion of phytoplankton community when a spring bloom occurred. Cyanobacteria was present relatively low density at the Wolsong and the green alga such as chlorophytes and prasinophytes were abundant at the Yonggwang and Kori, while dinoflagellates characterized by peridinin were common at Ulchin and Kori. The pigment composition and concentration of phytoplankton after passing through the cooling-water system of nuclear power plant were highly variable. No distinct trend of the change of each pigment composition and amount was detected but the variation of fucoxanthin and chlorophyll $C_2$ highly coupled with that of chlorophyll a. We pointed out that the diatom controlled the overall variation of phytoplankton biomass during the spring season.
Skarn at the Dielette formed largely in calc-silicate hornfels at the contact with the Flamanville granite. The skarn consists mainly of garnet and pyroxene, and less frequently vesuvianite. Traversing toward calc-silicate hornfels wall rock from a central zone of the skarn, the general sequence of formation of mineral assemblages is: (1) dark brown garnet (2) pale brown garnet-vesuvianite-pyroxene, and (3) pyroxene-prehnite-scapolite-wollastonite envelopes (designated as transition zone) developed between skarn and calc-silicate hornfels. The central zone of the skarn consists mainly of dark brown garnets (garnet I) that contain little or no pyroxene. The pale brown garnet (garnet II) is associated with pyroxene and vesuvianite. The sequence of these garnets results from the zonal growth outward. There is an abrupt discontinuity in composition between garnet I formed in early stage and garnet II in late stage, while each garnet shows relatively uniform composition. At the zone in contact with the granite, the iron contents of garnets decrease toward the marginal zone of the skarn, from an average value of 36 mole % andradite in garnet I to 18 mole % andradite in garnet II. At the zone distant from the granite, the andradite component decreases from 28 mole % in garnet 1 to 19 mole % in garnet II. The variation of the iron contents of pyroxenes is also similar to that of garnets. The sharp discontinuity in composition of garnets and pyroxenes suggests that the skarn of study area was formed by infiltration metasomatic process. The results of the analyses of mineral assemblages of the transition zone by chemical potential diagrams suggest that the transition zone was made by the diffusion of the elements Ca, K and Fe from the skarn to the calc-silicate hornfels contact zone. The estimated temperatures and $Xco_2$ for the formation of the transition zone show $300^{\circ}C$$440^{\circ}C$ and $0.07{\pm}0.05<Xco_2<0.02{\pm}0.01$ at 1 Kb respectively.
Ground-dwelling arthropods are important components in apple orchard providing beneficial ecological services of predation and decomposition as well as herbivory. Groundcovers are managed differentially in organic and conventional apple orchards influencing ground-dwelling arthropod assemblages. We conducted 3-year studies to assess the effects of orchard management relative to weed management on the abundance and diversity of ground-dwelling arthropods using pitfall trapping. Most arthropods were classified as higher taxonomical groups and functional feeding guilds, while carabid beetles were classified into species level. Coleoptera was the dominating taxon of all ground-dwelling arthropods. Abundance of herbivores and predators was significantly higher in organic apple orchards than conventional ones. Higher abundance and diversity of carabid beetles were found in organic orchards than in conventional orchards. The abundance of Araneae, Coleoptera, or carabid beetles was negatively correlated to weed management frequency. It was found that ground-dwelling arthropods were more influenced by weed management practices than the farming systems.
The community structure and health status of macrobenthos assemblages were investigated in the subtidal area of the Nakdong River estuary, Southern Coast of Korea. Benthic fauna samples were collected seasonally at 8 stations in the subtidal area of the Nakdong River estuary from February 2013 to October 2015. During the survey, a total of 380 species and 4,603 ind./m2 of macrobenthos in all sampling areas were collected. The major dominant species were the polychaetes Minuspio japonica, Pseudopolydora kempi, Heteromastus filifomis, Capitella capitata, the amphipod Grandidierella japonica and the bivalvia Arcuatula senhousia. Some species of polychaetes found in the study area consisted of opportunistic species that showed high densities when habitat condition was poor. On the other hand, macrobenthos assemblages in the study area were divided into brackish water and marine groups. Abundance was high in the brackish group, while the number of species and diversity index were high in the oceanic group. The three indices (AMBI, M-AMBI, and BHI) in the assessment of health levels based on the ecological characteristics and number of species in macrobenthic were commonly shown to be in good condition in the group of oceanic stations, while relatively poor conditions were reflected in the group of brackish stations. Compared to other indices, the M-AMBI index of the three indices for health assessment was considered to be a relatively more suitable one to assess benthic ecological conditions.
Microstructural characterization, identification of mineral assemblages, and K-Ar age dating of fault gouges from five Quaternary fault sites segmented along the northern Yangsan Fault, SE Korea were performed to understand formation condition and multiple activity of faults. The mean and median sizes of particles of bulk gouges vary among the studied faults: 1.75 ㎛ and 1.43 ㎛ for the Danguri Fault, 1.94 ㎛ and 1.79 ㎛ for the Yukjae Fault, 5.57 ㎛ and 4.16 ㎛ for the Yugye Fault, and 5.55 ㎛ and 2.31 ㎛ for the Bogyeongsa Fault. Fault gouges contain abundant secondary minerals, including smectite, chlorite, illite, kaolinite, laumontite, and mordenite, which are found in association with quartz and feldspar. K-Ar dating of the fault gouges (both bulk samples and separate size fractions) yields ages ranging from 59.1 to 18.8 Ma, with bulk ages of 47.6 Ma for the Yukjae Fault, 59.1 Ma for the Ansim Fault, 39.4 Ma for the Yugye Fault, and 22.6 Ma for the Bogyeongsa Fault. The finer fractions generally have younger K-Ar ages compared with the coarser fractions, and the finest fraction (<0.2 ㎛) is the youngest for each fault. Hydrothermal alteration of the gouges is considered to have occurred under low-temperature (100~200℃) conditions during faulting. Microstructural features and clay mineral assemblages of fault gouges and brecciated rocks should be considered when interpreting fault events and reactivation, in addition to age dating of faulting.
