  • This paper reports on the theoretical analysis of mixed lubrication for the piston ring. The analytical model is presented by using the average flow and asperity contact model. The cyclic variations of the nominal minimum oil film thickness are obtained by numerical iterative method. The total friction is calculated by using the hydrodynamic and asperity contact theory. The effect of the roughness height, pattern, and engine speed on the nominal minimum film thickness, friction force, ad frictional power losses are investigated. As the roughness height increases, the nominal oil film thickness and total friction force increase. Also, the effect of the surface roughness on the boundary friction is dominant at low engine speed and high asperity height. The longitudinal roughness pattern shows lower mean oil film pressure and thinner oil film thickness compared to the case of the isotropic and transverse roughness patterns.

  • The friction anisotropy of shear resistance can be selectively used in geo-structures. For example, larger axially loaded deep foundation, soil nails, and tiebacks increase load carrying capacity due to induced large shear resistance while pile penetration and soil sampling produce minimal shear resistance. Previous studies confirmed direction-dependent shear resistance induced by interface between soil and surface asperity of plate inspired by geometrical shape of snake scale. The aim of this paper is to quantitatively evaluate interface friction angle with different surface asperities. Using the modified direct shear test, a total of 51 cases, which sand are prepared at the relative density of 40%, are conduced including 9 plates, two shear direction (shearing direction against the height of surface asperity is increased or decreased during shearing test), and three initial vertical stress (100 kPa, 200 kPa, 300 kPa). Experimental results show that shear stress is increased with higher height of surface asperity, shorter length of surface asperity, and the shearing direction that the height of surface asperity increases. Also, interface friction angle is decreased with larger surface asperity ratio, and shearing direction with increasing height of surface asperity produces larger interface friction angle regardless of the surface asperity ratio.

  • Surface roughness plays a significant role in friction, wear, and lubrication in machine components. Most engineering surfaces have the nongaussian height distribution. So, in this study, contact simulations are conducted for not only gaussian surfaces but also nongaussian surfaces. Nongaussian rough surface considering the kurtosis is generated numerically And the effects of kurtosis on real contact area fraction, average gap, and mean asperity contact pressure are studied. It will be shown that the real contact area fraction and the mean asperity contact pressure are sensitive to the characteristics of surface geometry according to kurtosis.

  • The shear behavior of sawtoothed artificial joints grouted with cement milk was investigated in the laboratory under constant normal stress conditions. Tests were conducted on joints with asperities having inclinations of 16.7$^{\circ}$ and 26.6$^{\circ}$, compresive strengths having 15MPa and 47MPa under a given range of normal stresses varying from 0.76 to 1.91 MPa and at a free condition of pitching, rolling and dilatancy. Results show that the effect of asperities on shear strength increase is significant up to asperity height to grout thickness (t/a) ratio of 0.3∼1.0. Increase of cohesion is the main cause of shear strength increase in cement grouted sawtoothed artificial joints.

  • Most of previous studies have insufficiently investigated the shear behavior and fracturing characteristics, experimentally in respect to the change of size of tooth-shaped surface asperity such as length and slope angle in a broad range. This study investigates the influence of the length and slope angle of a tooth-shaped surface asperity on the fracturing characteristics and the interface shear strength by using direct shear test apparatus. A total of 36 interface direct shear tests were conducted by changing the three types of slope angle of surface asperity, four type of length, and three types of normal stress. The shape of fractured surface after the test was quantified by using a three-dimensional surface roughness measurement apparatus. Through the experimental test results, the characteristics of fractured shape of surface asperity according to the normal stress were investigated. In addition, fractured length and height were quantified at each slope angle of surface asperity under a certain normal stress condition.

  • It is essential to predict the amount of wear and surface parameters for a surface where relative motion occurs. In the asperity-based model for wear prediction, only the average contact pressure can be obtained. Hence, the accuracy of wear analysis is poor. In this study, DC-FFT is used to obtain the pressure of each node, and wear analysis is performed by considering the effect of the pressure gradient. The numerical surface generation method is used to create Gaussian, negatively skewed, and positively skewed surfaces for wear analysis. The spatial and height distributions of each surface are analyzed to confirm the effectiveness of the generated surface. Furthermore, wear analysis is performed using DC-FFT and Archard's wear formula. After analysis, it is confirmed that all peaks are removed and only valleys remain on the surface. The RMS roughness and Sk continue to decrease and Ku increases as the cycle progresses. It is observed that the surface parameters are significantly affected by the radius of curvature of the asperity. This analysis method is more accurate than the existing average wear and truncation models because the change in asperity shape during the wear process is reflected in detail.

  • The gas pressure acting on the rings in internal combustion engine influences the friction and wear characteristics. Inter-ring pressure variation during engine operation results from cylinder gas flow through a piston-ring pack. The flow passages consist of ring end gaps and clearances between the ring and the piston groove. The gas flow in the clearance between the ring and the groove is directly affected by the axial motion of the ring in the groove. In this paper the asperity contact force is newly considered in the prediction of the clearence between the ring and the groove surface. This term must be taken into account physically in case that the clearance get narrow rather than asperity height between the ring and the groove surface. Finally, comparisons of calculated inter-ring gas pressures based on the analytical method are made with the measured ones. The agereement was found to be good below midium engine speed, 3000rpm. In order to obtain accurate analytical results to the extend of high rpm range, it is recommended to include oil ring motion as well as top and second ring in analytical model.

  • The variations of the surface topographical parameters for the analysis of the pedestrian slip and fall accidents during the sliding friction between the specially prepared floor specimens and three working shoes were investigated. The profile ordinate data for each flooring specimen were obtained at 1.1 .mu.m intervals using a laser scanning confocal microscope system along to the direction of sliding. A number of surface roughness parameters, that is, the centre line average (c.l.a.) and root mean square (r.m.s.) roughness, maximum height (Rtm), maximum mean peak height (Rpm), maximum mean depth (Rvm), and average asperity slope were calculated using a computer program and compared with the dynamic friction results. The analysis showed that the surface parameters undergo marked variations during the sliding process, but the variations were statistically significant. It was found that amongst various surface parameters, the maximum depth (Rvm) and the average asperity slope of the asperities were the biggest variation during the sliding proceeding. This result confirms the previous study and may suggests a new approach to monitoring the flooring environments with their service as the effort to reduce the pedestrain slip accident.

  • This paper presents hot spot behaviors on the rubbing surface of disk-pad type brake by using coupled thermal-mechanical analysis technique. The height of micro-asperity on the rubbing surface is usually 2∼3 ${\mu}$m in practical disk brakes. Non-uniform micro-contacts between the disk and the rigid friction pads lead to high local temperature distributions, which may cause the material degradation, and develop hot spots, thermal cracks, and brake system failure at the end for a braking period. The friction temperatures on the rubbing surface of disk brakes in which are strongly related to the hot spot and thermal related wears are rapidly concentrated on the micro-contact asperities during braking. The computed FEM results show that the contact stress, friction induced temperature and thermal strain are highly concentrated on the rubbing micro-contact asperities even though the braking speed and force are small during the braking period. This hot spot may directly produce the slippage and various thermal wears on the brake-rubbing surface.

  • This paper reports on the friction characteristics of a piston ring pack with consideration of mixed lubrication. The analytical model is presented by using the average flow antral asperity contact model. The effect of operating condition, and design parameters on the MOFT, maximum friction force, and mean frictional power loss are investigated. Piston ring prick shows mixed and hydrodynamic lubrication characteristics. From the predicted results, it was fand that the ring tension and height of surface roughness have great influence on the frictional power losses in a ring pack. Especially, ring tension is a dominant factor for the reduction of friction loss and maintenance of oil film thickness.
