Investigation of the Optical and Cloud Forming Properties of Pollution, Biomass Burning, and Mineral Dust Aerosol

  • This thesis describes the use of measured aerosol size distributions and size-resolved hygroscopic growth to examine the physical and chemical properties of several particle classes. The primary objective of this work was to investigate the optical and cloud forming properties of a range of ambient aerosol types measured in a number of different locations. The tool used for most of these analyses is a differential mobility analyzer / tandem differential mobility analyzer (DMA / TDMA) system developed in our research group. To collect the data described in two of the chapters of this thesis, an aircraft-based version of the DMA / TDMA was deployed to Japan and California. The data described in two other chapters were conveniently collected during a period when the aerosol of interest came to us. The unique aspect of this analysis is the use of these data to isolate the size distributions of distinct aerosol types in order to quantify their optical and cloud forming properties. I used collected data during the Asian Aerosol Characterization Experiment (ACE-Asia) to examine the composition and homogeneity of a complex aerosol generated in the deserts and urban regions of China and other Asian countries. An aircraft-based tandem differential mobility analyzer was used for the first time during this campaign to examine the size-resolved hygroscopic properties of particles having diameters between 40 and 586 nm. Asian Dust Above Monterey (ADAM-2003) study was designed both to evaluate the degree to which models can predict the long-range transport of Asian dust, and to examine the physical and optical properties of that aged dust upon reaching the California coast. Aerosol size distributions and hygroscopic growth are measured in College Station, TX to investigate the cloud nucleating and optical properties of a biomass burning aerosol generated from fires on the Yucatan Peninsula. Measured aerosol size distributions and size-resolved hygroscopicity and volatility were used to infer critical supersaturation distributions of the distinct particle types that were observed during this period. The predicted CCN concentrations were used in a cloud model to determine the impact of the different aerosol types on the expected cloud droplet concentration. RH-dependent aerosol extinction coefficients are calculated at a wavelength of 550 nm.

중기 플라이스토세 전이기 전후 북태평양 중앙 해역 퇴적물에 기록된 풍성 퇴적물 입자 퇴적 양상 변화 복원 (Reconstruction of Changes in Eolian Particle Deposition Across the Mid-Pleistocene Transition in the Central Part of the North Pacific)

  • We investigated flux, grain size distribution, Nd-Sr isotope composition, mineral composition, and trace metal composition (REEs and Sc) of inorganic silicate fraction (ISF, mainly Asian dust with an unrestricted amount of volcanic materials) deposited during 600~1000 ka across the Mid-Pleistocene Transition at core NPGP 1401-2A (32°01'N, 178°59'E, 5205m) taken from the central part of the North Pacific. Our results reveal about a 2-fold increase in ISF flux after 800 ka, which is associated with an increase in La/Sc and a decrease in mean grain size. Asian dusts are finer than volcanic materials and La/Sc increases with the enhanced contribution of Asian dusts. Thus, increased flux after 800 ka can be explained by the increased contribution of Asian dusts relative to volcanic materials, likely due to an intensified Westerly Jet (WJ) and the drying of the Asian continent after the MPT. Mean grain size of ISF varies systematically in relation to glacial-interglacial cycles with a decrease during glacial stages, which is consistent with the previous results in the study area. Such a cyclical pattern is also attributed to the increase in the relative contribution of Asian dusts over volcanic components in glacial stages due to intensified WJ and drying of the Asian continent. Thus, it can be concluded that climate changes that had occurred across the MPT were similar to those of interglacial to glacial transitions at least in terms of the dust budget. Different from the Shatsky Rise, however, compositional changes associated with glacial-interglacial mean grain size fluctuations are not observed in Nd-Sr isotope ratios and trace element composition in our study of the Hess Rise. This may be attributed to the location of the study site far (> 4,000 km) from the volcanic sources. The volcanic component at the study site comprises less than 10% and varies within 3% over glacial-interglacial cycles. Such a small variation was not enough to imprint geochemical signals.

황사지역 발원지에 따른 표층퇴적물의 자연방사능 특성 (Natural radioactivity of surface sediments by source regions of the asian dust)

  • 중국의 주요 황사발원지로 알려진 오도스 사막, 알라샨 사막, 타클라마칸 사막 및 황토고원의 표층퇴적물에 분포되어 있는 우라늄계열의 $^{226}Ra$, 토륨계열의 $^{228}Ac$과 비 계열인 $^{40}K$과 같은 지각중 대표적인 자연방사성핵종의(naturally occurring radioactive nuclide: NORN) 방사능 특성을 조사하였다. 감마선 분광법을 이용하여 NORN의 비방사능(specific activity: SA, Bq/kg)을 측정하고 비방사능 비(specific activity ratio: SAR)를 산출하여 발원지에 따른 자연방사능 특성을 분석하였다. 발원지에 따른 세 핵종의 SA값은 $^{226}Ra$의 경우 세 사막지대에서는 평균 17.9~21.9 Bq/kg으로 매우 유사한 값을 가지는 반면 황토고원에서는 평균 35.0 Bq/Kg으로 큰 차이를 나타내고 있었다. $^{228}Ac$의 경우는 오도스 사막과 알라샨 사막에서는 평균 27.1~27.2 Bq/kg으로 거의 같은 값을 가지며 타클라마칸 사막에서는 31.7 Bq/kg 그리고 황토고원에서는 49.0 Bq/kg으로 큰 차이를 나타내고 있었다. $^{40}K$의 경우는 636~943 Bq/kg 으로 네 곳의 발원지에서 특별한 차이를 나타내지 않았다. $^{226}Ra/^{228}Ac$의 평균 SAR 값에서 네 곳의 발원지에서 0.708-0.721로 거의 일정하게 나타났고 $^{226}Ra/^{40}K$$^{228}Ac/^{40}K$의 평균 SAR 값을 보면, 오도스와 알라샨 사막은 각각 0.0209-0.0213과 0.0287-0.0320으로 유사한 값을 나타내고 있으나 타클라마칸 사막과 황토고원 표층시료들에서의 평균 SAR 값을 보면, 0.0353, 0.0506과 0.0493, 0.0773으로 상당한 차이를 나타낸다.

중국 뢰스의 나노 방해석 (Nanosized Calcite in the Chinese Loess)

  • 중국 서부에 분포하는 황토대지의 뢰스(loess)는 아시아 내륙에서 발생하는 광물먼지의 퇴적물일 뿐만 아니라, 우리나라 봄철 황사의 기원물질이기도 하다. 간빙기의 뢰스는 퇴적 후에 고토양으로 풍화되는 과정에서 풍성 일차 탄산염 광물 입자들이 용해되어 이차 탄산염광물로 재침전된다. 뢰스 및 고토양의 광물학적 분석에 의하면 풍성 탄산염 입자는 대부분 실트 크기이나, 재침전된 이차 탄산염광물은 너비가 $30{\sim}50nm$ 정도로 일정하고 다양한 길이를 갖는 나노 크기의 방해석들이었다. 나노방해석은 황토대지에서 점토광물과 함께 실트질 뢰스와 고토양의 세립 기질을 구성하는 주요 자생 광물로서, 우리나라에서 채집된 황사 입자에서 확인된 나노 방해석들의 기원물질로 해석된다.

위성자료를 이용한 2001-2010년 동안의 동아시아 지역 에어로졸 직접복사강제력 분석 (An Analysis of Aerosol Direct Radiative Forcing Using Satellite Data in East Asia During 2001-2010)

  • The shortwave aerosol direct radiative forcing (SWARF) was analyzed using the Clouds and Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) data in the East Asian region from 2001 to 2010. In the Yellow Sea and the Korean Peninsula, located in the leeward side of China, significantly negative high SWARF at the top of atmosphere (TOA) occurs due to the long-range transport of anthropogenic (e.g. sulphate) and natural aerosols (e.g. mineral dust) from the East Asian continent. Conversely, eastern China has much higher levels of SWARF at the surface (SFC) due to anthropogenically emitted aerosol than in the Yellow Sea and the Korean Peninsula. Since the radiative forcing of aerosols in the atmosphere are different in type, aerosol types were classified into sea salt+sulphate, smoke, sulphate and dust by using satellite data. The analysis on the SWARF by the classified aerosol types indicated that sulphate occupies a predominant portion of the atmosphere in the Yellow Sea and the Korean Peninsula in the summer. In particular, the annual averages of the summer TOA SWARF increased in the Yellow Sea and the Korean Peninsula from 2001 to 2010.

신생대 후기 북동태평양 지역 적도수렴대의 위치변화 (Paleo-latitude of the Intertropical Convergence Zone in the Northeast Pacific during Late Cenozoic)

  • The Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), where the southeast and northeast trade winds converge, is the effective climatological barrier that separates the southern and northern hemispheres in dust budget. Asian and N. American dusts dominate in fhe Pacific north of the ITCZ, while Central and S. American dust prevails south of the ITCZ. In order to understand the nature of latitudinal and depth-related variations of mineral composition in terms of relative position to the ITCZ, deep-sea core sediments were collected from $9^{\circ}N$ to $17^{\circ}N$ at a $2^{\circ}N$ interval along the $131.5^{\circ}W$ meridian and analyzed for mineral composition. The amount of illite in surface sediments decreases gradually from 65% at $17^{\circ}N\;to\;31^{\circ}N$ to 31% at 9f. In contrast, smectite increases from 11% to 56% southward. The observed mineralogical variation toward the ITCZ is attributed to the increased supply of volcaniclastic material transported via the southeast trade winds from the Central and South America source regions. Smectite-illite transition, a phenomenon that the amount of smectite increases over illite, occurs at around $10^{\circ}N$, the northern margin of the ITCZ. This result indicates that the change in latitudinal position of the ITCZ in geologic past could be recorded as a form of smectite-illite transition in deep-sea cores. The studied cores show down-core variation of mineral composition from illite-rich at the surface to smectite-rich clay suit at depths, similar to the latitudinal variation. The smectite-illite transitions observed in these cores are likely the records of changes in latitudinal position of the ITCZ. The depth and age of smectite-illite transition is getting shallower and younger toward equator, implying that the ITCZ was located farther north during late Tertiary and has shifted southward to the present position of $5^{\circ}N-10^{\circ}N$.

주요 황사발원지 토양의 지구화학적 특성 및 미량원소 존재형태 연구 (Geochemical Characteristics and Trace Metal Speciation of Soils in Major Source Area of Asian Dust)

  • 본 논문에서는 황사 발원지 (타클라마칸, 알라샨, 오도스 사막 및 황토고원) 토양 시료의 지구화학적 특성을 규명하고, 이들이 지표환경과 인체에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 하였다. 중국 건조지역에서 채취한 토양 시료 내 주원소 함량의 공간적 변화는 각 지역별로 크지 않았으며, 이는 각 지역 내 토양이 오랜 기간 동안 바람에 의해 균질하게 혼합된 것으로 해석된다. 한편 미량원소의 경우에는, 시료 채취 지점에 따라 미약한 함량의 차이를 나타낸다. 이들 중 Cr, Cu, As, Co, Ni, V, Y, Sc, Sn, Pb, Zn, Cd, Cs, Li, Th, U 등은 원소 간에 서로 양의 상관관계를 보이며, 이들의 특성은 황토고원과 다른 사막 (타클라마칸, 알라샨 및 오도스 사막) 토양에서 뚜렷하게 구분된다. 모든 사막 및 황토고원 토양의 Fe의 지구화학적 존재형태는 대부분 "잔류형 (85% 이상)"으로 나타났으나, Mn 및 Ca의 존재형태는 사막에 따라 존재형태의 차이가 현저하게 나타났다. Mn은 황토고원 토양에서는 "산화철망간광물 수반형 (55.4%)"이, 그리고 타클라마칸 사막에서는 "탄산염광물 수반형 (33.8%)"이 다른 사막 토양에 비해 2-5배 높게 나타났다. 또한 Ca의 경우에는 타클라마칸 및 알라샨 사막 토양에서 "탄산염광물 수반형"이 각각 75.9% 및 50.5%로 높게 나타났으나, 황토고원 (6.6%)과 오도스 사막 (2.1%)에서는 낮게 나타났다. 사막 및 황토고원 내 미량원소의 이동도를 기준으로 이들 미량원소를 5개의 그룹으로 분류하였으며, Cd, Pb 및 Cu의 이동도가 각각 87%, 33% 및 30% 이상으로 나타났다. 따라서 사막 및 황토고원 내 Cd, Pb 및 Cu는 지표수 등과 반응하였을 때 쉽게 용해되어 지표환경 및 인체 건강에 악영향을 줄 가능성이 있음을 지시하고 있다.

전남 나주시 장동리 지역에 노출된 적갈색 점토-실트 퇴적물의 광물 및 지화학적 특성 (Mineralogical and Geochemical Properties of Clay-silt sediments Exposed in Jangdongri, Naju, Korea)

  • 전남 나주시 장동리 지역의 화강암 풍화대를 피복하는 적갈색 점토-실트 퇴적물 단면(~2 m)에 대하여 광물학적 및 지화학적 특성 분석을 실시하였다. 퇴적물은 주로 석영(50%)과 점토광물(45%)로 구성되어 있으며, 소량의 K-장석, 침철석, 적철석, 깁사이트로 구성되어 있다. 점토광물은 일라이트(일라이트, 일라이트-스멕타이트 혼합층), 질석(질석, 수산화-Al 질석), 고령석(캐올리나이트, 할로이사이트) 계열의 점토광물로 구성되어 있다. 광물 및 화학조성의 수직 함량변화는 미미하며, 사장석과 녹니석이 전반적으로 결핍되어 있으나 최상부에 소량 함유되어 있다. 점토광물의 주성분이 일라이트 계열이므로 퇴적물의 기원물질은 주변 고령토질 화강암 풍화물이 아니라, 먼 기원지에서 유래한 풍성퇴적물로 판단된다. 현생 황사의 광물조성과 비교하면, 퇴적 후의 심한 화학적 풍화작용으로 사장석과 K-장석이 거의 없어지고, 석영과 점토광물로 구성된 광물학적 특성을 갖게 되었다. 풍화과정에서 사장석과 녹니석은 각각 고령토 광물과 질석으로 변질되었으며, 함철 유색광물의 풍화과정에서 침철석과 적철석이 침전되어 퇴적물이 적갈색을 띠게 되었다. 이 지역의 적갈색 점토-실트는 한반도 타지역 풍성퇴적물과 광물학적 및 지화학적 특성을 공유하므로 풍성퇴적물로 추정되지만, 이에 대해서는 퇴적물 연대측정이나 동위원소 분석 등의 추가 검증이 필요하다.

Single-particle Characterization of Aerosol Particles Collected Nearby a Lead Smelter in China

  • China has been a top producer and exporter of refined lead products in the world since the year 2000. After the phasing-out of leaded gasoline in the late 1990s, non-ferrous metallurgy and coal combustion have been identified as potential major sources of aerosol lead in China. This paper presents the single particle analytical results of ambient aerosol particles collected near a lead smelter using a scanning electron microscopy- energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX). Aerosol particle samples were collected over a 24-hour period, starting from 8 pm on 31 May 2002, using a high volume TSP sampler. For this near source sample, 73 particles among 377 particles analyzed (accounting for 19.4%) were lead-containing particles mixed with other species (S, Cl, K, Ca, and/or C), which probably appeared to be from a nearby lead smelter. Lead-containing particles of less than $2{\mu}m$ size in the near source sample were most frequently encountered with the relative abundances of 42%. SEM-EDX analysis of individual standard particles, such as PbO, PbS, $PbSO_4$, $PbCl_2$, and $PbCO_3$, was also performed to assist in the clear identification of lead-containing aerosol particles. Lead-containing particles were frequently associated with arsenic and zinc, indicating that the smelter had emitted those species during the non-ferrous metallurgical process. The frequently encountered particles following the lead-containing particles were mineral dust particles, such as aluminosilicates (denoted as AlSi), $SiO_2$, and $CaCO_3$. Nitrate- and sulfate-containing particles were encountered frequently in $2-4{\mu}m$ size range, and existed mostly in the forms of $Ca(NO_3,SO_4)/C$, $(Mg,Ca)SO_4/C$, and $AlSi+(NO_3,SO_4)$. Particles containing metals (e.g., Fe, Cu, and As) in this near source sample had relative abundances of approximately 10%. Although the airborne particles collected near the lead smelter contained elevated levels of lead, other types of particles, such as $CaCO_3$-containing, carbonaceous, metal-containing, nitrates, sulfates, and fly-ash particles, showed the unique signatures of samples influenced by emissions from the lead smelter.

Air Pollution Trends in Japan between 1970 and 2012 and Impact of Urban Air Pollution Countermeasures

  • Air pollution trends in Japan between 1970 and 2012 were analyzed, and the impact of air pollution countermeasures was evaluated. Concentrations of CO decreased from 1970 to 2012, and in 2012, the Japanese environmental quality standard (EQS) for CO was satisfied. Concentrations of $SO_2$ dropped markedly in the 1970s, owing to use of desulfurization technologies and low-sulfur heavy oil. Major reductions in the sulfur content of diesel fuel in the 1990s resulted in further decreases of $SO_2$ levels. In 2012, the EQS for $SO_2$ was satisfied at most air quality monitoring stations. Concentrations of $NO_2$ decreased from 1970 to 1985, but increased from 1985 to 1995. After 1995, $NO_2$ concentrations decreased, especially after 2006. In 2012, the EQS for $NO_2$ was satisfied at most air quality monitoring stations, except those alongside roads. The annual mean for the daily maximum concentrations of photochemical oxidants (OX) increased from 1980 to 2010, but after 2006, the $98^{th}$ percentile values of the OX concentrations decreased. In 2012, the EQS for OX was not satisfied at most air quality monitoring stations. Non-methane hydrocarbon (NMHC) concentrations generally decreased from 1976 to 2012. In 2011, NMHC concentrations near roads and in the general environment were nearly the same. The concentration of suspended particulate matter (SPM) generally decreased. In 2011, the EQS for SPM was satisfied at 69.2% of ambient air monitoring stations, and 72.9% of roadside air-monitoring stations. Impacts from mineral dust from continental Asia were especially pronounced in the western part of Japan in spring, and year-round variation was large. The concentration of $PM_{2.5}$ generally decreased, but the EQS for $PM_{2.5}$ is still not satisfied. The air pollution trends were closely synchronized with promulgation of regulations designed to limit pollutant emissions. Trans-boundary OX and $PM_{2.5}$ has become a big issue which contains global warming chemical species such as ozone and black carbon (so called SLCP: Short Lived Climate Pollutants). Cobeneficial reduction approach for these pollutants will be important to improve both in regional and global atmospheric environmental conditions.
