  • Recently, Both rapid economic growth and high-quality native finishing materials demand in buildings such as local infrastructure facilities and cultural facilities have increased along with local quarries. So, increasing local quarries and environmental pollution occurred in quarries get the eyes to damaged area of the surroundings. As an example, carcinogen such as solid formed to fixing asbestos and dust have damaged to local resident. Especially, Radon gas released from asbestos can exist everywhere on earth, released soil and rock as radioactive substances, can be caused lung cancer followed by a smoking. When pollution source to indoor air quality that lacking ventilation rate of the residential building moved in a cycle, human responses such as headache, dizziness, etc. get appear, so on it threatened resident's physical condition. Thus, we need to urgent attention to reduction harmful substance. In the case of radon gas of the pollution source to indoor air quality in housing, it has characteristic that keep on going through half-life released from source, we need to control radon gas source than source removal. We set on vermiculite addition ratio to 10% which has harmful substances adsorption performance, proceed experiment to basalt waste rock addition ratio 50, 60, 70, 80(%). The result of an experiment, based on 'KS F 4035, precast terrazzo', we can be obtainable in the best terrazzo at basalt waste rock addition ratio 70%.

  • Objectives: The lung cancer mortality in Korea has increased remarkably during the last 20 years, and has been the first leading cause of cancer-related deaths since 2000. The aim of the current study was to examine the time trends of occupational lung cancer and carcinogens exposure during the period 2006-2009 in South Korea, by assessing the proportion of occupational burden. Methods: We defined occupational lung cancer for surveillance, and developed a reporting protocol and reporting website for the surveillance of occupational lung cancer. The study patients were chosen from 9 participating university hospitals in the following 7 areas: Seoul, Incheon, Wonju, Daejeon, Daegu, Busan, and Gwangju. Results: The combined proportion of definite and probable occupational lung cancer among all lung cancers investigated in this study was 10.0%, 8.6%, 10.7%, and 15.8% in the years 2006 to 2009, respectively, with an average of 11.7% over the four-year study period. The main carcinogens were asbestos, crystalline silica, radon, polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), diesel exhaust particles, chromium, and nickel. Conclusion: We estimated that about 11.7% of the incident lung cancer was preventable. This reveals the potential to considerably reduce lung cancer by intervention in occupational fields.

  • The objective was to evaluate the quality of harvested rainwater of the roofing materials used and the presence of lichens/mosses on the roofing surface. This experiment was studied in the field where five pilot structures with different roofing materials (i.e., wooden shingle tiles, wooden shingle tiles (including mosses), concrete tiles, clay tiles [Gi-Wa] and slate tiles) were installed. As a result, the clay tiles [Gi-Wa] was found to be the most suitable for rainwater harvesting applications. It was due to the disinfection from ultraviolet light and high temperature according to characteristic of roofing materials. Comparison with quality of rainwater on that wooden shingle tiles with and without including mosses, which may affect the concentration of and wooden shingle tiles including mosses, mosses may affect concentration of TOC, nitrate, and sulfate. Additionally, the average concentration of asbestos was determined to be measured at $0.002/cm^3$ for the slate tiles. The value satisfied with it met the Ministry of Environment's Multi-use facility standard and Ministry of Labor's Office standard ($0.01/cm^3$).

  • Our laboratoy has been participated in Proficiency Analytical Testing (PAT) program which is operated by the Americal Industrial Hygiene Association in cooperation with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The program is designed to assist a laboratory improve its analytical performance by providing samples on a quarterly basis, evaluating the results, and providing reports on how well the laboratory performed. Evaluation of the results reported here covers five rounds of the PAT program (round 121~round 125). The way a laboratory is evaluated by PAT program is as follows: 1) There is no overall proficiency rating given to a laboratory. 2) A proficiency rating is given for each type of analyze (i.e., metals, silica, asbestos, solvents) that a laboratory analyzed. 3) Proficiency is rated acceptable ("A") if Z score lies between -3 and +3, and unacceptable if Z score is either higher than +3 ("H") or lower than -3 ("Lo"). Z score = (reported data - reference value) / standard deviation 4) For a laboratory to be rated proficient it must either have had no outliers over the most recent two rounds or of the samples actually analyzed over the past year (past four rounds), 75 % or more of the analyze sample results must be acceptable. According to the above rating criteria of PAT program, performance of metals including cadmium, lead, chromium and zinc, and asbestos sample analyses were rated acceptable ("A"). For silica analyses, all samples except one out of four samples in round 122 was rated high("H") were acceptable showing 95 % of ing 95 % of acceptance rate (19/20) throughout the rounds. Analyses of organic solvents were done on 52 samples in 9 types including methanol(MOH), 1,1,1-trichloroethane(MCM), tetrachloroethylene(PCE), trichloroethylene(TCE), benzene(BNZ), o-xylene(OXY), toluene(TOL), chloroform(CFM), 1,2-dichloroethane(DCE). All samples analyzed were rated acceptable except 2 samples that were rated high; one out of each four MCM and TCE samples in round 121, and one that was low out of four o-xylene analyses in round 122 indicating 94 % of acceptance rate(49/52) throughout the rounds. According to the laboratory rating criteria, our laboratory is rated proficient so far for all types of contaminants.

  • Tribological behavior of NAO type brake linings containing different volume ratios of graphite and Sb$_2$S$_3$ was investigated using a scale dynamometer. Three different test modes consisting of stop, drag, and fade tests were employed to elucidate the effect of the solid lubricants on brake performance. Results of this work showed that the two solid lubricants, graphite and Sb$_2$S$_3$, significantly affected friction characteristics at various braking situations. Compared with the brake linings containing a single lubricant, the brake linings containing both solid lubricants showed better friction stability due to the synergistic effect of the two disparate lubricants during the stop and the drag test. In particular, in the case of containing two solid lubricants, the brake lining with higher contents of graphite showed better fade resistance than others.

  • Nowadays, noise and vibration phenomena of a disc brake system have been given various names that provide some definitions of sound and vibration emitted such as grind, grunt, moan, squeak, squeal, judder and wire brush. The most common and annoying noise of a disc brake system is squeal noise. It is defined as noise whose frequency content is 1 kHz and higher with excessively high and irrigating sound pressure levels. In this paper, the noise and vibration characteristics of a disc brake system have been investigated to develop the fusion-type friction material, which overcomes the low steel and non-asbestos organic friction materials. For the purpose, both experimental evaluation and complex eigenvalue analysis have been carried out.

  • There is a trend that the total number of cancer cases is steadily increasing as the population grows. It has been estimated that 85% of the cancer rate in the U.S. is attributed to environmental factors. Among the environmental factors, diet and nutrition appear to be related to the largest number of human cancers. Diet and nutrition might be related to cancer by several mechanisms. Food may contain a direct carcinogen or precursors that become carcinogens by spontanous reactions, or by host metabolism, or through the actions of microbial flora. Chemicals that cause cancers generally have reactive electrophilic centers which can combine with electron-rich atoms in nucleic acids and cause cancers by changing the genetic activity of the cells. A variety of factors in foods might be involved in the etiology of carcinogenesis. Chemicals in food that cause cancers include carcinogens of plants and animal origin and also those in drinking water. Other then these, fungal metabolites alcohol, asbestos, heavy metals, pesticides, and food additives might be included as food carcinogenesis. The method of cooking foods also might contribute to carcinogenesis. Some chemicals in foods act as promoters in carcinogenesis. Prevention of cancers by dietary practises have received much interest. Consumption of certain vegetables or cellulose can reduce carcinogenic activity of several compounds. A variety of antioxidants or micronutrients may be effective anticarciongens. Glutathione in the soluble fraction of the cells, is a major defense against oxidative and alkylating carcinogens. Recently anticarcinogenic activity of chlorophyll was demonstrated. Daily consumption of milk appears to effectively reduce stomach cancer.

  • The roof improvement project is being carried out under the government's leadership for the sake of national welfare. The project is to replace the asbestos slate roof with a metallic one. In this study, the structural safety of the improved roof was examined and the project guidelines were reviewed. The causes of the roof damage were investigated and the structural analysis was performed for the roof frame subject to wind and snow loads. Metallic roof assemblies have higher strength and load resistance capability than usual slate ones, so the structural safety is governed by the frame. The stresses of the roof frame elements caused by the wind and snow loads were analyzed according to roof frame with various spacings between the rafters and the purlins. Wind load analysis was performed by 24, 28, and 38 m/sec of the basic wind speed. Snow load analysis was carried out by 0.5, 1.0 and $2.0kN/m^2$ of the ground snow load. As the analysis result, the current spacing and the size of the lumber did not satisfy the Korean building code specification. To secure the safety of the roof improvement project, the spacing of the roof frame elements and the size of the lumber should be determined based on the analysis results by structural engineers.
