  • The theory of consolidation has been achieved remarkable development in terms of theory such as finite consolidation theory, two dimensional Rendulic consolidation theory. Though those theories are well defined, the analysis is by no means straightforward, because associated properties are very difficult to determine in the laboratory, Therefore Terzaghi's one dimensional consolidation theory and Barron's cylindrical consolidation theory are still widely used in engineering practice. The theoretical shortcomings of those consolidation theories and uncertainties of associated properties make inevitably some discrepancy between theoretical and field settlements. Field settlement measurement by settlement plate is, therefore, widely used to overcome the discrepancy. Ultimate settlement is one of the most important factor of embankment construction on soft soils. Nowadays the ultimate settlement prediction methods using field settlement data are widely accepted as a helpful tool for field settlement analysis of embankment construction on soft soils. Among the various methods of ultimate settlement prediction, hyperbolic method and Asaoka's method are most commonly used because of their simplicity and ability to give a reasonable estimate of consolidation settlement. In this paper, the reliability of hyperbolic method and Asaoka's method has been examined using analytical methods. It is shown that both hyperbolic method and Asaoka's method are significantly affected by the direction of drainage.

  • In general, two methods have been used to predict settlement of soft ground. One method is Terzaghi's one dimensional consolidation theory which gives time-settlement relationship using the standard consolidation test results. The other is forecasting method of ground settlement to be occured in the future using in-situ monitoring data. The above both methods have some defects in application manner or in itself especially in very deep and soft clayey ground. In view of the lessons and experiences of soft ground improvement projects, several techniques were proposed for more accurate theorectical calculation of consolidation settlement as follows ; ① Subdivision of soft ground, ② Consideration of secondary compression, ③ Using the modified compression index, etc. And also, revised hyperbolic fitting method was suggested to minimize the error of predicted future settlement. In addition, revised De-Beer equation of immediate settlement of loose sandy soil was proposed to overcome the tendency to show too small settlement calculation results by original De-Deer equation. And also, considering the various effects of settlement delay in the improved ground by vertical drains, time-settlement caculation equation(Onoue method) was revised to match the tendency of settlement delay by using the characteristics of discharge capacity decreases of vertical drain with time elapse by the pattern of hyperbolic equation.

  • In stability and settlement management of soft ground, the settlement prediction technology has been continuously developed and used to reduce construction cost and confirm the exact land use time. However, the preexistence prediction methods such as hyperbolic method, Asaoka method and Hoshino method are difficult to predict the settlement accurately at the beginning of consolidation because the accurate settlement prediction is possible only after many measurement periods have passed. It is judged as the reason for estimating the future settlement through the proportionality assumption of the slope which the preexistence prediction method computes from the settlement curve. In this study, ARIMA technique is introduced among time series analysis techniques and compared with preexistence prediction methods. ARIMA method was predictable without any distinction of ground conditions, and the results similar to the existing method are predicted early (final settlement).

  • There are many large-scale coastal region landfill and land development by loading to use territory efficiently, this regions are mostly soft clay ground. Constructing structures and road on the soft ground bring about engineering problems like ground shear fracture and a big amount of consolidation by bearing capacity. Improvement of soft soil is required to secure soil strength and settlement control. In improvement of soft soil, predict for the amount of settlement based on field surveyed reports are important element for estimating pre-loading banking height and the final point of consolidation. In this study, there is calculating theoretical settlement by analyzing field surveyed report and ground investigation to improvement of soft soil with pre-loading and vertical drain method. And present settlement prediction method reflect soil characteristics in Gimpo Hangang site by analysing prediction settlement and observational settlement during compaction using hyperbolic, ${\sqrt{s}}$, Asaoka method.

  • This study analyzed degree of disturbance, using specimens by laboratory test with large block specimens and piston samplers collected from the Korea's two typical soft ground districts: South coast Gwangyang and Yangsan. To assess the characteristics of compression index of laboratory test incurred by disturbance, the compression index of laboratory test was compared with the back analysis compression index resulting from the analysis of the measured settlement. The analysis of specimen disturbance of the laboratory test results with the piston specimens of the two districts found that the qualities of most specimens were poor and the settlement predicted by the laboratory test compression index was underestimated. The analysis of test material taken from nearby areas proved that the disturbance degrees of large block specimens were lower than that of the piston specimens. The hyperbolic method, Hoshino method, Asaoka method, and ${\sqrt{S}}$ method, all of which are predictive methods using measured settlement, were employed to reach a conclusion that reliabilities of each predictive method except predictive material of a few points were the same. To compensate the disturbance effects on compression index of the piston specimens, we suggested a new modification formula that estimates compression index of piston specimens, using Schmertmann's corrected compression index, and back analysis compression index from the analysis of predictive settlement.
