To reflect the size effect of material $(1\sim15{\mu}m)$ during plastic deformation of polycrystalline copper, a constitutive equation which includes the strain gradient plasticity theory and intrinsic material length model is coupled with the finite element analysis and applied to plane strain deformation problem. The method of least square has been used to calculate the strain gradient at each element during deformation and the effect of distributed force on the strain gradient is investigated as well. It shows when material size is less than the intrinsic material length $(1.54{\mu}m)$, its deformation behavior is quite different compared with that computed from the conventional plasticity. The generation of strain gradient is greatly suppressed, but it appears again as the material size increases. Results also reveal that the strain gradient leads to deformation hardening. The distributed force plays a role to amplify the strain gradient distribution.
In order to evaluate strength of spot welded joint, at first it is importent that we should know strain distribution near nugget zone. During loading, in HAZ, compressive strain increase with Increase of load, but in nugget zone tensile strain increase. During unloading, on the other hand, even through the decreases, the strain variation is not almost appeared in nugget zone and HAZ. In nugget boundary zone, the strain range increases continuously along with load increase on outer surface, but the strain increases continunously and decreases rapidly beyond yield strength on inner surface. In this paper, strain distribution are measured in inner and outer surface with variation of thickness and load under tensile-shear load. Tensile-shear strength increased as with increase of specimen thickness. As for thickness increase rates are 25%, 50%, 100%, and 150%, tensile-shear strength in crease rates are 40%, 81%, 130% and 228%.

Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors already have been the focus for structural health monitoring (SHM) due to their distinguishing advantages. However, as bare optical fiber is very fragile, bare FBG strain sensor without encapsulation can not properly be applied in practical infrastructures. Therefore encapsulation techniques for making encapsulated FBG strain sensor show very important in pushing forward the application of FBG strain sensors in SHM. In this paper, a simplified approximate method to analyze the stress transferring rules for embedded FBG strain sensors in concrete monitoring is put forward according to mechanics of composite materials. Shear lag theory is applied to analyze the stress transferring rule of embedded FBG strain sensor in measured host material at the first time. The measured host objects (concrete) and the encapsulated FBG strain sensor are regarded as a composite, and then the stress transfer formula and stress transfer coefficient of encapsulated FBG strain sensor are obtained.
The high temperature deformation behavior of SCM 440 can be characterized by the hot torsion test in the temperature ranges of $900^{\circ}C$~$1100^{\circ}C$ and strain rate ranges of 0.05/sec~5/sec. The aim of this paper is to establish the quantitative equation of the volume fraction of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) as a function of processing variables, such as strain rate ($\varepsilon$), temperature (T), and strain ('$\varepsilon$). During hot deformation, the evolution of microstructure could be analyzed from work hardening rate ($\theta$). For the exact prediction of dynamic softening mechanism the critical strain ($\varepsilon_c$), the strain for maximum softening rate ($\varepsilon^*$ and Avrami' exponent (m') were quantitatively expressed by dimensionless parameter, Z/A, respectively. The transformation-effective strain-temperature curve for DRX could be composed. It was found that the calculated results were agreed with the experimental data for the steel at any deformation conditions.
Statement of problem. In distal extension removable partial denture, the preservation of health of abutment teeth is very important, but abutment teeth are subjected to unfavorable stress. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to investigate the biomechanical effects of mandibular removable partial dentures with various prosthetic designs using strain gauge analysis. Material and methods. Artificial teeth of both canines were anchored bilaterally in a mandibular edentulous model made of resin. Bilateral distal extension removable partial dentures with splinted and unsplinted abutments were fabricated. Group 1 : Clasp-retained mandibular removable partial denture with unsplinted abuhnents Group 2 : Clasp-retained mandibular removable partial denture with splinted abutments by 6-unit bridge Group 3 : Bar-retained mandibular removable partial denture Strain gauges were bonded on the labial plate of the mandibular resin model, approximately 2 mm close to the abutments. Two vertical experimental loadings (100N and 200N) were applied subsequently via two miniature load cells that were placed at mandibular first molar regions. Strain measurements were performed and simultaneously monitored from a computer connected to data acquisition system. For within-group evaluations, t-test was used to compare the strain values and for between-group comparisons, a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used and Duncan test was used as post hoc comparisons. Results. Strain values increased as the applied load increased from 100N to 200N for all groups (p<.05). The strain values of group 1 and 2 were tensile under loadings. In contrast, strain values of group 3 were compressive in nature. Under 100N loading, group 1 showed higher strain values than group 3 in absolute quantity (p<.05). Under 200N loading, group 3 showed higher strain values than group 1 and 2 in absolute quantity (p<.05). Group 1 showed higher strain values than group 2 (p<.05). Conclusion. Splinting of two isolated abutments by bridge reduced the peri-abutment strain in comparison with unsplinted abutments. Strain of bar-retained removable partial denture increased much more as applied load increased, but was compressive in nature.
This is the fifth in a series of companion papers dealing with the dynamic hardening properties of various marine structural steels at intermediate strain rates. Five steps of strain rate levels (0.001, 1, 10, 100, 200/s) and three steps of temperature levels (LT ($-40^{\circ}C$), RT, and HT ($200^{\circ}C$)) were taken into account for the dynamic tensile tests of three types of marine structural steels: API 2W50 and Classifications EH36 and DH36. The total number of specimens was 180 pieces. It was seen that the effects of dynamic hardening became clearer at LT than at RT. Dynamic strain aging accompanying serrated flow stress curves was also observed from high temperature tests for all kinds of steels. The dynamic hardening factors (DHFs) at the two temperature levels of LT and RT were derived at the three plastic strain levels of 0.05, 0.10, 0.15 from dynamic tensile tests. Meanwhile, no DHFs were found for the high temperature tests because a slight negative strain rate dependency due to dynamic strain aging had occurred. A new formulation to determine material constant D in a Cowper-Symonds constitutive equation is provided as a function of the plastic strain rate, as well as the plastic strain level. The proposed formula is verified by comparing with test flow stress curves, not only at intermediate strain rate ranges but also at high strain rate ranges.
This study was carried out as basic researches to develop the leaf vegetable harvester. This study was conducted to investigate physical and rheological properties of bundled leaf vegetables with stem (Chinese leek, Crown daisy and Chamnamul) as test materials held and picked-up by a machine. Stress-strain behavior, stress relaxation, and strain recovery for the bundled materials were analyzed using simple Maxwell model. Physical and rheological properties of the materials were investigated by measuring rupture load, deformation and stress experimentally. Also, strain recovery time when unloading was measured using super high speed camera. Recorded recovery time for stress-strain behavior was0.026 s for Chinese leek with liner strain recovery, 0.046 s for Crown daisy and 0.05 s for Chamnamul with non-linear strain recovery. Furthermore, the strain recovery time for permanent deformation was 0.026 s, 0.046 s, and 0.05 s for Chinese Leek, Crown daisy and Chamnamul, respectively. Finally, strain recovery time and strain recovery ratio for the test materials were 0.17 s, 60.4% in Chinese leek, 0.12 s, 55.3% in Crown daisy, 0.15 s, 58.7% in Chamnamul. Here strain recovery time means that how fast the test materials are recovered from initial deformation and strain recovery ratio means how much the test materials are recovered from initial deformation. The above results show that the test materials can be held enough and moved by the belts.
We constructed a defined physical and genetic map of H. pylori strain 51, previously isolated from a Korean patient with a duodenal ulcer, by combining a restriction analysis by pulse-field gel electrophoresis with the construction of a BAC library. A Notl-digest of H. pylori strain 51 genome yielded seven fragments, from which the genomic size was estimated to be 1,698$\pm$24 kb. The BAC library was constructed from 50 to 200 kb fragments of HindIII-digested genomic DNA. From 700 BAC clones, an ordered overlapping maxi-set of 82 BAC clones was assembled that covered the entire genome. The positions of 15 genes were localized in the strain 51 genome with 4-22 kb of resolution and were compared with their orthologues in strain 26695 and strain J99. The arrangement of the 15 genes was identical in strain 51 and strain J99, except for flaA and hpaA. The plasticity zone of strain 51, like that of strain J99, was located in the single region, and was shorter than those of strain 26695 and strain J99. The strain 51 plasticity zone consisted of ORFs common only to strain 51 and J99 or to strain 51 and 26695, as well as strain 51-specific ORFs. Three genetic translocations and/or inversions were found between orthologue ORFs in strain 51 and strain J99. These results show that the chromosomal organization of strain 51 differs from Western strains such as strain 26695 and strain J99.
To investigate the stress-strain relation of PVC-FRP Confined Concrete (PFCC) column with RC ring beam joint subjected to eccentric compression, the experiment of 13 joint specimens, which were designed with principle of "strong joint and weak column", were presented. Several variable parameters, such as reinforcement ratio, width and height of ring beam, FRP strips spacing and eccentricity, were considered. The specimens were eventually damaged by the crushing of concrete, the fracture of PVC tube and several FRP strips. With the FRP strips spacing or eccentricity increased, the ultimate carrying capacity of specimens declined. The strain of FRP strips and axial strain of PVC tube decreased as FRP strips spacing decreased. The decrease of eccentricity would slow down the development of strain of FRP strips and axial strain of PVC tube. The slope of stress-strain curve of PFCC column decreased as FRP strips spacing or eccentricity increased. The ultimate strain of PFCC column reduced as FRP strips spacing increased, while the effect of eccentricity on the ultimate strain of PFCC was not distinct. Considering the influence of eccentricity on the stress-strain relation, a modified stress-strain model for conveniently predicting the weak PFCC column and strong RC ring beam joint under eccentric compression was proposed and it was in good agreement with the experimental data.
In this present article, the mechanical behavior of single-walled black phosphorene nanotubes (SW-αPNTs) is simulated using molecular dynamics (MD). The proposed model is subjected to the axial loading and the effects of morphological parameters, such as the mono-vacancy defect and strain rate on the tensile behavior of the zigzag and armchair SW-αPNTs are studied as a pioneering work. In order to assess the accuracy of the MD simulations, the stress-strain response of the current MD model is successfully verified with the efficient quantum mechanical approach of the density functional theory (DFT). Along with reproducing the DFT results, the accurate MD simulations successfully anticipate a significant variation in the stress-strain curve of the zigzag SW-αPNTs, namely the knick point. Predicting such mechanical behavior of SW-αPNTs may be an important design factor for lithium-ion batteries, supercapacitors, and energy storage devices. The simulations show that the ultimate stress is increased by increasing the diameter of the pristine SW-αPNTs. The trend is identical for the ultimate strain and stress-strain slope as the diameter of the pristine zigzag SW-αPNTs enlarges. The obtained results denote that by increasing the strain rate, the ultimate stress/ultimate strain are respectively increased/declined. The stress-strain slope keeps increasing as the strain rate grows. It is worth noting that the existence of mono-atomic vacancy defects in the (12,0) zigzag and (0,10) armchair SW-αPNT structures leads to a drop in the tensile strength by amounts of 11.1% and 12.5%, respectively. Also, the ultimate strain is considerably altered by mono-atomic vacancy defects.
