  • Large-scale coastal construction projects, such as land reclamation and dykes, were constructed from the late twentieth century in Yoobu-Do region. Land reclamation combined with the dynamics of tidal currents may have accelerated local sedimentation and erosion resulting in rapid reformation of coastal topography. This study presents the results of the topography changes around Yoobu-Do by large-scale coastal constructions using time-series waterline extraction technique of Landsat TM/ETM+ data acquired from 1998 to 2012. Furthermore, the Freeman-Durden decomposition was applied to fully polarimetric RADARSAT-2 SAR data in order to analyze the scattering mechanisms of the deposited surface. According to the case study, the deposition areas were over 4.5 $km^2$ and distributed in the east, northeast, and west of Yoobu-Do. In the eastern deposition area, it was found that the scattering mechanism was difference from other deposition areas possibly indicating that different types of soil were deposited.

  • This study was carried out to correct shadow area in urban area on KOMPSAT-3 satellite image. For this study, we analyzed characteristics of the shadow area represented by artificial structures in urban area. The proposed shadow correction method divides shadow area into umbra and penumbra areas according to intensity of darkness. The umbra area was detected through the histogram analysis and the statistical method of the NIR image, and then penumbra area and the sunlit area were detected from around the detected umbra area. The correction of the detected umbra and penumbra area were performed by applying the linear correlation correction method. As a result, it was confirmed that the proposed shadow correction method was visually performed well. Quantitative analysis was performed through profile analysis. It is proved that proposed method is useful for shadow area correction.

  • Tidal flats develop along the south coast ofthe Korean peninsula. These areas are famous for sea farming. Specially, strong and coherent radar backscattering signals are observed over oyster sea farms that consist of artificial structures. Tide height in oyster farm is possible to measure by using interferometric phase and intensity of SAR data. It is assumed that the radar signals from oyster farm could be considered as double-bouncing returns by vertical and horizontal bars. But, detailed backscattering mechanism and polarimetric characteristics in oyster farm had not been well studied. We could not demonstrate whether the assumption is correct or not and exactly understand what the properties of back scattering were in oyster farm without full polarimetric data. The results of AIRSAR L-band POLSAR data, experiments in laboratory and JERS-l images are discussed. We carried out an experiment simulating a target structure using vector network analyser (Y.N.A.) in an anechoic chamber at Niigata University. Radar returns from vertical poles are stronger than those from horizontal poles by 10.5 dB. Single bounce components were as strong as double bounce components and more sensitive to antenna look direction. Double bounce components show quasi-linear relation with height of vertical poles. As black absorber replaced AI-plate in bottom surface, double bounce in vertical pole decreased. It is observed that not all oyster farms are characterized by double bounced scattering in AIRSAR data. The image intensity of the double bounce dominant oyster farm was investigated with respect to that of oyster farm dominated by single bounce in JERS-l SAR data. The image intensity model results in a correlation coefficient (R2 ) of 0.78 in double bounce dominant area while that of 0.54 in single bouncing dominant area. This shows that double bounce dominant area should be selected for water height measurement using In8AR technique.

  • Sargassum fulvellum (Turner) C. Agardh, an edible brown alga is farmed commercially by sexual reproduction and vegetative regeneration. Investigations were made on the phenology, abundance and maturity of reproductive structures in mature fronds, egg release and young germling development under different light conditions (20, 50, 80 and $100{\mu}mol/m^2/s$) and temperatures (5, 10, 15, 20 and $25^{\circ}C$). Monthly sampling was carried out by SCUBA diving at Chungsando on the southwestern coast of Korea from September 2002 to August 2003. The Maximum length of thalli was $104.6{\pm}20.7{\cal}cm$ in March 2003 when the water temperature was $9.0^{\circ}C$ and minimum was $0.8{\pm}0.5{\cal}cm$ in June when the water temperature was $19.5^{\circ}C$. Receptacle formation was observed from February to April. The peak period of egg release for this alga was in April when the water temperature was about $10^{\circ}C$ in nature. In the culture regimes of temperature and irradiance, the egg release of the excised female receptacle was highly affected by temperature. The maximum rate of egg release was $96.7{\pm}5.8{\%}$ under $20^{\circ}C$ and $80{\mu}mol/m^2/s$. The maximum length of young germlings was $3.9{\pm}0.2{\cal}mm$ after 35 days culture under $15^{\circ}C$ and $80{\mu}mol/m^2/s$.

  • Occupying the center of architecture, design, painting and culture, minimalism is aesthetics of essence that reflects modern age but transcends age at the same time. Pursuing minimalist trend like this and covering the range of furniture, interior and architecture, total designer Antonio Citterio is developing minimalist designs of his own. Called one of the 3 greatest furniture designers in the world today, he leads the trend and enjoys high reputation as a world-renowned interior designer and architect. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze and integrate minimalist descriptive characteristics which appeared in interior space of Citterio who pursues minimalist design. As a study method, this study reorganized minimalism from methodological perspective, drew out expressive characteristics of minimalist interior spaces unique to Citterio based on background and influence of Citterio's design and, centering on this frame of analysis, analyzed and integrated interior spaces he designed. The results of this study are as follows; first, in order to overcome problems that can become monotonous in a minimalist space, Citterio provides spatial experiences to feel visual and spatial variations using the ramp and bridge. Second, he created various senses of space with visual and spatial expansion using transparency in the walls made of glass. Third, with linear expressions, he designed modern spaces with beauty of proportion and balance through contrast and emphasis. Fourth, he made constructive expression through exposure of structures or stairs in the space. Fifth, he created sophisticated atmosphere with contrast between natural and artificial materials and emphasis of material properties. Sixth, his design also shows the characteristic of using furniture as the role of adjusting overall atmosphere of interior space, not as separated parts from it. The author hopes that above results of this study will provide new implications for the development of domestic interior design.

  • The appearance of a rivulet at the upper surface of a stay cable is responsible for rain-wind-induced vibration (RWIV) of cables of cable-stayed bridges. However, the formation mechanism of the upper rivulet and its aerodynamic effects on the stay cable has not been fully understood. Large eddy simulation (LES) method is used to investigate flow around and aerodynamics of a circular cylinder with an upper rivulet at a Reynolds number of 140,000. Results show that the mean lift coefficients of the circular cylinder experience three distinct stages, zero-lift stage, positive-lift stage and negative-lift stage as the rivulet located at various positions. Both pressure-induced and friction-induced aerodynamic forces on the upper rivulet are helpful for its appearance on the upside of the stay cable. The friction-induced aerodynamic forces, which have not been considered in the previous theoretical models, may not be neglected in modeling the RWIV. In positive-lift stage, the shear layer separated from the upper rivulet can reattach on the surface of the cylinder and form separation bubbles, which result in a high non-zero mean lift of the cylinder and potentially induces the occurrence of RWIV. The separation bubbles are intrinsically unsteady flow phenomena. A serial of small eddies first appears in the laminar shear layer separated from the upper rivulet, which then coalesces and reattaches on the side surface of the cylinder and eventually sheds into the wake.

  • Structural design has an imperative role in deciding the failure possibility of a Reinforced Concrete (RC) structure. Recent research works achieved the goal of predicting the structural failure of the RC structure with the assistance of machine learning techniques. Previously, the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) has been trained supported by Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) to classify RC structures with reasonable accuracy. Though, keeping in mind the sensitivity in predicting the structural failure, more accurate models are still absent in the context of Machine Learning. Since the efficiency of multi-objective optimization over single objective optimization techniques is well established. Thus, the motivation of the current work is to employ a Multi-objective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA) to train the Neural Network (NN) based model. In the present work, the NN has been trained with MOGA to minimize the Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) and Maximum Error (ME) toward optimizing the weight vector of the NN. The model has been tested by using a dataset consisting of 150 RC structure buildings. The proposed NN-MOGA based model has been compared with Multi-layer perceptron-feed-forward network (MLP-FFN) and NN-PSO based models in terms of several performance metrics. Experimental results suggested that the NN-MOGA has outperformed other existing well known classifiers with a reasonable improvement over them. Meanwhile, the proposed NN-MOGA achieved the superior accuracy of 93.33% and F-measure of 94.44%, which is superior to the other classifiers in the present study.

  • We believe that science experiments in a laboratory are essential for science education. Scientific experiments begin with situations set by selecting and locating tools and reagents. and by proper experimental behavior, and thereafter situations are changed by natural laws and intermediate experimental behavior. While scientists and students do experiments, they build a cognitive model internally, do causal reasoning on the model to derive system behavior, and then learn scientific truth. We suggest not only a representation method for a 2-dimentional model and for ontological entities necessary in causal reasoning, but also an inferencing method to derive behavior. Chemistry experiments are chosen for the implementation. For the ontological entities, we consider experimental tools, reagents and their heirarchical structures, physics and chemistry natural laws, and functional abstraction knowledge. In order to show the usefulness of our methods, we have developed a program, called ACUArtificial Chemistry Laboratory), which provides an experiment environment where students can do non-predetermined experiments, and shows experiment려 system behavior similar to what happens in the same situation in a real world and descriptions about why it happens.

  • Tricholoma matsutake, an ectomycorrhiza that has mutual relationships with the rootlet of Pinus denisflora, forms a fruiting body that serves as a valuable food in Asia. However, the artificial culture of this fungus has not been successful. Soil fungi, including T. matsutake, coexist with many other microorganisms and plants; therefore, complex microbial communities have an influence on the fruiting body formation of T. matsutake. Here, we report on the structures of fungal communities associated with the fairy ring of T. matsutake through the pyrosequencing method. Soil samples were collected inside the fairy ring zone, in the fairy ring zone, and outside the fairy ring zone. A total of 37,125 sequencing reads were obtained and 728 to 1,962 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were observed in the sampling zones. The fairy ring zone had the lowest OTUs and the lowest fungal diversity of all sampling zones. The number of OTUs and fungal taxa inside and outside the fairy ring zone was, respectively, about 2 times and 1.5 times higher than the fairy ring. Taxonomic analysis showed that each sampling zone has different fungal communities. In particular, out of 209 genera total, 6 genera in the fairy ring zone, such as Hemimycena, were uniquely present and 31 genera, such as Mycena, Boletopsis, and Repetophragma, were specifically absent. The results of metagenomic analysis based on the pyrosequencing indicate a decrease of fungal communities in the fairy ring zone and changes of fungal communities depending on the fairy ring growth of T. matsutake.

  • Simulation means modeling structures or behaviors of the various objects, and experimenting them on the computer system. And the major approaches are DEVS(Discrete Event Systems Specification). Petri-net or Automata and so on. But, the simulation problems are getting more complex or complicated these days, so that an intelligent agent-based is being studied. In this paper, we are describing an intelligent agent-based simulation tool, which can supports the simulation experiment more efficiently. The significances of our system can be described as follows. First, the system can provide some AI algorithms through the system libraries. Second, the system supports simple method of designing the simulation model, since it's been built under the Finite State Machine (FSM) structure. And finally, the system acts as a simulation framework by supporting user not only the simulation engine, but also user-friendly tools, such as modeler scriptor and simulator. The system mainly consists of main simulation engine, utility tools, and some other assist tools, and it is tested and showed some efficient results in the three different problems.
