The purpose of this study was to investigate the change of length, opening width, and number of openings effecting on topography change around artificial reefs under erosive wave condition. Hydraulic model test was conducted to see sediment transport around the structures and the relation among the installation condition of the artificial reefs, generated velocity, wave deformation, and topographic change was reviewed. Experimental results show that the sediment transport rate was reduced; however, the scour around the structures was increased under the condition of having a single opening compared to the structures having a plurality of openings which shows inversely proportional to the size of Lr/W.
The relationship between night cooling rate and meteorological elements was investigated over the past five years (2016-2020), using weather data from the new (Daegu(143)) and old (Shinam(860)) Daegu Regional Meteorological Agency located in the suburban and urban regions, respectively. There was a correlation between the total daily amount of solar radiation (Stot) and the night cooling rate in the both regions. However, a higher correlation was observed at the new Daegu Regional Meteorological Agency station (Daegu(143)). In particular, data from the new Daegu Regional Meteorological Administration's observatory, which experiences a low thermal storage effect caused by artificial structures, showed a higher correlation between nighttime cooling and weather factors. The reason for this is that the lesser the heat storage effect caused by the artificial structures, the better the effect of surface radiation cooling on temperature reduction. These findings confirm that the correlation between night cooling and weather factors can be used to assess the impact of artificial structures in cities.
Metaheuristic algorithms in general make use of uniform random numbers in their search for optimum designs. Levy Flight (LF) is a random walk consisting of a series of consecutive random steps. The use of LF instead of uniform random numbers improves the performance of metaheuristic algorithms. In this study, three discrete optimum design algorithms are developed for steel skeletal structures each of which is based on one of the recent metaheuristic algorithms. These are biogeography-based optimization (BBO), brain storm optimization (BSO), and artificial bee colony optimization (ABC) algorithms. The optimum design problem of steel skeletal structures is formulated considering LRFD-AISC code provisions and W-sections for frames members and pipe sections for truss members are selected from available section lists. The minimum weight of steel structures is taken as the objective function. The number of steel skeletal structures is designed by using the algorithms developed and effect of LF is investigated. It is noticed that use of LF results in up to 14% lighter optimum structures.

For seismic resistant design of critical structures, a dynamic analysis, either response spectrum or time history is frequently required. Owing to the lack of recorded data and the randomness of earthquake ground motion that may be experienced by structure in the future, usually it is difficult to obtain recorded data which fit the requirements (site type, epicenteral distance, etc.) well. Therefore, the artificial seismic records are widely used in seismic designs, verification of seismic capacity and seismic assessment of structures. The purpose of this paper is to develop a numerical method using Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and wavelet packet transform in best basis method which is presented for the decomposition of artificial earthquake records consistent with any arbitrarily specified target response spectra requirements. The ground motion has been modeled as a non-stationary process using wavelet packet. This study shows that the procedure using ANN-based models and wavelet packets in best-basis method are applicable to generate artificial earthquakes compatible with any response spectra. Several numerical examples are given to verify the developed model.
A bridge transportation network supplies products from various source nodes to destination nodes through bridge structures in a target region. However, recent frequent earthquakes have caused damage to bridge structures, resulting in extreme direct damage to the target area as well as indirect damage to other lifeline structures. Therefore, in this study, a surrogate model-based comprehensive framework to estimate the seismic resilience of bridge transportation networks is proposed. For this purpose, total system travel time (TSTT) is introduced for accurate performance indicator of the bridge transportation network, and an artificial neural network (ANN)-based surrogate model is constructed to reduce traffic analysis time for high-dimensional TSTT computation. The proposed framework includes procedures for constructing an ANN-based surrogate model to accelerate network performance computation, as well as conventional procedures such as direct Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) calculation and bridge restoration calculation. To demonstrate the proposed framework, Pohang bridge transportation network is reconstructed based on geographic information system (GIS) data, and an ANN model is constructed with the damage states of the transportation network and TSTT using the representative earthquake epicenter in the target area. For obtaining the seismic resilience curve of the Pohang region, five epicenters are considered, with earthquake magnitudes 6.0 to 8.0, and the direct and indirect damages of the bridge transportation network are evaluated. Thus, it is concluded that the proposed surrogate model-based framework can efficiently evaluate the seismic resilience of a high-dimensional bridge transportation network, and also it can be used for decision-making to minimize damage.

This study described the stability of riprap, which was examined by a two-dimensional physical model of a scattered riprap submarine breakwater. Artificial reef structures made of scattered riprap are used like artificial intertidal zone structures as waterfront seaside structures. To prevent topography change in such an artificial intertidal zone the energy is reduced at the scattered riprap submarine breakwater by intercepting high waves. The breaking waves are converted into flow on the front surface slope of the submarine breakwater, which follows the upper part of the artificial intertidal zone. Because of this phenomenon of resisting water flow, it is very important to calculate the required weight of the riprap to maintain its stability. The results of a physical model can be abstracted as shown below. First, distribute the wave breaking types occurring on the front surface slope of the submarine breakwater and arrange it in relation to the movement of riprap. Second, using the hydraulic phenomenon that occurs at the depth of the scattered riprap submarine breakwater, propose a calculation formula for the velocity distribution showing the influence on the stability of the riprap. Third, propose and compare values, which can be obtained by experiments and calculations for riprap stability on the front surface of the artificial intertidal zone. Fourth, calculate the required weight for riprap stability.
Localizing damages is an essential task to monitor the health of the structures since they may not be able to operate anymore. Among the damage detection techniques, non-destructive methods are considerably more preferred than destructive methods since damage can be located without affecting the structural integrity. However, these methods have several drawbacks in terms of detecting abilities, time consumption, cost, and hardware or software requirements. Employing artificial intelligence techniques could overcome such issues and could provide a powerful damage detection model if the technique is utilized correctly. In this study, the crack localization in flat and folded plate structures has been conducted by employing a Backpropagated Artificial Neural Network (BPANN). For this purpose, cracks with 18 different dimensions in thin, flat, and folded structures having 150, 300, 450, and 600 folding angle have been modeled and subjected to free vibration analysis by employing the Classical Plate Theory with Finite Element Method. A Four-nodded quadrilateral element having six degrees of freedom has been considered to represent those structures mathematically. The first ten natural frequencies have been obtained regarding healthy and cracked structures. To localize the crack, the ratios of the frequencies of the cracked flat and folded structures to those of healthy ones have been taken into account. Those ratios have been given to BPANN as the input variables, while the crack locations have been considered as the output variables. A total of 500 crack locations have been regarded within the dataset obtained from the results of the free vibration analysis. To build the best intelligent model, a feature search has been conducted for BAPNN regarding activation function, the number of hidden layers, and the number of hidden neurons. Regarding the analysis results, it is concluded that the BPANN is able to localize the cracks with an average accuracy of 95.12%.

In this study, a simple, efficient, user-based program called SCAR was developed for evaluating the sliding and collapse of artificial reefs due to hydrodynamic forces in ocean environments. SCAR was developed by applying Delphi code and a Graphical User Interface (GUI) based on the Morison formula for evaluating and analyzing the stability of artificial reefs. SCAR can be applied widely for design and stability evaluation of fishery structures (such as artificial reefs or other underwater structures) in undergraduate and graduate courses and by experts in the field.

In seismic response analysis of building structures, the input ground accelerations have considerable effect on the nonlinear response characteristics of structures. The characteristics of soil and the locality of the site where those ground motions were recorded affect on the contents of earthquake waves. Therefore, it is difficult to select appropriate input ground motions for seismic response analysis. This study describes a generation of artificial earthquake wave compatible with seismic design spectrum, and also evaluates the seismic response values of multistory reinforced concrete structures by the simulated earthquake motions. The artificial earthquake wave are generated according to the previously recorded earthquake waves in past major earthquake events. The artificial wave have identical phase angles to the recorded earthquake wave, and their overall response spectra are compatible with seismic design spectrum with 5% critical viscous damping. The input ground motions applied to this study have identical elastic acceleration response spectra, but have different phase angles. The purpose of this study is to investigate their validity as input ground motion for nonlinear seismic response analysis. As expected, the response quantifies by simulated earthquake waves present better stable than those by real recording of ground motion. It was concluded that the artificial earthquake waves generated in this paper are applicable as input ground motions for a seismic response analysis of building structures. It was also found that strength of input ground motions for seismic analysis are suitable to be normalize as elastic acceleration spectra.
