On June 14, 2008 (the first experiment) and July 24, 2008 (the second experiment), the shores of the Boseong River and the sandy beaches, Seokgok-myun, Moksadong-myun, Gokseong-gun in Jeollanam Province were investigated and a total of 29 soft-shelled turtle (Tryonyx sinensis) eggs in the natural spawning nest eggs were collected (13 eggs were collected in the first experiment and 16 eggs in the second experiment). The temperatures in the natural spawning nests were $25.9-36.9{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$, the depth of the eggs was $5.2-7.5{\pm}0.5cm$ as the distance of the average $6.4{\pm}0.5cm$. 29 eggs were scattered at least 0.2 cm interval. Artificial incubation of 29 eggs was conducted in artificial nest boxes in thermo-plastic composition of the incubator, and then incubated at $26.5-35.5{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$, and an average constant temperature was $31.2-32.1{\pm}1.0^{\circ}C$. The incubation days ranged from 53 to 55. In case of most turtles, incubation at $31^{\circ}C$ (higher temperatures) generally produces all or mostly females, while incubation at $25^{\circ}C$(cooler temperatures) produces all or mostly males. Exceptionally, in case of genus Trionyx, the sex ratio of female : male of T. sinensis of a freshwater soft-shelled turtle was approximately 1:1, which differs from other genera of turtles and makes T. sinensis Strauch only turtles presently known to lack temperature-dependent sex determination.
Sexual maturity ($L_{50}$), the length at which 50% of fish in a size class are mature, is a key aspect of domestication of new fish species because it guides the procedure for identification of appropriate broodstock size for artificial spawning. In this study, the $L_{50}$ was determined for 1083 Barbus altianalis samples obtained from Lake Edward and the Upper Victoria Nile. Gonads of freshly killed samples were examined macroscopically and verified with standard histological procedures for the maturation stages that were used to determine $L_{50}$. Oocytes and spermatogenic cell sizes were compared for fish obtained from both water bodies. Results indicated that there were no variations in macro gonad features observed for fish from Lake Edward and Upper Victoria Nile. Similarly, there were no significant differences in oocyte sizes (P > 0.05) between the two populations but significant differences in spermatogenic cell sizes were noted (P < 0.05) except for spermatozoa (P > 0.05). This however did not suggest peculiar differences between the two populations for staging the gonads. Consequently, no staging variations were suggested for both populations in determination of $L_{50}$. Sexual maturity was found in the same class size of fork length (FL) 20-24.9 cm and 35-39.9 cm for males and females from both water bodies, respectively. At this FL, however, males were too small, and for good selection of vigor broodstocks for spawning and conservation purposes, they are better picked from class size of 30-34.9 cm FL and above. These findings were crucial for integration of appropriate breeding size in spawning protocol by farmers and fisheries scientists conserving wild B. altianalis populations.
The aim of this study is to observe the reproductive behavior of the marine medaka, Oryzias dancena, and determine the factors of reproductive behavior to provide useful information for improving their artificial reproduction techniques. The reproductive behavior of the marine medaka was observed in laboratory aquaria. Once the experiment began, all of the males chased the females. The males attempted to stimulate the urogenital openings of the females. While chasing a female, a large male would bite a relatively small male's anus. Larger males expelled smaller males with biting, and the defeated males were barred from the female. After the other males were expelled, the remaining male approached and drew alongside the female. The male's dorsal and anal fins covered the female's body. Spawning began after complete covering took place. Spawning of males and females occurred simultaneously. The loadings for 2 factors were calculated. The calculation was restricted to 2 factors because these 2 factors explained about 81% of the total common variance (P<0.05) and the following factors possessed no practical significance. Two movements (biting, expelling) had high positive values for factor one. This factor related a male's defensive behavior to courtship behavior and spawning, and explained 23.1% of the total common variance (P<0.05). The second factor had high positive values for chasing, rejection, covering, and parallel swimming. This factor related a male's courtship behavior and female's defensive behavior to spawning, and explained 59.7% of the total common variance (P<0.05). This research provided basic biological data for the conservation of this species and useful information for improving their artificial reproduction techniques.
The small octopus(Octopus minor), a species in the cephalopod class spawns the fewer eggs compared with its relatives such as Octopus vulgaris and Octopus ocellatus and exerts special efforts in nursing eggs hiding in the deep cave beneath the mud flat. Correspondingly, its embryogenic process had been hardly observed. In this study, we induced the small octopus to spawn its eggs in the artificial spawning tube and to nurse the developing embryos under the periodical observation. The early embryogenic change in the fertilized eggs was appearance of blastodisc on the animal pole at 4 days after spawning. A mass of rudiments of several organs developed in the middle of the yolk sac at 28-th day and it moved gradually toward the animal pole. At 38 days after spawning, two eyes appeared on the head and the trunk with heart developed on the apical part of the yolk sac. At 45-th day of embryonic development, the trunk and head occupied a half of the egg capsule and consequently the yolk sac was reduced to a half of its original size. Two eyes became prominent at the bottom of the trunk with several spots at day 60. Embryonic development was completed at about 80 days after spawning and the arms stuffed the lower half of egg capsule. The young fry squeezed out of the egg capsules with their long and slender arms first and mantles later. Soon after hatching, it swam actively and squirted ink.
The comparative studies Were conducted with respect to the artificial spawning early embryonic development, metamorphosis and growth of two species Meretrix lusoria and Cyclina sinensis collected from Inchon, Anmyon island and Buan areas from 1969 to 1974. The highest rate of artificial spawning of M. lusoria, which treated with a dilute ammoniun hydroxide(4/100-5/100N)-seawater solutions, was $25.0-33.3\%$, whereas in C. sinensis the rate of spawning was lower than that of M, lusoria under the similar experimental conditions$(12.5-19.0\%)$. However, the rate of artificial spawning of C. sinensis increased $40\%$ by repeated thermal stimulation. The rate of artificial fertilization of M. lusoria and C. sinensis showed highest value from those individuals which were treated with 1/1000N $NH_4OH$ solution. Their fertilized eggs, then, showed a normal development in the 1/1000N $NH_4OH$ solution. In the early embryonic development of M. lusoria and C. sinensis, the appearance of each of polar body, trochophore and D-shaped veliger were observed around 50min. 5-6 hours, and 23 hours after artificial fertilization respectively. The larval shell lengths of M. lusoria reached to $109,5{\pm}0.7\mu,\;144.6{\pm}1.3\mu$ and $208.0{\pm}0.0\mu$ around, 1, 11 and 20 days, after fertilization respectively. The larval shell lengths of C. sinensis reached to $110.5{\pm}0.6\mu,\;147.8{\pm}1.7\mu,\;and\;235.0{\pm}0.0\mu$ around 1, 10 ana 20 days, after fertilization respectively. The correlations of relative growth rate between the shell length(L) and sell height(H) found by the following simple formula from D-shaped veliger to metamorphosing stage. H=0.77L+6.82 for M. lusoria H=0.75L+8.50 for C. sinensis.
Tamjin Dam is built in the upper reaches of the Tamjin River which flows through the Janghung-gun and Gangjin-gun of the Jeollanamdo, Korea. In order to map out a preservation strategy of the fish community from dam construction, We studied the distribution of fish distribution and changes of the habitat environment. we found 49 fish species inhabiting in the downstream and upstream of the Tamjin Dam. Among them, migratory fish were two species sweet smelt, Plecoglossus altivelis and freshwater eel, Anguilla japonica. The Coreoperca kawamebari which designated as a species to be protected by The Ministry of Environment of Korea was also observed. After the dam construction, reservoir would be filled with water and running water system will change to standing water system. Then the habitat and spawning space for mountain torrent fish will be reduced and the migration of migratory fish to upstream will be blocked. Through our study, we proposed several ways to protect fish community. In order to preserve the reduced habitat and spawning area of mountain torrent fish, a fishway has been diagnosed to be built in the shallow reservoir in the entrance of the upriver. The establishment of artificial spawning ground on the riverside has been recommended. In addition, We propose a creation of a shelter for fresh water eel, Anguilla japonica in areas where the depth of the water is about l0m by laying rocks. Since it is difficult for a spawning ground to be formed naturally in the reservoir due to the year-round changes in water level, We suggested a floating spawning facility using an artificial fixture. In the downstream of the dam, a waterway-style habitat and spawning ground in the river and increasing the diversity and abundance of fish fauna in the Tamjin River. A low-cost and highly efficient operational fishway has been recommended so that migratory fish such as Plecoglossus altivelis (sweetfish) can migrate from the lower reaches to the upper reaches of the river.
To establish a database for artificial seed production of stone flounder Kareius bicoloratus, experiments were conducted to study the characteristics of spawning and fecundity of this species. Broodstocks were captured in the area of Gyeokryeolbiyeoldo, Chungnam, Korea in October 2003 and induced to natural spawning. The broodstock consisted of 12 females (34.5~51.0 cm total length and 540~2,200 g body weight) and 23 males (29.0~38.0 cm total length and 310~680 g body weight). Gonad development began in December and proceeded in the direction of the tail; measurements were made with the naked eye. The tank-held broodstock were reared for 3 months before spawning, which continued for 77 days from January 9 to March 27, 2004. Daylength during the spawning was recorded at the yearly shortest of 9.8~12.1 hours and the water temperature was maintained at $8.4{\sim}12.2^{\circ}C$. The total fecundity was 19,844,000 individuals, among which 15,433,000 individuals (77.8%) were produced during the mid-spawning period. The average bloating rate, egg-fertilization rate and hatching rate of the total number spawned reached 50.4%, 58.5% and 55.6%, respectively, and 93.8% of the hatched fry appeared normal. The number of total eggs in absolute fecundity per total length was proportional to both lengths, as was the number of total eggs in relative fecundity per total length. The number of total eggs in absolute fecundity per body weight was proportional to body weight as was the number in relative fecundity per body weight except that the number in relative fecundity per gram decreased after a peak in increased body weight at a certain point.

This study was performed to describe the effect of water temperature, salinity and density on the eggs development of the hard clam, Meretrix petechialis. Eggs of Meretrix petechialis were turned out to be demersal isolated eggs of $82.3-86.1{\mu}m$ in an average diameter after spawning. The hatching rate of D-shaped larvae by elapsed time after spawning was the highest in fertilization immediately after spawning and distinguished decrease from 1 hour of spawning. The optimum water temperature for development of D-shaped larvae from fertilization was ranged between $25^{\circ}C$ to $27^{\circ}C$. However, D-shaped larvae was not developed at $33^{\circ}C$ of water temperature. The required time from fertilization to D-shaped larvae were 37.3 hours in $20^{\circ}C$, 20.8 hours in $25^{\circ}C$, and 15.3 hours in $30^{\circ}C$. Biological minimum temperature for the egg development was estimated to be $12.4^{\circ}C$ in average. The range of salinity for the development of eggs were 20.0-37.5 psu, optimum range was estimated to be 27.5-32.5 psu.
Spawning induction and early growth of the sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus intermedius were studied with the purpose of artificial seedling production. Gonadosomatic index(GSI) of the sea urchin showed the highest value in October, and rapidly decreased in December. It means that October and November is the peak of spawning season of the sea urchin in the latitude. Spawning induction by injection of potassium chloride solution in October has showed 44.0~100.0% reaction rate, and were produced 6,300$\times$10$^4$ eggs. Spawned eggs have shown the fertilization rate of 92.3~98.2% and the hatching rate of 78.2~87.0%. The metamorphosis of larvae after hatching in the seawater temperature of 13.7~17.1$^{\circ}C$ resulted in early eight-armed larvae in 13 days and late eight-armed larvae in 20 days. The collection of progenies was possible in 24~25 days after hatching and collection rate was 18.5~26.1% (mean 22.3%). Test diameter immediately after collection had a mean 350 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Survival rate and test diameter of juvenile sea urchin after collection were 58.5%, 1.32 mm in 30 days, 27.7%, 3.82 mm in 92 days and 15.6%, 11.70 mm in 181 days, respectively.
In order to obtain the basic biological data for artificial seedling production of sea cucumber, Stichopus japonicus, the influence of water temperature and air dry for spawning induction, egg development and larvae rearing was investigated during the period from April, 1995 through September, 1995. Spawning induction rate by the water temperature was 6.0~17.5% and air dry was responsed 1.4~4.0%. Number of eggs spawned of Stichopus japonicus were $50~500\times10^4$ individuals, the fertilization and hatching rate were ranged 84.0~96.0%, 71.4~84.6% respectively. The fertilized egg of Stichopus japonicus appeared mean diameter of $154{\mu}m$. At a constant water temperature of $23^{circ)C$, it become 4 tell stage from fertilization after 2 hours 10 minutes, hatching larvae after 14 hours half, auricularia larvae after 3 days, doliolaria larvare after 11 days and pentactula larvae after 15 days ready for settlement. The suitable food in the larvae reared for 17 days after fertilization were shown the best growth and survival in the larvae food of Chaetoceros calcitrans. Optimum density for larvae rearing were maintained of the larval density lower than 2 individuals/ml.
