  • In this study, changes in the volatile compounds of Artemisia capillaris essential oil were investigated under six different storage conditions for 6 months. The essential oil was collected by steam distillation and analyzed by a gas chromatography-mass selective detector (GC-MSD). Seventy-five volatile compounds were identified from the fresh essential oil of Artemisia capillaris. During storage, the total levels of aldehydes, alcohols, and ketones slightly decreased and the level of hydrocarbons greatly decreased; the total level of esters also decreased in the essential oil. Notably, the levels of carvacrol, eugenol, myrcene, 1,8-cineole, caryophyllene, coumarin, ${\alpha}-thujone$, ${\beta}-thujone$, borneol, and ${\gamma}-terpinene$, known as antioxidants and antimicrobial agents, decreased during storage. Finally, aerobic storage conditions caused greater reductions in some compounds even at low temperatures.

  • Objective : The aim of this work is to investigate the antibacterial activity of the essential oil obtained from Artemisia capillaris (A. capillaris), as the development of microbial resistance to antibiotics make it necessary to constantly look for new and active compounds effective against pathogenic bacteria. Methods : The crushed materials of A. capillaris (1 kg) were subjected to steam distillation for 3 h, using a modified Clevenger type apparatus in order to obtain essential oil. Diethyl ether was the extracting solvent kept at 25°.... The essential oil was analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The essential oil and the composition were tested for antimicrobial activities against 15 different genera of oral bacteria. Results and Conclusion : The components of the essential oil identified were: β-pinene (9.36%), camphor (3.32%), 1,8cineole (4.38%), artemisia alcohol (3.32%), β-caryophyllene (11.08%), γ-cadinene (4.23%), and capillene (32.74%). The essential oil of A. capillaris exhibited considerable inhibitory effects against all oral bacteria tested, while their major components demonstrated various degrees of growth inhibition.

  • This expriment was carried out to get basic information on composition and yield of aromatic constituents in leaves of four medicinal plants, Angelica tenuissima, Chrysanthemum zawadskii. ssp. latilobum, Artemisia iwayomogi and Artemisia capillaris. Volatile aromatic constituents, 28 compounds in Angelica tenuissima were identified and 19 compounds were indentified in Chrysanthemum zawadskii ssp. latilobum. Volatile aromatic constituents, 23 compounds in Artemisia iwayomogi and Artemisia capillaris were identified. Major volatile aromatic consitiuents analyzed by GC/MS in four plants were $\alpha$-pinene, camphene, sabinene, cis-2-hexanol, and camphor etc. Content of essential oils in Angelica tenuissima, Chrysanthemum zawadskii ssp. latilobum, Artemisia iwayomogi and Artemisia capillaris were 0.014, 0.275, 0.785, and 0.452%, respectively. As a result, it was suggested that a medicinal plant, Artemisia iwayomogi, was worthy of using as a useful material of perfume.

국내의 2개 지역에서 수집한 더위지기에서 분리한 정유에서 60종의 성분을 동정하였으며, 그중 한 시료에서는 iso-pinocamphone(31.64%), 1,8-cineole(21.55%), ${\beta}-pinene$(4.46%), pinocarvone(3.72%), myrtenal(3.42%) 및 trans-pinocarvel(3.14%)이 주요 구성성분이었으나 다른 시료에서는 camphor(26.99%), 1,8-cineole(11.02%), ${\alpha}-terpineol$(7.63%), borneol(4.10%), camphene(3.97%) 및 artemisia ketone(3.84%)이 주요 구성성분이었다.

  • Plant essential oils are used in products such as fragrances and cosmetics due to their individual aromatic characteristics. Currently, essential oils are not only used in cosmetics but also in pharmaceutical products with anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-parasitic, insecticidal, anti-cancer, neuroprotective, psychophysiological, or anti-aging effects. Despite their pharmaceutical properties, some studies reported cytotoxic effects in high doses. Therefore, for pharmaceutical purposes, the margin of safety of essential oils needs to be examined. Herein, we evaluated the IC50 of 10 essential oil from Korean native plants: Juniperus chinensis L. var. sargentii Henry, Citrus natsudaidai Hayata, Citrus reticulata Blanco, Citrus unshiu (Yu. Tanaka ex Swingle) Marcow, Artemisia capillaris Thunb, Aster glehnii F. Schmidt, Juniperus chinensis L, Zanthoxylum schinifolium Siebold & Zucc, Zanthoxylum piperitum (L.) D, and Cinnamomum loureirii. In addition, gene regulation of the cell-cycle gene and apoptosis marker CASP3 was examined at the IC50 level. The purpose of this study was to describe the toxic concentrations of essential oils extracted from Korean native plants, thereby providing toxic concentration guidelines for inclusion in a toxicity database and in the application of plant essential oils in various fields.
