An Improved Stereovision Scheme Using Single Camera and a Composite Lens Array

  • We propose an improved stereovision scheme using a composite lens array and single camera. The use of a composite lens array makes it possible to construct a compact stereovision system and to improve the quality of the results by adopting image processing method. The principle of the proposed system is explained and the simulation and the experimental results are also presented.

A Method for Extracting Shape and Position of an Object using Partial M-array

  • This paper describes a new method for object extraction necessary for image tracking systems. The extraction method which this paper proposes here is that an M-array is set between a camera and the object and the obtained image including the object and M-array is pro-cessed for extracting the object. The image processing utilizes a characteristic of M-array which is robust to noise. When an M-array is overlapped on the object in background image, the object woud have a part of M-array, which is detected by use of partial correlation between the mosaic image of M-array and the standard M-array. Thus the shape and position of the object are extracted by extracting a common domain of width of high correlation value. Experiments are carried out by using an actual photo of Kumamoto city taken from an airplane as background, and by use of a rectangular and circular object. The results of experiment show a wide application of this method for practical image tracking systems.

Development of a Coded-aperture Gamma Camera for Monitoring of Radioactive Materials (방사성 물질 감시를 위한 부호화 구경 감마카메라 개발)

  • A coded-aperture gamma camera was developed to increase the sensitivity of a pin hole camera made with a pixellated CsI(Tl) scintillator and a position-sensitive photomultiplier tube. The modified round-hole uniformly redundant array of pixel size $13{\times}11$ was chosen as a coded mask considering the detector spatial resolution. The performance of the coded-aperture camera was compared with the pin hole camera using various forms of Tc-99m source to see the improvement of signal-to-noise ratio or the improvement of the sensitivity. The image quality is much improved despite of a slight degradation of the spatial resolution. Though the camera and the test were made for low energy case, but the concept of the coded-aperture gamma camera could be effectively used for the radioactive environmental monitoring and other applications.

Design of Gamma Camera with Diverging Collimator for Spatial Resolution Improvement (공간분해능 향상을 위한 확산형 콜리메이터 기반의 감마카메라 설계)

  • Diverging collimators is used to obtain reduced images of an object, or to detect a wide filed-of-view (FOV) using a small gamma camera. In the gamma camera using the diverging collimators, the block scintillator, and the pixel scintillator array, gamma rays are obliquely incident on the scintillator surface when the source is located the periphery of the FOV. Therefore, the spatial resolution is reduced because it is obliquely detected in depth direction. In this study, we designed a novel system to improve the spatial resolution in the periphery of the FOV. Using a tapered crystal array to configure the scintillation pixels to coincide with the angle of the collimator's hole allows imaging to one scintillation pixel location, even if events occur to different depths. That is, even if is detected at various points in the diagonal direction, the gamma rays interact with one crystal pixel, so resolution does not degrade. The resolution of the block scintillator and the tapered crystal array was compared and evaluated through Geant4 Application for Tomographic Emission (GATE) simulation. The spatial resolution of the obtained image was 4.05 mm in the block scintillator and 2.97 mm in the tapered crystal array. There was a 26.67% spatial resolution improvement in the tapered crystal array compared to the block scintillation.

The Determination of Multiplexing-Diversity Transition Mode in the Visual-MIMO System (Visual-MIMO 시스템에서의 다중화-다이버시티 모드 전환 결정)

  • Recently, researches about the communication between LED array and the camera (alias 'Visual-MIMO'), have been actively conducted, and the application to the vehicle and a smart phone is expected to be maximized. Since the bit error may occur if the ISI is severe in a LED array, it is necessary to switch from the multiplexing to the diversity mode. In this paper, according to the use or not of a reference array pattern, a method for determining the transition time to the diversity mode is suggested and verified. When using the reference pattern, it determines the transition time to the diversity mode from the multiplexing using the brightness information of the received image. If the reference array pattern is not used, the size of LED array compared to the entire image according to the distance is used and the size of the LED array at the distance of a severe ISI may be used for the determination of transition time to the diversity. Finally, the proposed method is verified through the simulation and hardware experiments as well as by analyzing the performance in accordance with the ISI level and the distance.

Efficient Depth Map Generation for Various Stereo Camera Arrangements (다양한 스테레오 카메라 배열을 위한 효율적인 깊이 지도 생성 방법)

  • In this paper, we propose a direct depth map acquisition method for the convergence camera array as well as the parallel camera array. The conventional methods perform image rectification to reduce complexity and improve accuarcy. However, image rectification may lead to unwanted consequences for the convergence camera array. Thus, the proposed method excludes image rectification and directly extracts depth values using the epipolar constraint. In order to acquire a more accurate depth map, occlusion detection and handling processes are added. Reasonable depth values are assigned to the obtained occlusion region by the distance and color differences from neighboring pixels. Experimental results show that the proposed method has fewer limitations than the conventional methods and generates more accurate depth maps stably.

  • In a robot/vision system, the vision sensor, typically a CCD array sensor, is mounted on the robot hand. The problem of determining the relationship between the camera frame and the robot hand frame is refered to as the hand-eye calibration. In the literature, various methods have been suggested to calibrate camera and for sensor registration. Recently, one-step approach which combines camera calibration and sensor registration is suggested by Horaud & Dornaika. In this approach, camera extrinsic parameters are not need to be determined at all configurations of robot. In this paper, by modifying the camera model and including the lens distortion effect in the perspective transformation matrix, a new one-step approach is proposed in the hand-eye calibration.

A Study of the Scene-based NUC Using Image-patch Homogeneity for an Airborne Focal-plane-array IR Camera (영상 패치 균질도를 이용한 항공 탑재 초점면배열 중적외선 카메라 영상 기반 불균일 보정 기법 연구)

  • The detector of a focal-plane-array mid-wave infrared (MWIR) camera has different response characteristics for each detector pixel, resulting in nonuniformity between detector pixels. In addition, image nonuniformity occurs due to heat generation inside the camera during operation. To solve this problem, in the process of camera manufacturing it is common to use a gain-and-offset table generated from a blackbody to correct the difference between detector pixels. One method of correcting nonuniformity due to internal heat generation during the operation of the camera generates a new offset value based on input frame images. This paper proposes a technique for dividing an input image into block image patches and generating offset values using only homogeneous patches, to correct the nonuniformity that occurs during camera operation. The proposed technique may not only generate a nonuniformity-correction offset that can prevent motion marks due to camera-gaze movement of the acquired image, but may also improve nonuniformity-correction performance with a small number of input images. Experimental results show that distortion such as flow marks does not occur, and good correction performance can be confirmed even with half the number of input images or fewer, compared to the traditional method.

Microphone Array Design for Noise Source Imaging (소음원 영상화를 위한 마이크로폰 배열 설계)

  • This paper describes 3-dimensional volume array of 4 microphones including a reference microphone which is capable of imaging wideband noise source position in 2-dimensional image plane. The cross correlation function and corresponding imaging function between a reference microphone and other microphone, are derived as a function of noise source position. The magnitude of the imaging function gives noise source mapping in image plane. Since the image plane is selective from a rectangular and a cylindrical plane, noise source position information such as range and bearing relative to the array is identified very much easily. Simulation results for typical source configurations confirms the applicability of the proposed array in noise control field.

  • Recently, speaker localizing estimation technique has been rising in teleconference systems. In this system, it is recognized speaker location using microphone array and camera is directed to speaker location automatically. In this paper, it was described to be able to enhance the speech qualify through microphone array, decrease computational loads using IIR filter as inverse filter, and confirmed to implement hardware using DSP processor.
