compounds (VOCs) were selected for assessment of VOCs contamination in some urban runoff and groundwater samples in Seoul. They included 3 aromatic hydrocarbons, 13 alkyl benzenes, 1 ether, 26 halogenated alkanes, 10 halogenated alkenes, and 9 halogenated aromatics. The levels of VOCs in urban runoff and groundwater were measured for samples collected in March 2000, June 2000 and November 2000 in Seoul City. A total of 78 samples (44 run-off water, 27 groundwater, and 7 samples from 4 urban wastewater treatment plants in Seoul) were collected and analysed by GC-MS with purge and trap. After examination of the runoff, it was concluded that alkyl benzenes and aromatic hydrocarbons were organic compounds which were significantly impacted by traffic flows in Seoul. Of 62 VOCs, only 11 VOCs were not detected in runoff samples, while 14 VOCs were detected in 27 groundwater samples. The toluene content in the runoff was extremely variable from 0.1ppb to 29,310ppb, depending on the different sampling sites. The concentrations of xylene ranged between 0.07ppb and 2970ppb in the runoff. The concentrations ranged from 0.05ppb to 33.0ppb for benzene, 0.05ppb to 960ppb for ethylbenzene, 0.08ppb to 20ppb for trichloromethane (chloroform) , 0.03ppb to 4.30ppb for trichloroethylene(TCE) and 0.1ppb to 50ppb for 1,1,2-trichloroethane. From the preliminary study of groundwater from some wells in Seoul, the most frequently detected VOCs are djchlorornethane(methylene chloride), trichloromethane(chloroform) and toluene. Most of aromatic hydrocarbons, alkyl benzenes and other solvents generally lower than detection limits.
To elucidate the relationship of the Quality of aromatic tobacco to their chemical constituents, certain chemical components and leaf Quality by price were compared among leaves produced, 1) under 4 different light intensities during maturing stage in field, 2) under 4 different temperature of 20$^{\circ}C$. 25$^{\circ}C$. 30$^{\circ}C$ and control of l8-22-28$^{\circ}C$ in phytotron. As the light intensity decreased chlorophyll content of harvested leaves increased, but specific leaf weight and Quality of cured leaves lowered. The content of sugar. pet. ether exts. and volatile organic acids decreased, but total nitrogen, nicotine, ash and pH increased as the .light intensity decreased. As the growth temperature increased days to flower was shortened and the growth was decreased without significant difference in leaf Quality. With higher growth temperature the content of nitrogen, ash and pH increased, but sugar decreased with no difference in pet. ether exts., volatile organic acids and volatile neutral content. Several Quality indices were disscussed for the Quality evaluation of aromatic leaves for two groups, respectively.
Normally cultured, harvested and yellowed leaves of aromatic tobacco variety. KA 101 were sun-cured under conventional polyethylene film house, air-cured in burley curing barn, and bulk-cured at three temperatures of 40$^{\circ}C$, 50$^{\circ}C$ and 60$^{\circ}C$. respectively, to investigate the effects of curing conditions on quality and chemical properties of leaf tobacco. Air-cured leaves had the poorest quality by price with little difference between that of sun-cured and three bulk-cured ones. Air-cured leaves were higher in ammonia nitrogen, protein nitrogen, total nitrogen, ash content and pH, but lower in sugar content when it compared with those of sun-cured and three bulk-cured ones. The curing variables tested did not affect the content of pet. ether ext. and volatile organic acids. The content of pet. ether ext., volatile organic acids, and most of volatile neutrals tended to decrease or not to change as the bulk-curing temperature increased. A quality index, (volatile organic acids, mg/l00g+% pet. ether ext.) / %(ash+pH) x 10, was found to be most accurate and easy to apply for the quality evaluation of aromatic tobaccos.

Polyurethanes, synthesized by polyester polyols and aliphatic or aromatic diisocyanates for a crease resist finishing agent, were prepared by two-step reactions, that is, prepolymer synthesis and chain extension. The structures of synthesized polyurethanes were confirmed by the measurement of FT-IR and $^1H$-NMR spectrometer. The number average molecular weight ($\bar{M}_n$) and the weight average molecular weight ($\bar{M}_w$) of the polyurethane with aromatic diisocyanate (MDI) were higher than those of the synthesized polyurethanes with aliphatic diisocyanate (HDI, $H_{12}MDI$). The glass transition temperatures ($T_g$) of soft segments in polyurethanes with MDI, HDI, $H_{12}MDI$ were -25,-42 and -50$^{circ}C$, respectively. In the polyurethanes obtained by two-step reaction, thermal stability and tensile strength increased with increasing hard segment contents, whereas elongation at break decreased with increasing hard segment contents.
The enzymatic isolation of residual lignins obtained from spruce and beech pulps (obtained by sulfite, kraft, ASAM and soda/AQ/MeOH pulping processes) and their characterization was described in previous publications. Here, the residual lignins have been submitted to potassium permanganate oxidation (KMnO4 degradation), and 9 aromatic carboxylic acids (3 of them are dimeric) were identified after methylation with diazomethane by GC/MS. The analytical challenge during qantification by the internal standard methods was the partly high protein content of the samples, which resulted in elevated anisic acid yields in the degradation mixture of sulfite residual lignins. The results are compared with the KMnO4 degradation of the corresponding MWLs and discussed in terms of S/G ratios and degrees of condensation. The latter was calculated as a quotient between the aromatic carboxylic acids derived from condensed and non-condensed lignin structures. Typical degradation patterns for the various processes have been observed. Among other parameter, the relative compositions between iso-hemipinic acid (which is for condensation in pos. 5 of the aromatic ring) and meta-hemipinic acid and 3,4,5-trimethoxyphthalic acid (both are for condensation in pos. 6 of the aromatic ring) was found to be process specific. Kraft and soda/AQ/MeOH residual lignins yielded higher amounts of iso-hemipinic acid. In contrast, the relative yields of meta-hemipinic acid and 3,4,5-trimethoxyphthalic acid (the latter in beech lignins) are higher in sulfite and particularly in ASAM residual lignin. In case of beech residual lignins the amount of acids originated from non-condensed syringyl type lignin units was surprisingly high. The condensation degree of residual lignins was shown to be generally higher than that of MWLs. This was especially true for the G units. ASAM residual lignin exhibited very high S/G ratios and degrees of polymerization. Causality between condensation degree and total yield of degradation products was demonstrated.

Microcapsules containing 2,4,4'-trichloro-2-hydroxydiphenyl ether (DP) and perfumes were prepared by the coacervation using poly (vinyl alcohol) and crosslinking agents. Internal phase content, percent releasing of core materials, antimicrobial activities of microcapsules and fabrics treated with them were investigated. The internal content of microcapsules containing perfumes and DP are increased with increasing perfumes. The internal content of cacharia in the microcapsue was higher than that of lemon and its maimum value was 93%. The microcapsules containing perfumes and DP did not release cacharia and lemon at roonl temperature. But the amount of perfumes released from microcapsules were increased with temperature and time of microcapsules containing DP and perfumes showed 100% reduction percentage of bacteria. The size of obstruction of fabrics treated with microcapsule containing DP and perfumes were increased with DP content in microcapsules.
Poly(3-hydroxy-5-phenylvalerate) [P(3HPV)] was efficiently accumulated from 5-phenylvalerate (5PV) in Pseudomonas putida BM01 in a mineral salts medium containing butyric acid (BA) as the cosubstrate. A nove aromatic copolyester, poly(5 mol% 3-hydroxy-4-phenylbutyrate-co- 95 mol% 3-hydroxy-6-phenylhexanoate) [P(3HPB-co-3HPC)] was also synthesized from 6-phenylhexanoate (6PC) plus Ba. The two aromatic polymers, P(3HPV) and P(3HPB-co-3HPC), were found to be amorphous and showed different glass-transition temperatures at $15^{\circ}C$ and $10^{\circ}C$, respectively. When the bacterium was grown ina medium containing 20 mM 5PV as the sole carbon source for 140 h, 0.4 g/l of dry cells was obtained in a flask cultivation and 20 wt% of P(3HPV) homopolymer was accumulated in the cells. However, when it was grown with a mixture of 2 mM 5PV and 50 mM BA for 40 h, the yield of dry biomass was increased up to 2.5 g/l and the content of P(3HPV) in the dry cells was optimally 56 wt%. This efficient production of P(3HPV) homopolymer from the mixed substrate was feasible because BA only supported cell growth and did not induce any aliphatic PHA accumulation. The metabolites released into the PHA synthesis medium were analyzed using GC or GC/MS. Two $\beta$-oxidation derivatives, 3-phenylpropionic acid and trans-cinnamic acid, were found in the 5V-grown cell medium and these comprised 55-88 mol% of the 5PV consumed. In the 6PC-grown medium containing Ba, seven ${\beta}$-oxidation and related intermediates were found, which included phenylacetic acid, 4-phenylbutyric acid, cis-4-phenyl-2-butenoic acid, trans-4-phenyl-3-butenoic acid, trans-4-phenyl-2-butenoic acid, 3-hydroxy-4-phenylbutyric acid, and 3-hydroxy-6-phenylhexanoic acid. Accordingly, based on the metabolite analysis, PHA synthesis pathways from the two aromatic carbon sources are suggested.
The experiment was carried out to find aromatic constituent composition of Codonopsis lanceolata species grown in the native(Mt. lrwol, Youngyang, Kyungpuk Province) and the cultivated(Andong, Kyungpuk Province) areas from 1994 to 1995. The results were as follows : Air temperature and soil temperature at the native area were lower to $2{\sim}3^{\circ}C$, and to $2^{\circ}C$ than the cultivated area. Organic matter contents of plant grown at the native area higher than that of plants at the cultivated area by 4.8%. Crude protein content was higher in plant grown at native area than the plant grown in wild area but in case of crude saponin, plants grown at wild area was higher than that of native area. For inorganic element contents. K content is much higher than in the domesticated area as compared with wild area above ten over. And other elements such as Cu, Mn, Na and Mg were not remarkably different in contents. In the free amino acid compositions, argine was highest compared with other free amino acids, and Arginine content was higher in dometicated area. Recovery yield of essential oil of wild species grown at the cultivated showed 0.005%, but domesticated species was 0.004%. But both species at the native area were the same by 0.004%. Although composition of aromatic constituents in the two areas and species varied, total aromatic constituent was 21 kinds. Most aromatic constituents were aliphatic alcohols such as 1-hexanol, eis-3-hexanol, and trans-2-hexanol occupied by approximately 90% over. But three constituets as amylalcohol, furfuryl acetate, and 2-methoxy-4-vinyl phenol(MVP) were detected only in domesticated species.

Aromatic and aliphatic copolyesters for the dispersing agent were synthesized by two stage reaction, esterification and polycondensation. Copolyesters were blended with PET in the melt state and their thermal and rheological properties were investigated. From GPC analysis Mn's and Mw's of copolyesters were about 30000 and 65000g/mol, respectively. From DSC experiment copolyesters had melting range of $90{\sim}150^{\circ}C$. Copolymer composition was in good agreement with comonomer feed ratio from $^1H$-NMR analysis. Copolyesters and SPA (standard sample) were blended with PET in the melt state. From DSC experiment, copolyesters and SPA were miscible with PET. From the dynamic melt viscosity experiment, melt viscosity of blended sample was increased as the content of aromatic copolyester was increased, while it was decreased as the content of aliphatic and SPA were increased. As for volume resistivity of dry color containing carbon black and copolyesters with dispersing time, aromatic copolyester showed highest value. It was conferred from this result that aromatic copolyester was the best dispersing agent for carbon black in PET resin.
The effect of petroleum resin as a tackifier for polyalphaolefin (APAO) hot melt adhesive on thermal properties, crystallinity and adhesion strength was investigated. The presence of petroleum resin resulted in the melting temperature decrease in APAO/petroleum blend, especially, in APAO with low ethylene content/C$_{5}$ petroleum blend. It was also found that petroleum resin caused the decrease of crystallinity regardless of ethylene content in APAO. The maximum adhesion strength was found to be at 50/50 (APAO/petroleum) composition. $C_{5}$ resin was more effective to increase adhesion strength than $C_{9}$ for APAO with high ethylene content. In addition, it was found that the adhesion strength was improved with the decrease of crystallinity in APAO/petroleum resin hot melts.
