  • This paper is a review of articles selected from Journal of Home economics (1973~1979) with the purpose of studying new direction of home economics in america. Regarding the future of home economics in America. Regarding the future of home economics, the following points were important : 1) Top priorities for future directions in home economics were developed at the 11th Lake Placid Conference and published in "Home Economics New Directions 11" (May 1975). 2) A new definition of home economics by University of Arizona students described the uniqueness of home economics clearly, and in easily understandable terms. 3) A human ecosystem model which depicts human beings existing I interaction with the total environment was found to be a new approch to the concept of home economics. 4) A proposal was made for offering home economics courses to students in professional human service fields. Some of the problems of home economics which need to be solved: 1) The emphasis on specialization in a major field has made home economics just a collection of specialities. 2) The change of the designation "home economics" to other lables by some institutions has brought confusion. 3) Inadequate supply of competent faculty is the cause of inactive home economics research. 4) Teaching sex defined roles is outdated. The above findings give insights to Korean home economics which is faced with a variety of problems in a rapidly changing society.

  • Maxillary protraction is the conventional treatment for growing Class III patients with maxillary deficiency, but it has undesirable dental effects. The purpose of this report is to introduce an alternative modality of maxillary protraction in patients with dentoskeletal Class III malocclusion using a modified C-palatal plate connected with elastics to a face mask. This method improved skeletal measurements, corrected overjet, and slightly improved the profile. The patients may require definitive treatment in adolescence or adulthood. The modified C-palatal plate enables nonsurgical maxillary advancement with maximal skeletal effects and minimal dental side effects.

  • We present here $UBVI$ and H${\alpha}$ photometric results of stellar sources in the bubble nebula NGC 7635. The early type members are selected from the photometric membership criteria. H${\alpha}$ photometry allows us to detect 11 pre-main sequence candidates with H${\alpha}$emission. In addition, we performed PSF photometry for the Spitzer IRAC and MIPS 24${\mu}m$ images from archive (program ID 20726, PI: J. Hester) in order to search for the young stellar objects (YSOs). Total 19 sources are classified as YSOs (7 class I, 11 class II, and 1 transitional disk candidates) in the color-color diagrams according to the classification scheme of Gutermuth et al.. Among them, 7 YSOs have counterparts in optical photometric data. These stars can be divided into two groups at given color indices. It implies that there occurred the star formation events more than twice. We would like to discuss the star formation history in the bubble nebula using the results from SED fitter (Robitaille et al.), color composite image from IRAC bands, and spatial distribution of early type stars and YSOs.

  • Infrared dark clouds(IRDCs) are believed to be the progenitors of massive stars and clusters. We obtained 350 and 850 ${\mu}m$ continuum maps of the IRDC G049.40-00.01 using SHARC-II on CSO. Twenty-one dense clumps were identified within G049.40-00.01 based on the 350 ${\mu}m$ continuum map with an angular resolution of about 9.6". We present submillimeter continuum maps and report physical properties of the clumps. The masses of clumps are from 50 to 600 solar mass. About 70% of the clumps are associated with bright 24 ${\mu}m$ emission sources indicating protostars. The most massive two clumps show enhanced, extended 4.5 ${\mu}m$ emission representing on-going star forming activity. The size-mass distribution of the clumps suggests that many of them are forming high-mass stars. G049.40-00.01 contains numerous objects in various evolutionary stages of star formation, from pre-stellar clumps to H II regions.

  • We Investigate dust stripping of Virgo cluster galaxies that are known to suffer HI gas stripping. The gas stripping phenomena of these galaxies may result from either ram pressure induced by the hot intracluster medium or gravitational tidal interactions between galaxies. While much efforts have been made to directly detect gas removed from cluster galaxies, the spatial distributions of dust, which should also be affected, are hardly known. Several previous studies have tried to directly detect the morphology of gas or dust using radio or infrared observations, but such approaches are hard to widely apply because of the limit of observational resolution and sensitivity. In this study, we try a different approach using optical data: measuring the background galaxy reddening by the dust stripped from the Virgo cluster members. Based on optical color excess maps of the background galaxies, we compare the ambient dust distribution with the HI morphology of the Virgo galaxies. We discuss how efficiently dust stripping can be detected with this method and how the stripped dust is associated with the removed gas according to HI gas stripping stage over the sample.

  • We report a novel design of the "linear astigmatism-free" three mirror system (LAF-TMS). In general, the linear astigmatism is one of the most dominant aberration degrading image qualities in common off-axis systems. The proposed LAF-TMS is based on a confocal off-axis three mirror system, where higher order aberrations are minimized via our numerical optimization. The system comprises three pieces of aluminum-alloy freeform mirrors that are feasible to be fabricated with current single-point diamond turning (SPDT) machining technology. The surface figures, dimensions, and positions of mirrors are carefully optimized for a LAF performance. For higher precision-positioning mechanism, we also included alignment parts: shims (for tilting) and L-brackets (for decentering). Any possible mechanical deformation due to assembly process as well as 1-G gravity, and its influence on optical performances of the system are investigated via the finite element (FE) analysis. The LAF-TMS has low f-number and a wide field of view, which is promising for sky monitoring programs such as supernova surveys.

  • A novel lectin specific to N-acetyl-D-galactosamine as well as N-acetyl-D-glucosamine was isolated from Bryopsis plumosa and named as BPL-4. Sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophorese (SDS-PAGE) and matrix-assisted laser desorption / ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry data showed that this lectin was a monomeric protein with molecular weight 12.9 kDa. The N-terminal amino acid sequences of the lectin were determined by Edman degradation and the full cDNA sequence encoding this lectin was obtained using the degenerate primers designed from the amino acid sequence. The size of the cDNA was 414 bp containing single open reading frame (ORF) encoding the lectin precursor. The homology analysis showed that this lectin might belong to H lectin group. BPL-4 showed high sequence similarity (60.6%) to BPL-3, which is a previously reported lectin from the same species. The comparative analysis on the lectin's primary structure showed two conserved domains including one possible active domain of H lectin group.

  • A new seismic design methodology for precast concrete diaphragms has been developed and incorporated into the current American seismic design code. This design methodology recognizes that diaphragm inertial forces during earthquakes are highly influenced by higher dynamic vibration modes and incorporates the higher mode effect into the diaphragm seismic design acceleration determination using a first mode reduced method, which applies the response modification coefficient only to the first mode response but keeps the higher mode response unreduced. However the first mode reduced method does not consider effects of diaphragm flexibility, which plays an important role on the diaphragm seismic response especially for the precast concrete diaphragm. Therefore this paper investigated the effect of diaphragm flexibility on the diaphragm seismic design acceleration for precast concrete shear wall structures through parametric studies. Several design parameters were considered including number of stories, diaphragm geometries and stiffness. It was found that the diaphragm flexibility can change the structural dynamic properties and amplify the diaphragm acceleration during earthquakes. Design equations for mode contribution factors considering the diaphragm flexibility were first established through modal analyses to modify the first mode reduced method in the current code. The modified first mode reduced method has then been verified through nonlinear time history analyses.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to compare differences on sexual satisfaction between non-smokers and smokers of Korean adult males. Method: The subjects of this study were 304 current smokers and 331 current non-smokers(stop smokers, never smokers) (58.0%). Because of the nature of the study, the participants were recruited through a home page advertisement of a brand newspaper company in Korea, and the survey was done through Internet system. The tool to measure participant's sexual satisfaction was adopted from the Arizona Sexual Experience Scale-Male. Result: Participant's age ranged from 20 to 49, mostly in their 30s-40s(96.1%). They were smoking average of 15 cigarettes per day. There were no significant difference on sexual satisfaction between current smokers and non-smokers( t=-.55, p>.05). However, there were significant difference on sexual satisfaction between ever smokers(n=481) and never smokers(n=154) (t=2.10, p<.05). There were significant differences an erectile and orgasm satisfaction according to number of cigarettes they smoked per day. 54.5% smokers who said that they have difficulty in keeping erectile state considered on smoking cessation within 30 days whereas 24.2% in those who said that keeping erectile state was easy. Conclusion: Informing about the high risk of sexual dysfunction with cigarette smoking should become a important part of smoking cessation education and for smoking adolescents.
