The Palsangjeon Pagoda is a five-story wooden building in the Beopjusa Temple area in the Songnisan national park in Chungcheongbuk-do, Korea. According to historical records, it was constructed in either AD 1605 or AD 1626. To specify the construction year more precisely, we took 41 wood samples for tree-ring analysis during repair actions in 2013; 28 from red pine (Pinus densiflora S. et Z.), 12 from oak (Quercus spp.), and 1 from fir (Abies spp.). The tree-ring boundaries became clearly visible by smoothing their cross-sectional surface and the tree-ring widths were measured under a stereo microscope. All tree-ring series were compared with each other to establish mean chronologies, which we then compared with local master chronologies established using tree rings collected from wooden elements of the Daeungjeon Hall which is the main building in the Beopjusa Temple area. As a result, it was verified that the red pines were felled in AD 1624 and in AD 1851. Moreover, it was verified that the oaks were also felled in AD 1624 based on cross-dating with the red pine chronology. We concluded that the Palsangjeon Wooden Pagoda was constructed in AD 1626, as mentioned in the historical record (Daeungdaekwangmyeongjeonbulsangki, 1630) and the letters on a purlin on the $4^{th}$ story, using oak and red pine felled in AD 1624 and repaired later on using red pine felled in AD 1851.

In generating DTM as basic data to GIS, the use of existing map is difficult to aquire current data and the method using airphotos needs cost for stereoplotting and ground control surveying. So, the method of DTM generation by satellite imagery is promising because satellite is able to observe wide area at once. In this study the program for SPOT bundle adjustment and image matching based on Coarse to Fine method is developed and various image enhancement algorithm is used for more accurate DTM generation and also evaluation of accuracy was carried out. Further more, orthophoto, a bird's eye-view, contour map producing, net-work analysis and terrain analysis were performed for GIS applications using generated DTM in this study. Generated DTM using SPOT stereo imagery is useful for GIS applications such as automated mapping, facility management, national geographic information system. Moreover developed automatic DTM generation pro-gram is studied, tested and verified more to be applicable to all the area.

Parcel boundary demarcation in agricultural area is commonly performed by terrestrial surveying methods, which have been pointed out as drawbacks to require consuming too much time and heavy expenditure. With the developments of high performance digital aerial cameras, however, studies on cadastral boundary demarcation with an aerial photogrammetric method attract a great attention in recent years. In this paper, an approach is presented to rapidly demarcate parcel boundaries coinciding with real ground ones in agricultural areas by extracting boundaries from the high resolution aerial orthoimages based on aerial targets. In order to investigate the feasibility of the proposed method, the accuracy of coordinates and area of parcel boundaries extracted from the aerial targets appeared in orthoimages compared with that of terrestrial boundary surveying results over the selected two test agricultural areas. Aerial image data were processed taken by a ADS80 digital camera with a GSD of 8cm in Changwon region, and by a DMCII camera with a GSD of 5cm in Suwon respectively. The result shows that the accuracy of parcel demarcation using aerial images is within the tolerance limits of coordinates and areas compared with that of terrestrial surveying. The proposed method using aerial target-based high resolution aerial images is therefore expected to be usefully applied in the agricultural parcel demarcation.

The vehicle recognition consists of two steps; the vehicle region detection step and the vehicle identification step based on the feature extracted from the detected region. Features using linear transformations have the effect of dimension reduction as well as represent statistical characteristics, and show the robustness in translation and rotation of objects. Among the linear transformations, the NMF(Non-negative Matrix Factorization) is one of part-based representation. Therefore, we can extract NMF features with sparsity and improve the vehicle recognition rate by the representation of local features of a car as a basis vector. In this paper, we propose a feature extraction using NMF suitable for the vehicle recognition, and verify the recognition rate with it. Also, we compared the vehicle recognition rate for the occluded area using the SNMF(sparse NMF) which has basis vectors with constraint and LVQ2 neural network. We showed that the feature through the proposed NMF is robust in the urban scene where occlusions are frequently occur.
This paper presents a new rooftop surface estimation method from 3D line segments. 3D rooftop surface estimation is based on the hierarchical grouping and initiated by 3D line merging for the disconnected 3D line segments. Merged 3D lines are applied to the detection of rooftop by surface estimating technique. To estimate surfaces we detect L-corner and T-corner points, and find fixed reliable junction points. The hypothesis of the possible rooftop surfaces are estimated as polygonal surfaces by these fixed junction points and building's rooftop models are generated by testing the possible surfaces in terms of assumptions of building surface properties. We carried out experiments by synthetic images on Avenches data set and the experimental results showed that we could reliably build 3D model with 3D surfaces, errors of which came up with 0.4 - 1.3 meter, 2.5 times more accurate than the elevation date from the conventional area-based stereo.

This paper presents a walking guidance system for blind pedestrians in an outdoor environment using just one single camera. Unlike many existing travel-aid systems that rely on stereo-vision, the proposed system aims to get necessary information of the road environment by using just single camera fixed at the belly of the user. To achieve this goal, a top-view image of the road is used, on which obstacles are detected by first extracting local extreme points and then verified by the polar edge histogram. Meanwhile, user motion is estimated by using optical flow in an area close to the user. Based on these information extracted from image domain, an audio message generation scheme is proposed to deliver guidance instructions via synthetic voice to the blind user. Experiments with several sidewalk video-clips show that the proposed walking guidance system is able to provide useful guidance instructions under certain sidewalk environments.
Orientation data of discontinuities are of paramount importance for rock slope stability studies because they control the possibility of unstable conditions or excessive deformation. Most orientation data are collected by using linear sampling techniques, such as borehole fracture mapping and the detailed scanline method (outcrop mapping). However, these data, acquired by the above linear sampling techniques, are subjected to bias, owing to the orientation of the sampling line. Even though a weighting factor is applied to orientation data in order to reduce this bias, the bias will not be significantly reduced when certain sampling orientations are involved. That is, if the linear sampling orientation nearly parallels the discontinuity orientation, most discontinuities orientation data which are parallel to sampling line will be excluded from the survey result. This phenomenon can cause serious misinterpretation of discontinuity orientation data because critical information is omitted. In the case study, orientation data collected by using the borehole fracture mapping method (vertical scanline) were compared to those based on orientation data from the detailed scanline method (horizontal scanline). Differences in results for the two procedures revealed a concern that a representative orientation of discontinuities was not accomplished. Equal-area, polar stereo nets were used to determine the distribution of dip angles and to compare the data distribution fur the borehole method versus those for the scanline method.
The purpose of this paper is to extract fast DEM (Digital Elevation Model) using satellite images. DEM extraction consists of three parts. First part is the modeling of satellite position and attitude, second part is the matching of two images to find corresponding points of them and third part is to calculate the elevation of each point by using the results of the first and second part. The position and attitude modeling of satellite is processed by using GCPs. A area based matching method is used to find corresponding points between the stereo satellite images. The elevation of each point is calculated using the exterior orientation parameters obtained from modeling and conjugate points from matching. In the DEM generation system, matching procedure holds most of a processing time, therefore to reduce the time for matching, a new fast matching algorithm using gradient correlation and fast similarity measure calculation method is proposed. In this paper, the SPOT satellite images, level 1A 6000$\times$6000 panchromatic images are used to extract DEM. The experiment result shows the possibility of fast DEM extraction with the satellite images.

The mud flat in Korea is the geographical feature generated from the sediment of rivers of Korea and China and it is the important topography for pollution purification and fishing industry. The mud flat is difficult to access such that it requires the aerial survey for the high-resolution spatial information of the area. In this study we used drones instead of the conventional aerial and remote sensing approaches which have shortcomings of costs and revisit times. We carried out GPS-based control point survey, temporal image acquisition using drones, bundle adjustment, stereo image processing for DSM and ortho photo generation, followed by co-registration between the spatio-temporal information.

Supplying high-resolution satellite image, we take much interest in the update and the revision of digital map and thematic map based on the satellite image. This study presented the possibility of the update and the revision to the existing digital map on a scale of l/5,000 and 1/25,000 to take advantage of the IKONOS satellite image. We performed geometric correction to make use of the ground control points of the existing digital map in IKONOS mono-image and created ortho-image by extracting digital elevation model from three dimensional contour data and altitude on the existing digital map. We revised changed features in the method of screen digitizing by overlapping orthorectified satellite image and existing digital map and flawed features of the unchanged area on the satellite images for positional accuracy analysis. As a result, rectification error is calculated at $\pm$3.35m by RMSE. There is a good possibility of update of digital map under the scale of 1/10,000. It is possible to the update of the large scale digital map over the scale of l/5,000, as if we used the method of stereo image and ground control point surveying.
