Ever since the Arctic region has opened its mysterious passage to mankind, continuous attempts to take advantage of its fastest route across the region has been made. The Arctic region is still covered by thick ice and thus finding a feasible navigating route is essential for an economical voyage. To find the optimal route, it is necessary to establish an efficient transit model that enables us to simulate every possible route in advance. In this work, an enhanced algorithm to determine the optimal route in the Arctic region is introduced. A transit model based on the simulated sea ice and environmental data numerically modeled in the Arctic is developed. By integrating the simulated data into a transit model, further applications such as route simulation, cost estimation or hindcast can be easily performed. An interactive simulation system that determines the optimal Arctic route using the transit model is developed. The simulation of optimal routes is carried out and the validity of the results is discussed.
This paper studies the multi-domain coupled system of one dimensional Arctic temperature field and establishes identification model about the thermodynamic parameters of sea ice (heat storage capacity, density and conductivity) by the so-called output least-square estimate according to the temperature data acquired by a monitor buoy installed in the Arctic ocean. By the optimal control theory, the existence and dependability of weak solution and the identifiability of identification model have been given. Moreover, necessary optimality condition is proposed. Furthermore, the optimal algorithm for the identification model is constructed. By using the optimal thermodynamic parameters of Arctic sea ice, the numerical simulation is implemented, and the numerical results of temperature distribution of Arctic sea ice are demonstrated.
It is well known there are a lot of undeveloped energy resource in the Arctic circle. As global warming enables the use of Arctic sea routes, the interest in Arctic resource development is increasing. Recently, polar neighbors and developed countries are actively promoting construction project in Arctic circle. However, the issue of environmental pollution caused by Arctic resource development has been raised. Today, environmental issues have a significant impact on the success of the project as well as on the costs of Arctic development projects. Therefore, it is necessary to secure a technology related to energy resource development and transportation for the Arctic resource project. In addition, the establishment of strategy for environmental impact assessment (EIA) is important. This paper shows the characteristics and procedures of EIA for developing Arctic resources, and reviews how to construct the systematically management of the necessary information. This system consists of a database required for environmental impact assessment and its application. The system is expected to be utilized for strategic development projects in the Arctic.

Damage due to ice collision is the most serious threat for the structural safety of ships operating in arctic region. Since such hull damages are usually caused by the collision of floating ice at excessive voyage speed of ships, the authorities responsible for the shipping at arctic sea are required to provide the speed limit for safe voyage, so-called safe speed. In countries near arctic ocean, such as Canada and Russia, empirical methods to determine the safe speed of ships based on their long experience of arctic voyage have been established and applied them in the real arctic navigation. However, in Korea, it is not easy to accumulate the arctic voyage experience and related technical database, so it seems to be a realistic approach to adopt a safe voyage speed estimating method in arctic sea based on the ice collision simulation technology using the nonlinear finite element analysis. The aim of this study is to develop a technique for estimating the safe voyage speed of vessels operating at arctic sea through the ice collision analysis, In order to achieve this goal, the standard procedure of the ice collision analysis is dealt with and example analysis was carried out and the results were considered. To investigate the validity of developed method, POLARIS system proposed by IMO was studied for comparison.

Managing with the presence of sea ice is the primary challenge in the operation of floating platforms in the Arctic region. It is widely accepted that offshore structures operating in Arctic conditions need station-keeping methods as well as ice management by icebreakers. Dynamic Positioning (DP) is one of the station-keeping methods that can provide mobility and flexibility in marine operations. The presence of sea ice generates complex external forces and moments acting on the vessel, which need to be counteracted by the DP system. In this paper, an icevaning control algorithm is proposed that enables Arctic offshore vessels to perform DP operations. The proposed icevaning control enables each vessel to be oriented toward the direction of the mean environmental force induced by ice drifting so as to improve the operational safety and reduce the overall thruster power consumption by having minimum external disturbances naturally. A mathematical model of an Arctic offshore vessel is summarized for the development of the new icevaning control algorithm. To determine the icevaning action of the Arctic offshore vessel without any measurements and estimation of ice conditions including ice drift, task and null space are defined in the vessel model, and the control law is formulated in the task space. A backstepping technique is utilized to handle the nonlinearity of the Arctic offshore vessel's dynamic model, and the Lyapunov stability theory is applied to guarantee the stability of the proposed icevaning control algorithm. Experiments are conducted in the ice tank of the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach.

An Arctic Spar is characterized by its conical shape near the waterline. In this case, the nonlinear effects from its irregular hull shape would be significant if there is either a large amplitude floater motion or steep wave conditions. Therefore, in this paper, the nonlinear effects of an Arctic Spar are numerically investigated by introducing a weakly nonlinear time-domain model that considers the time dependent hydrostatic restoring stiffness and Froude-Krylov forces. Through numerical simulations under multiple regular and irregular wave conditions, the nonlinear behavior of the Arctic Spar is clearly observed, but it is not shown in the linear analysis. In particular, it is found that the nonlinear Froude-Krylov force plays an important role when the wave frequency is close to the heave natural frequency. In addition, the nonlinear hydrostatic restoring stiffness causes the structure's unstable motion at a half of heave natural period.
This paper provides theoretical and experimental results to verify the crashworthiness of FH32 high-strength steel for arctic marine structures against ice impact. Assuming that side-shell structures of the Korean arctic research vessel, ARAON, with ice-notation PL10, collide with sheet ice, one-third-scale test specimens with a single transverse frame are manufactured. Impact-bending tests were conducted using a rigid steel striker that mimics sheet ice. Drop height was calculated by considering the speed at which sheet ice is rammed. Prior to impact-bending tests, tensile coupon tests were conducted at various temperatures. The impact-bending tests were carried out using test specimens fully fixed to the inside bottom frame of a cold chamber. The drop-weight velocity and test specimen deformation speed were measured using a high-speed camera and digital image correlation analysis (DICA). Numerical simulations were carried out under the same conditions as the impact-bending tests. The simulation results were in agreement with the test results, and strain rate was a key factor for the accuracy of numerical simulations.
To correctly estimate ice load and ice resistance for a ship's hull, it is essential to understand the material properties of sea ice during ice field trials and to use the proper experimental procedure for gathering ice strength data. The first Korean-made icebreaking research vessel (IBRV), ARAON, had her second sea ice trial in the Arctic Ocean during July and August of 2010. This paper describes the test procedures used to properly obtain sea ice strength data, which provides the basic information on the ship's performance in an ice-covered sea and can be used to estimate the correct ice load and ice resistance on the IBRV ARAON. The data gathered from three sea ice field trials during the Arctic voyage of the ARAON includes the ice compressive strength, flexural strength, and failure strain of sea ice. This paper analyzes the gathered sea ice data in comparison with data from the first voyage of the ARAON during her Antarctic Sea ice trial in January 2010.

This paper introduces a new method of ice load generation in the time domain for the station-keeping performance evaluation of Arctic offshore structures. This method is based on the ice load spectrum and mean ice load. Recently, there has been increasing interest in Arctic offshore technology for the exploration and exploitation of the Arctic region because of the better accessibility to the Arctic ocean provided by the global warming effect. It is essential to consider the ice load during the development of an Arctic offshore structure. In particular, when designing a station-keeping system for an Arctic offshore structure, a consideration of the ice load acting on the vessel in the time domain is essential to ensure its safety and security. Several methods have been developed to consider the ice load in the time domain. However, most of the developed methods are computationally heavy because they consider every ice floe in the sea ice field to calculate the ice load acting on the vessel. In this study, a new approach to generate the ice load in the time domain with computational efficiency was suggested, and its feasibility was examined. The ice load spectrum and mean ice load were acquired from a numerical analysis with GPU-event mechanics (GEM) software, and the ice load with the varying heading of a vessel was reconstructed to show the feasibility of the proposed method.
The rising global demand for energy resources may lead to greater interest in the Arctic region. Since it has various resources, such as oil and gas, and large potential as a strategic location in exploration and production (E&P), there is likely to occur island sovereignty issues between the five arctic costal states and other countries. While global warming has led to the opening of the Northeast Passage and the Northwest Passage, several obstacles may impede the development of this area such as the low temperature environment, infrastructure problems in a limited area, flow assurance, environmental regulations, etc. To overcome these problems, various techniques have been applied in the exploration, development, production, transportation, and environment fields and it seems to be made technical development in extreme environment. In this study, the E&P status of representative states and development technologies in the Arctic region have been summarized with regard to carrying out E&P related to drilling, development, production, and operation in oil and gas fields. Furthermore, environmental factors have been taken into account to enhance progress with regard to E&P and ensure sustainable development in the Arctic. On that basis, it will be possible to secure oil and gas field development, production technology and R&D infrastructure in the Arctic.
