  • In a situation where the recognition of archival services remains minimal, an evaluation of archival information services by users could provide a better understanding of users' practical needs and present helpful information for improved services. A service evaluation by users using questionnaires was conducted in university archives, which can similarly categorize their user groups and have frequent interactions with the users for the provision of services. Questionnaires suitable for the evaluation of university archives were developed based on the review of the evaluation tools in archival information services. From April to October 2015, 113 users' evaluation results were collected from 13 university archives. As a result of goodness of fit tests, the users' service evaluation items were categorized into four parts: Use Results, Provision of Information on Archives, Accessibility to Archives, and Interaction. For those four parts, evaluation by descriptive statistics, T-test, correlation analysis, and regression analysis were conducted. Users evaluated Interaction parts highly while they were less satisfied with Provision of Information on Archives. T-test results showed that university archives with search engines and with electronic records management systems were evaluated higher than archives without such technology. In the regression analysis, the Interaction and Provision of Information on Archives parts were found to have an influence on the Use Results part.

After all, through the analysis of Electronic Question/Answering Function to understand a user's demand under online circumstances, groping for the method to provide an appropriate Archival Information Service is the most important thing. For this, in this study, it researched the users interviews and the research related to users as a precedence study, and the studies having examined the state of demanding information by users through analyzing the e-mail actually. Additionally, by looking over the study of Library and Information Science that is activated in a field of Electronic Question/Answering Function rather than Archival Science, as a matter of fact, the study has come up with the standard for analyzing Electronic Question/Answering Function. And based on the precedence study, the instances for the National Archives from USA, England, Australia and Canada were analyzed, and the chance of activating Archival Information Service were tried to grope for in the study. This study might be one of methodologies in examining the users study that is not activated yet in Archival Science. Therefore, the users study can be carried out in various methods as well as Electronic Archives/Answering Service. This study might be the important information in providing far better Archival Information Services. It is desirable that based on this opportunity, the study related to the various users by examining not only Electronic Archives/Answering Function but also Question/Answering of the users and the Archivists in the filed to the larger extend will be activated for Archival Science.

  • Archival descriptions are significant in utilizing archives, as they are important tools for archival research and use. Meanwhile, content services are key services in modern society, where the use of archives and the importance of content are increasing. In this study, archival descriptions and content services were not viewed as different areas but as a relationship that could advance complementarily. This is because if archival descriptions are rich and well-prepared, high-quality content can be produced based on them, and archival descriptions can be enriched if well-made content is supplemented or linked to the descriptions again. This study intends to reveal the complementary relationship between archival descriptions and content services and propose an advancement plan based on this relationship. As such, the current status and problems of the archival descriptions and content services of the National Archives of Korea and the Presidential Archives website were analyzed, and the UK's National Archives (TNA), the USA's National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), the Seoul Metropolitan Archives, and the Korea Democracy Foundation's Open Archives were selected as exemplary cases for comparison. Based on the implications of the six analyzed institutions, an advancement plan for archival descriptions and content services, as well as a complementary development plan, was proposed. Through this study, it is expected that archival descriptions and content services will develop in a mutually complementary direction.

  • The purpose of the study is to develop the indicator and scale for evaluating the service environments of archives and to assess the physical service environments of National Archives of Korea (NAK), and then to suggest the alternatives to improve the current service environments on the basis of the results of evaluation. To achieve the purpose, the study designed three research phases: first, to develop the indicator and scale to measure the current service environments by merging universal design indicators and various standards of NAK for establishing facilities and environments on the basis of the barrier-free authentication indicators; second, to evaluate the current service environments of NAK with the newly developed scale; finally to suggest alternatives to improve the current environments on the basis of the evaluation findings. The study found that current service environments of NAK have critical limits on the areas and facilities to provide direct archival information services to users such as reference service desks, showrooms, education rooms, seminar rooms, etc. On the basis of the results, the study suggested the alternatives and further studies for making barrier-free service environments of archives.
