A Study on the Myochim theory applied to educational space in the Chosun Dynasty - Focused on Seowon Architecture - (조선시대 교육공간에 적용된 묘침제에 관한 연구 - 서원(書院)건축을 중심으로 -)

  • Confucian ideologies formed a unique spatial order in the spatial composition of seowon architecture. Confucian scholars viewed ancient China as the ideal society, so they tried to apply the "Myochim" theory, the architectural system of the time, to the Joseon society. However, it was not easy to apply ancient architectural ideas in Joseon in the 16th century. Therefore, various opinions were presented by scholars to establish the relationship between Joseon alone. Unlike the Ki-ho school application of this theory, the construction of Seowon was done according to ancient principles from a practical standpoint, there were fewer experiments for actual application in Yeong-nam school. This was a pragmatic attitude that presupposes a clear difference between the ancient Chinese system and the reality of Joseon in the 17th century.

  • Contemporary architecture has a tendency to concretely approach based on the concept of Deuleuze's 'fold' diversity problems creating continuously potential diversities within Post-structural paradigm. Contemporary architecture relates to human life through its relation with human being. The research investigates through case study the possible relation of the concept of Deulezue's 'fold', one of his concepts of 'unfolding' based on Monadology, with logic of creation that constructs a space in contemporary architectural space. Eight contemporary architectural spaces since 1990 with architectural embodiment of Deulezue's 'fold' concept have been selected as cases. Based on the fact that the potential possibility of a space can be embodied by the thinking of 'fold', the research draws four physical activities such as 'properties connection', 'beyond border', 'diversity of circulation' and 'potential opportunity', through which it studies on the principle of actualization of space creation. Consideration of metaphysical theory as a pre-modern and outdated one may lose a huge potentiality. Leibniz's metaphysics can be rediscovered as a model that provides diverse potentiality. The concept of 'fold' in Monadology needs be reconsidered because it possibly suggests a methodology that embodies through the actualization of space the meanings underlain in contemporary architectural space.

  • Science (natural science) is the systematic attempt to understand and interpret the nature phenomenon. For this reason, architects have used science to adapt nature to their design. With the rise of modern science, architecture became more closely related with science. Science available to develop new technology for architecture and it influenced architect's idea and concept. Symbolically, Architects use method or process of science to generate building form. The Rules of compositing particles in the chemistry or DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) in the biology are used to generate a form of building. Literally, Architects use technology as a tool of science to improve physical performance of architecture. Like mathematical understanding of structure load enabled people to construct enclosure without columns or any of support system inside of architecture. Still natural phenomenon is not fully understood as science and science is still discovering a new phenomenon or changing its theory to adapt new discovery. New discovery or limitation of science influenced architecture throughout the history. This paper is to discuss how architectural theories are rest upon idea set forth by science. In addition, how technology as a tool of science has been utilized in architecture.

  • The remaining service life (RSL) of buildings has been an important issue in the field of building and facility management, and its development is also one of the essential factors for achieving sustainable infrastructure. Since the estimation of RSL of buildings is heavily affected by the subjectivity of individual inspector or engineer, much effort has been placed in the development of a rational method that can estimate the RSL of existing buildings more quantitatively using objective measurement indices. Various uncertain factors contribute to the deterioration of the structural performance of buildings, and most of the common building structures are constructed not with a single structural member but with various types of structural components (e.g., beams, slabs, and columns) in multistory floors. Most existing RSL estimation methods, however, consider only an individual factor. In this study, an estimation method for RSL of concrete buildings is presented by utilizing a fuzzy theory to consider the effects of multiple influencing factors on the deterioration of durability (e.g., concrete carbonation, chloride attack, sulfate attack), as well as the current structural condition (or damage level) of buildings.

  • Baroque is fundamentally in contrast with renaissance style classicism, which attempted to fix a world view itself as the value of perpetuity. Furthermore, it is interpreted as a topic of incompletion or transformation that is not defined or is not exemplary and which may be enjoyed by people in the classical life, which requires a microscopic concept in contrast with dualism, the central axis of western civilization, namely, rational lucidity. Also, such characteristics are estimated to serve as a lubricant in life while going beyond the formal aesthetic level of art even from a contemporary perspective, and to play a productive role and to have potential. Consequently, this paper assumed that the concepts expressed by the 20th century US contemporary architect Richard Meier of a complex space, namely architectural formative vocabularies such as overlapping, interpenetration, collision, and collage style mixture created by a layered structure, in his architecture are in common with the double surface technique and juxtaposition of a flat structure of Baroque architecture. Then, the paper analyzed and considered the characteristics. The paper considered the following two issues: Such Baroque style formal principle is reinterpreted against a backdrop in which his architectural flow based on the domino theory of Le Corbusier became established as his own unique architectural feature, and it may be proposed as one big flow that enables us to seek again modernistic architecture that attempts to make an architectural space absolute as an atypical formal contour.

A Study on the Meaning and the Design Trend of the Body in Contemporary Architecture (현대 건축에 있어서 신체의 의미와 디자인 적용에 관한 연구)

  • This study is aimed to specify the meaning of the body and the design trends in contemporary architecture. Architecture is based on the human life of various meaning, events, experiences, images, senses and interactions through the body. Thoughts, behaviors, and senses of human are interrelated in architectural experiences. Individuals experience the built environments and space, not through the ideas but through the senses and movements of the body. So, bodies make the real space of architecture. Contemporary architecture accepts the theory of phenomenology and places on the thoughts of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Heidegger, Nroberg Schulz and so on. Such researches effect on the architectural trends to make design processes works on the programs in views of the expansion and the structuralization of human body. In detail, the aim of this study is to analyse the architecture as the fields of the subject with body as the center, design processes and principles changed form metaphysical thought to phenomenological discourse, and the design trends in contemporary architecture at last. In process of movements, vision centered architecture moves into the bodily experienced architecture and changed the trends from absolute form design to design of relative processes. In conclusion, architectural formation-dissolution-reconstitution of body creates the architectural thoughts such as human proportions, perspective space, ergonomics, modular, organic architecture, experience space, synesthesia, event architecture, fashion-invoked architecture, interactive surfaces, metamorphosis, and others.

  • According to Post-modernists including deconstructivists, as Modernism is changed into Post-modernism, the paradigm is shifted from consciousness to language. The paradigm of consciousness corresponds to representational language, and the paradigm of language to self-referential one. In post-modern age most of architects are wandering what kind of language architecture is. Some theorists contend that architecture is representational, and others that it is self-referential. Allan Colquhoun, who is known as one of the best architectural theorists inUnited States, accepts both the former and the latter, but fails to reveal the meaning and the limitation, of the two languages. Although he believes that the representational language of architecture ('figure') is the source of self-referential language of architecture('form'), he never clearly answers what kind of language architecture. In order to overcome the limitation and the meaning of Colquhoun's figure and form, and synthesize the two language, this essay appropriates Martin Heidegger's some concepts, 'ready-to-hand,' 'present-at-hand' and 'being-in-the-world' to make a theoretical framework for 'image' which prevails over and synthesizes 'form' and 'figure.' Since Image is based upon both 'being-in-the world' and 'ready-to-hand,' it is the source of 'form' and 'figure.' When 'image' is fragmented, the former and the latter emerge. Image is therefore both the former and the latter because it represents and self-refers a world as a reality.

A Study on the Texts Related to Ancestral Ritual Building in 『Ohju Yeonmun Jangjeon Sango』 (『오주연문장전산고』 사전(祀典)의 건축 관련부분 해석과 연구)

  • "Ohju Yeonmun Jangjeon Sango" written by Lee, Gyu-gyeng is one of the most important encyclopedias in the period of Chosun-Dynasty. There are two chapters related to architecture in this book, one is "ancestral rite governance·human"chapter, and the other is "architecture·human" chapter. Both of them are hard to understand because they are written in ancient Chinese and consist of various quotations in ambiguous way. This paper as a partial study is deal with the former. It makes difference between writter's original texts and quotations through textual research, and translates to modern Korean, and analyze information about ancient architecture in texts. The texts can divide to three sections. The first introduces three Chinese architectural theory books as "Gogonggi(考工記)", "Yeongjo Beopsik(營造法式)" and "Mokgyeng(木經)", and mentions about the prototype of the royal ancestral ritual building in "Gogonggi Toju(考工記圖注)". The second quotes "Seoyeong(書影)" to introduce "Yeongjo Beopsik". The third quotes "PaePyeon(稗編)" to introduce "Yeongjo Beopsik" and "Mokgyeng", and mentions about the counting unit of columns of the royal ancestral ritual building. Although the purpose for these quotations is not directly mentioned, but we can find it is intended to explain the architectural prototype and lay-out of the royal ancestral ritual building.

A Study on the Interpretation of Structuralism & Post-Structuralism in Louis I. Kahn's Architecture with the View of Aesthetics -focused on the review of Arnulf Lüchinger's and Michael Benedikt's interpretation of Structuralism & Post-Structuralism- (미학(美學)적 분석으로 본 루이스 칸 건축의 구조주의적 해석 -뤼힝거와 베네딕트의 구조주의적 해석 비판을 중심으로-)

  • One of the reasons why Louis I. Kahn is regarded as a pioneer of Post-Modern Architecture is that his works are interpreted as Structuralism and Post-structuralism in architecture. A. $L{\ddot{u}}chinger^{\prime}s$ interpretation of Structuralism and M. Benedikt's interpretation of Post-structuralism; especially Deconstruction Theory, in Kahn's architecture must be proper cases for understanding this context. However, when we precisely analyze their insistence, several fallacies can be found with their incomplete grasp of Kahn's architectural thinking. The most problematic thing is that they maximize fallibility with focusing only on the analysis of superficial phenomenon, such as formal composition, disposition of space, decorative features, and so on. Therefore, the meaning of architectural essence toward Post-Modern Architecture which Kahn had pursued during his lifetime is sometimes misinterpreted. For this reason, this paper attempt to reanalyze Kahn's philosophy of architecture deeply with the view of aesthetics which has a key role in both overcoming their fallacies and illuminating the potentiality of Kahn's architecture.

Evaluation of Hydraulic Conductivity of Bentonite Filter Cake Using Modified Fluid Loss Test

  • The mixture of bentonite powder and water is generally used to maintain the stability of excavation surface during the construction of vertical cutoff walls. The filter cake on the sidewall surface is the result of filtration of slurry into the adjacent soil formation. The filter cake is believed to have a very low hydraulic conductivity compared to that of the cutoff wall. This paper evaluates hydraulic conductivities of bentonite filter cakes set up with three types of bentonites under various pressure levels. A modified fluid loss test was employed in this experiment. Theory of filtration process was reviewed to explain the procedure in the present experiment. Hydraulic conductivity of the filter cakes with consideration of the filter medium resistance was evaluated. The results of the experiment with two calculation methods and discussion are presented to show the efficiency of the modified fluid loss test.
