  • As the construction industry becomes bigger and more complicated, standardization of terms should be established between academic and industrial fields in order to accumulate and share information technology. The aim of this study is to investigate and analyze the research trends and actual usage of construction and architectural terms in Korea. For this purpose, we examined research related to construction and architectural terms by searching RISS up to August 2014. We also analyzed document types and contents of research by year. As a result, 130 research studies related to construction and architectural terms were searched. Of document types, glossary ranks the highest, followed by academic journal papers, master's theses and research reports. Research related to construction and architectural terms began in 1939, and was actively studied between the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s. Within the research, list and opinion of related construction and architectural terms are found the most frequently, followed by standardization, analysis, alteration, dictionary and wordbook, and search system of terms. Despite these efforts and research, standardization of terms has not yet been consolidated between academic and industrial fields. Therefor, we suggest six proposals in order to standardize the terms. This study is an attempt to see the trends and conditions of construction and architectural terms and to provide base-line data and an insight for future research.

  • The growth-share matrix is a portfolio planning tool developed by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) to assist competitive positioning in the international market including those in the construction industry. This matrix is helpful in balancing the firm's cash-flow, and it can suggest strategic directions for each business unit. However, its effectiveness and applicability have long been debated in the academic field due to the complex and unique industrial context of construction. To solve the dispute, this research clarifies the applicability of theories underlying the growth-share matrix to the construction industry. Empirical research based on actual financial data of Korean construction firms is adopted for the statistical analysis including one-way analysis of variance and correlation analysis. The results of this research show that empirical findings on the relationship between performance variables. In this context, this research can provide important insights on the concept of portfolio management in the construction industry.

  • The surface design in architecture plays a role as an indicator that symbolizes cultures and styles, in accordance with the course of history and the standards of the time. The surface design that determines the facade of an architectural structure allows us to have a more clear understanding about the functions, programs and structures, as well as the periodical concept of the architects than any other components of the architecture. The purpose of this paper was to examine how architectural surface designs were realized, using commonly-used materials. This study provides meaningful implications, in that it suggests common features in terms of design methodologies (between architecture and non-architecture fields), and presented new possibilities for contemporary architectural surface designs through the classification of building system methods depending on fabric properties, and through the case study analysis of architectural surface designs; in addition, the results of this study could be utilized as basic data for future studies on the possibility of the expression of surface designs across a broader domain.

  • For many social scientists, the comparative method has been a part of the common enterprise of describing, explaining, and developing theories about socio-cultural phenomena. However, it is rare that comparison has been methodologically considered in architectural history in spite of the usefulness for understanding the similarities and differences among architectural styles. This research emphasizes the importance of comparative methodology in architectural history and proposes an example which can be introduced from the comparative method for social studies. The application in this study is based on the assumption that an architectural phenomenon is a kind of social phenomenon and comparative method in social study can be applied to architectural history. The method is to generate and test hypotheses through establishing functional correlation between variables treated as the objective facts that differentiate one type of building from another.

  • This study aims to research the Kisho Kurokawa's architectural concepts and expressions that are comprised of various and complex theories system for Korean's globalization of architecture. Kurokawa's architectural concepts are composed by Metabolism, Metamorphosis and Symbiosis. And intermediate zone, ambiguity, multivalence are theories that work as media in changing process levels to three main concepts and these are used as media of Metamorphosis which embody Symbiosis. Metabolism include concepts of Metamorphosis and Symbiosis. Symbiosis is comprise of concepts of Metabolism and Metamorphosis, and is a ultimate goal of these three main concepts. Metamorphosis works as a medium in changing process levels from Metabolism to Symbiosis. The architectural expressions are embodied according to these main three concepts and theories of media in changing process levels. And these architectural expressions are analyzed by three elements as follows: form, material & color, structure & technique.

  • Knowledge-based Service Industry is an industry that creates added value through the production, processing, and use of knowledge. Comparing to other service industries, it is innovation-oriented business endeavors having the characteristics that exert the great influences on other fields. Meanwhile, however, research efforts thereof are yet insignificant. In this study, we analyzed the innovation performance of architectural design office which creates knowledge services, having raised the necessity of innovation of the design office. The innovation performance were classified according to the extent of efficiency of the architectural design office making use of DEA-Tier analysis, and, for those architectural design offices that showed significant differences in efficiency, we presented the case studies of the firms that were substantial benchmarking targets from short, medium, and long-term perspectives.

  • This research aims to illustrate the structure of the ancient Korean wooden buildings by a comparative study of the historical resources such as stone remains, wall paintings historiographies and excavations. As stone pagodas are the most typical stone remains, I selected for analysis some stone pagodas which contain architectural elements and results of the study are as follows: 1) The number of stories and structural modes of the base stone part show the wooden architectural aspects: they have one or two stories and their base part is constructed in the mode of assembling rectangular stones. 2) The body of the pagoda contains such architectural elements as pillars, door and windows, crossbeams, balcony, bracket sets. 3) The roof of the stone pagoda contains such architectural elements as eaves, roofs and modes of stone assembling. The results inferred through this research could be of help for further comparative studies with the other secondary materials by providing basic knowledge for it.

  • The nondestructive test is widely used in the field of diagnosis and maintenance to evaluate the degree of damaging of structures caused by aging, and the demand for this test method is expected to continue increasing. However, there is a lack of standards related to the nondestructive test, and South Korea is relying heavily on developed nations for original technologies related to diagnosis. It is an urgent task to establish a nondestructive test method appropriate for the circumstance of South Korea. The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze estimated error of compressive strength in single-story structures comprised of vertical and horizontal reinforced concrete members using the impact testing method and rebound hardness method, which are nondestructive test methods, and to review on-site applicability of these methods. Based on compressive strength of the structures estimated, overall mean error was 21.2% for the impact testing method and 15.6% for the rebound hardness method. The necessity of a reliable diagnostic method based on compound nondestructive test methods to increase accuracy of estimation was confirmed.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the programs and the roles of Architectural Centers by their types in terms of the main body of organization. In order to figure out the programs and the roles, we examined the possibility to have different roles and varied collaboration ways depending on their main body types : central, municipal, architectural associations, and other private sectors. We also investigated the process of establishment of the Centers, their programs to promote the public and private partnerships focusing on the quality improvement of public architecture, research & investigations, education & publication, and cultural exchange & events. From this study, we could find out the differentiated management strategies and the ways of collaboration in public & private sectors for architectural centers and understand which aspects should be taken into consideration in the establishment of architectural centers. Centers initiated by public sectors generally have been focusing on supporting funds and centers initiated by private sectors relatively have developed the field oriented programs activating collaborative network and public participation.
