In this paper, we introduce algorithms for constructing broadcasting and multicasting trees. These algorithms are general because they may be used for tree cost functions that are of arbitrary form. Thus, essentially the same algorithmic procedures are used for different tree cost functions. We evaluate the effectiveness of the general algorithms by applying them to different cost functions that are often used to model wired and wireless networks. Besides providing a unifying framework for dealing with many present and future tree-construction applications, these algorithms typically outperform some existing algorithms that are specifically designed for energy-aware wireless networks. These general algorithms perform well at the expense of higher computational complexity. They are centralized algorithms, requiring the full network information for tree construction. Thus, we also present variations of these general algorithms to yield other algorithms that have lower complexity and distributed implementation.
In this article, a simple and robust multi-objective assessment method to control design angles and node positions connected among steel outrigger truss members is proposed to approve both structural safety and economical cost. For given outrigger member layouts, the present method utilizes general-purpose prototypes of outrigger members, having resistance to withstand lateral load effects directly applied to tall buildings, which conform to variable connecting node and design space deposition. Outrigger layouts are set into several initial design conditions of height to width of an arbitrary given design space, i.e., variable design space. And then they are assessed in terms of a proposed multi-objective function optimizing both minimal total displacement and material quantity subjected to design impact factor indicating the importance of objectives. To evaluate the proposed multi-objective function, an analysis model uses a modified Maxwell-Mohr method, and an optimization model is defined by a ground structure assuming arbitrary discrete straight members. It provides a new robust assessment model from a local design point of view, as it may produce specific optimal prototypes of outrigger layouts corresponding to arbitrary height and width ratio of design space. Numerical examples verify the validity and robustness of the present assessment method for controlling prototypes of outrigger truss members considering a multi-objective optimization achieving structural safety and material cost.

This paper proposes an implicit method for computing the minimum cost feedback vertex set for a graph. For an arbitrary graph, a Boolean function is derived, whose satisfying assignments directly correspond to feedback vertex sets of the graph. Importantly, cycles in the graph are never explicitly enumerated, but rather, are captured implicitly in this Boolean function. This function is then used to determine the minimum cost feedback vertex set. Even though computing the minimum cost satisfying assignment for a Boolean function remains an NP-hard problem, it is possible to exploit the advances made in the area of Boolean function representation in logic synthesis to tackle this problem efficiently in practice for even reasonably large sized graphs. The algorithm has obvious application in flip-flop selection for partial scan. The algorithm proposed in this paper is the first to obtain the MFVS solutions for many benchmark circuits.

This paper proposes a method to generate virtual intensity field in space. The sound field of a zone enclosing the listener position is controlled to have maximum acoustic intensity to the desired direction. In order to control acoustic intensity of a zone, space-averaged active intensity is introduced. The ratio of space-averaged active intensity and control effort is defined as a cost function and expressed as a function of source control signals. It is shown that the cost function represents radiation efficiency of multiple sources. The control signals maximizing the cost function is found through eigenvalue analysis. The proposed method is verified by numerical simulations performed in free field condition, and the results provide a relation between wavelength and the size of controllable intensity field.

This paper describes a method to design a guaranteed cost controller for a system with uncertain parameters. The design procedure consists of defining an arbitrary function which satisfies certain condition and minimizing it over the control input. When the method is applied to a class kof linear systems with uncertain parameters, a Riccati equation with additional terms results. A simple example is presented to illustrate the usefulness of this method.
The artificial potential method uses a potential field to guide a robot from a start to a goal configuration respectively. The potential field consists of attractive potential used to pull a robot toward a goal and repulsive potential to keep it away from obstacles. However, there are two problems concerning local minimum and computational cost to be resolved in conventional artificial potential methods. This study proposes a method utilizing a spline surface that interpolates arbitrary boundaries and a domain reduction method that reduces the unnecessary area. The proposed spline surface interpolates arbitrary shaped boundaries and is used as an artificial potential to guide a robot for global motion planning of a mobile robot. A reduced domain process reduces the unnecessary domain. We apply a distance-weighted function as such a function, which blends distances from each boundary with a reduction in computational time compared with other analytical methods. As a result, this paper shows that an arbitrary boundary spline surface provides global planning and a domain reduction method reduces local minimum with quick operation.

This paper presents a novel signal tracking algorithm for GNSS receivers using a MLE technique. In order to perform a robust signal tracking in severe signal environments, e.g., high dynamics for navigation vehicles or weak signals for indoor positioning, the MLE based signal tracking approach is adopted in the paper. With assuming white Gaussian additive noise, the cost function of MLE is expanded to the cost function of NLSE. Efficient and practical approach for Doppler frequency tracking by the MLE is derived based on the assumption of code-free signals, i.e., the cost function of the MLE for carrier Doppler tracking is used to derive a discriminator function to create error signals from incoming and reference signals. The use of the MLE method for carrier tracking makes it possible to generalize the MLE equation for arbitrary codes and modulation schemes. This is ideally suited for various GNSS signals with same structure of tracking module. This paper proposes two different types of MLE based tracking method, i.e., an iterative batch processing method and a non-iterative feed-forward processing method. The first method is derived without any limitation on time consumption, while the second method is proposed for a time limited case by using a 1st derivative of cost function, which is proportional to error signal from discriminators of conventional tracking methods. The second method can be implemented by a block diagram approach for tracking carrier phase, Doppler frequency and code phase with assuming no correlation of signal parameters. Finally, a state space form of FLL/PLL/DLL is adopted to the designed MLE based tracking algorithm for reducing noise on the estimated signal parameters.

Most Bayesian approaches to model selection of wavelet analysis have drawbacks that computational cost is expensive to obtain accuracy for the fitted unknown function. To overcome the drawback, this article introduces loss functions which are criteria for level dependent threshold selection in wavelet based Bayesian methods with arbitrary size and regular design points. We demonstrate the utility of these criteria by four test functions and real data.

In this study, a threshold policy is considered for the M/M/2 queueing system with server vacations. The probability generating function for the number of customers present in the system is derived using an embedded Markov chain approach. Then, assuming a linear cost structure, an efficient procedure to find an optimal threshold policy is presented. The Laplace-Stieltjes transofrm for th waiting time of an arbitrary customer under a "FIFO" discipline is also derived.o derived.

This paper considers an (r, Q) policy for operation of a multipurpose facility. It is assumed that whenever the inventory level falls below r, the model starts to produce the fixed amount of Q. The facility can be utilized for extra production during idle periods, that is, when the inventory level is still greater than r right after a main production operation is terminated or an extra production operation is finished. But, whenever the facility is in operation for an extra production, the operation can not be terminated for the main production even though the inventory level falls below r. In the model, the demand for the product is assumed to arrive according to a compound Poisson process and the processing time required to produce a product is assumed to follow an arbitary distribution. Similarly, the orders for the extra production is assumed to accur in a Poisson process are the extra production processing time is assumed to follow an arbitrary distribution. It is further assumed that unsatisfied demands are backordered and the expected comulative amount of demands is less than that of production during each production period. Under a cost structure which includes a setup/ production cost, a linear holding cost, a linear backorder cost, a linear extra production lost sale cost, and a linear extra production profit, an expression for the expected cost per unit time for a given (r, Q) policy is obtained, and using a convex property of the cost function, a procedure to find the optimal (r, Q) policy is presented.
