Groundwater flow in a two-layer aquifer is studied theoretically and experimentally. Nonlinear differential equations are independently linearized for the upper and the lower layer, and approximate solutions are obtained. Fine sands and coarse sands are used in experiments. For steady flow, theoretical solutions agrees excellently with experimental results For unsteady flow, however, agreement is not so good, because the experimental conditions do not match with theoretical assumptions.

The discharges of groundwater flow were estimated using Darcy's method along the coastal zone in the Masan Bay. The estimates using the information, i.e., groundwater level, location of the observation well, hydraulic conductivity, the thickness of the aquifer, and coastline length, were 1.65% of the precipitation of the watershed. The estimated groundwater discharges through fractured rock aquifer and the aquifer with sedimentary material were $0.7\times10^4$$m^2/year$and $1.0\times10^7$$m^3/year$ respectively. Whereas, the discharge estimated by KORDI (2003) using isotopes method is about 20 times larger than the estimates from this study because of the influence of the re-circulated seawater through the coastal zone aquifer. In order to quantify this effect in detail, the groundwater levels and salinity changes in the observation wells located in the coastal zone should be continuously monitored and analyzed.

Groundwater flow in confined aquifer and heat transport in underground geologic media are using same governing equation(line source) like well fuction. Therefore the conventional slope method using only later data obtained from in-situ thermal response test to determine the thermal conductivity of vertical geothermal heat exchanger(GHEX) is basically identical with one of Theis straight line method of aquifer test under artesian condition. In case that the pumping rate(Q, $m^3$/d) and drawdown(s,m) which are used for input data of existing hydrogeologic computer programs for aquifer test are replaced and converted to supplying heat energy per unit length of bore hole(Q/L,w/m or Kcal/h.m) and temperatures (T,$^{\circ}C$)measured at in and out-let of GHEX as in put data respectively, thermal conductivity around geothermal heat exchanger can be easily estimated without any special modification of the existing hydrogeologic computer program. Two numbers of time series temperature variation data obtained from in situ geothermal response test are analized using Theismethods(standard curve and straight line method) by using existing aquifer test program and conventional Slope method proposed by ASHRAE. The results show that thermal conductivity values estimated by two straight methods are identical and the difference of estimated values between standard curve methods and Slope method are also within acceptable ranges. In general, the thermal conductivity estimated from Theis straight linemethod gives more accurate value than the one of Slope method due to that Slope method uses only visual matching otherwise Theis method uses automatic curve matching estimation with reducing RSS.
The oceanic tides have an effect on groundwater levels in coastal fractured rock aquifers. The observed groundwater table fluctuations caused by the effective stress through an aquifer are shown as sine curves similar with tidal fluctuation. To estimate a hydrogeologic parameter, tidal method is utilized with groundwater level fluctuations of two monitoring wells. Cross correlation function is used to calculate time lags between observed groundwater levels and tide, and the deeper well shows longer time lag. The storage coefficients calculated by using tidal efficiency and time lag show large differences. The storage coefficients obtained by using time lags are close to the result of slug test, and that of the deeper well shows closer value by slug test. The tidal efficiency is unsatisfied to apply in the tidal method because of an effect of phreatic aquifer and the vertical flow of groundwater through fractured confining bed. This tidal method can be an economical and effective way to define the parameter by considering the location of observation well and hydrogeologic characteristics of a coastal aquifer.
A study is made on the determination of the total head distribution using the random walk theory within a confined flow system with complicated boundary conditions. Both nonhomogeniety and anisotropy of the aquifer are considered. The overlying on the aquifer may have sheet piles and the impervious boundary may be inclined. Use is made of the Monte Carlo simulation based on the random walk theory to determine the total head at a given Point. A computer program is developed for practical use. The proposed method was evaluated by comparing the results with those obtained by other method, i.e., the conventional flow net, the finite difference method, and the method of fragment. It is found that all the values are in reasonable agreement and the method is sufficiently accurate for practical use.
Well production by a riverbank filtration facility with multi-radial collector well systems in Jeungsan-ri, Changnyeong gun, Korea was evaluated. In this study, the drawdown at collector wells due to pumping and groundwater inflow rates along the horizontal arms of the collector wells were computed through numerical simulations. Sensitivities of the well production to hydraulic conductivity and well flow coefficient, which represents the resistance to the flow from the aquifer to the horizontal arms, were analyzed. Simulation results showed that, with given proposed pumping rate conditions, the drawdown in the caisson exceeded maximum drawdown constraints in the study site and the adjustment of the pumping rate at each well is needed. The drawdown is affected by the hydraulic conductivity of the main aquifer and the well flow coefficient, which means the profound field investigation of the study site is needed to accurately estimate the efficiency of riverbank filtration through radial collector wells.

Sand dam is a flow barrier commonly built on small or medium size sandy rivers to accumulate sand and store excess water for later use or increase the water table. The effectiveness of sand dam in increasing the water table and the amount of extractable groundwater is tested using numerical models. Two models are developed to test the hypothesis. The first model is to simulate the groundwater flow in a pseudo-natural aquifer system with the hydraulically connected river. The second model, a modified version of the first model, is constructed with a sand dam, which raises the riverbed by 2 m. In both models, the effect of groundwater abstraction is tested by varying the pumping rate. As the model results show the groundwater after the construction of the sand dam has increased significantly and the amount of extractable groundwater is also increased by many folds. Most importantly, in the second model, unlike the pseudo-natural aquifer system, the groundwater abstraction does not have a significant effect on the water table.
Geostatistical methods were used for the groundwater flow analysis in a heterogeneous anisotropic aquifer. This study area is located at Sonbul-myeon in Hampyong-gun of Cheonnam Province which is a hydrogeological project area of KORES(Korea Resources Cooperation). Linear regression analysis shows that the topographic elevation and groundwater level of this area have very high correlation. Groundwater-level contour maps produced by ordinary kriging and cokringing have large differences in mountain areas, but small differences in hill and plain areas near the West Sea. Comparing two maps on the basis of an elevation contour map, a groundwater-level contour map using cokriging is more accurate. Analyzing the groundwater flow on two groundwater-level contour maps, the groundwater of study area flows from the high mountain areas to the plain areas near the West Sea. To verify the enffectiveness of geostatistical methods for the groundwater flow analysis in a heterogeneous anisotropic aquifer, the flow directions of groundwater were measured at two groundwater boreholes by a groundwater flowmeter system(model 200 $GeoFlo^{R}$). The measured flow directions of groundwater almost accord with those estimated on two groundwater-level contour maps produced by geostatistical methods.

In the processes of hydrological cycle, when precipitation reaches the ground surface, water may become surface runoff or infiltrate into soil and then possibly further percolate into groundwater aquifer. A part of the water is returned to the atmosphere through evaporation and transpiration. Soil moisture dynamics driven climate fluctuations plays a key role in the simulation of water transfer among ground surface, unsaturated zone and aquifer. In this study, a one-layer canopy and a four-layer soil representation is used for a coupled soil-vegetation modeling scheme. A non-zero hydraulic diffusivity between the deepest soil layer modeled and groundwater table is used to couple the numerical equations of soil moisture and groundwater dynamics. Simulation of runoff generation is based on the mechanism of both infiltration excess overland flow and saturation overland flow nested in a numerical model of soil moisture dynamics. Thus, a comprehensive hydrological model integrating canopy, soil zone and aquifer has been developed to evaluate water resources in the plain region of Huaihe River basin in East China and simulate water transfer among precipitation, surface water, soil moisture and groundwater. The newly developed model is capable of calculating hydrological components of surface runoff, evapotranpiration from soil and aquifer, and groundwater recharge from precipitation and discharge into rivers. Regional parameterization is made by using two approaches. One is to determine most parameters representing specific physical values on the basis of characterization of soil properties in unsaturated zone and aquifer, and vegetations. The other is to calibrate the remaining few parameters on the basis of comparison between measured and simulated streamflow and groundwater tables. The integrated modeling system was successfully used in the Linhuanji catchment of Huaihe plain region. Study results demonstrate that (1) on the average 14.2% of precipitation becomes surface runoff and baseflow during a ten-year period from 1986 to 1995 and this figure fluctuates between only 3.0% in drought years of 1986, 1988, 1993 and 1994 to 24.0% in wet year of 1991; (2) groundwater directly deriving from precipitation recharge is about 15.0% t of the precipitation amount, and (3) about half of the groundwater recharge flows into rivers and loses through evaporation.

Hydraulic property of fissured aquifers often depends on geologic structure which acts main channel of groundwater flow. We treated theories of linear flow related to vertical geologic structure. Then, we analyzed the result of two pumping tests conducted in Okmyeong-ri area (Kyeongbook province) using fractal model and found hydraulic characteristic of the fissured aquifer in this area. According to the pump test analyses, groundwater flow around the holes (pumping well D9; observation wells C3 and D7) of test 1 is linear. and is controlled by vertical geologic structure with infinite length and infinitesimally small width. On the other hand, around the hole D10 (pumping well) of test 2, groundwater flow is pseudo-radial (n=1.9) or radial (n=2). Thus, the characteristic of fractured aquifer often shows variable groundwater flow spatially and temporally.
