  • Recently, possibility of low protein diet with high energy level for improvement of fish production has been proposed in several fish species, especially under restricted feeding rate, fish responded better on high energy diet than low energy diet McGoogan and Gatlin (1999) stressed another benefit of low protein diet with high energy for fish production, in terms of reduction of nitrogen waste from fish metabolism However, others reported no effect of high lipid in feed on performance of fish (Jover et al. 1999). This was probably because that energy availability o requirement for fish varied based on fish species, protein content or quality in feed, rearing water temperature condition and feeding ration. • Rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli) juveniles were fed with the diets containing 0 (control and sham), 5, 10 and 15 ppm of 3,5,3'-triiodo-L-thyronine ($T_3$) for 50 days to assess the effect of the hormone on the change of physiological condition, growth and survival rate, fish were fed the commercial diet by hand to satiation 2 times per day. After 50 days, food intake, feed efficiency, thyroid cell height (TCH), abnormality, proximate body composition, growth, condition factor and survival rate were also examined. The food intake and the feed efficiency of S. schlegeli fed with diet containing 10 ppm of $T_3$ was significantly higher than those of fishes fed with the other diets. On the final day of experiment, atrophy of thyroid gland was observed in fish administered with 10 and 15 ppm of $T_3$. $T_3$increased slightly the abnormality according to the increase of $T_3$dose. The whole body proximate analyses indicated that the fishes administrated with 15 ppm of $T_3$ were the highest in protein content and were the lowest in lipid, but in ash content were there a significant effects of $T_3$. The growth of S. schlegeli fed with a diet containing 10 ppm of $T_3$ was significantly higher than that of control. The condition factor was not related to administered $T_3$ content. $T_3$ slightly improved the survival rate of juvenile S. schlegeli, and the survival rate of fish administered with 10 ppm was significantly higher than that of sham-control but was lower than that of control.

  • The body color of fish fed were improved to be clearer by feeding the bitterling an artificial diet containing different carotenoids. The possibilities of using the bitterling, Rhodeus uyekii, an aboriginal fish of Korea, were studied by feeding the experimental diets supplemented with the various carotenoids (astaxanthin, lutein, and $\beta$-carotene). Amount of total carotenoids in the groups of fish fed by supplementation carotenoids were relatively higher than the control group of fish fed by no supplementation carotenoids. Especially, the group of fish fed by lutein supplementation diet showed most clarity in body color. The group of fish fed by astaxanthin supplementation diet showed the highest growth while the group of fish fed by lutein or $\beta$-carotene supplementation diet showed no significant different comparing to the control group of fish. The results from this study indicated that the bitterling could be a new ornamental fish as long as provided with the proper diet and culture condition.

  • This project analyzes distinct qualities of pearl cultured in Tongyeong by physical, chemical and optical test. The result is to provide scientific data for the value of pearl from Korean seawater. It divides one year pearl, which is used as a sample in the project, into white, natural blue and yellow gold colors, and then it has been divided into A, B and C based on the quality of the last results. A chemical experiment demonstrates that the higher quality has lower protein content of less than 10%. In another test called heavy metal content test, there is no big difference among classes. In the characterization of spectroscopy, it shows 280 nm peak indicated the conchiolin. It is clear that 407 nm, 430 nm and 460 nm peak are White group that are not in processed condition.

  • Experimental cohorts of Mugil cephalus were divided into 5 groups : seawater~normal feed (SWN), acclimation to freshwater~normal feed (GFWN), acclimation to freshwater~salt feed (Gf\iVS), freshwater. normal feed (FWN) and freshwater-salt feed (f\iVS). Growth was faster in the SWN, Gf\iVS, and GFWN groups than in the f\iVS and FWN groups. Condition factor did not differ among the groups. Survival (92 %) of the juveniles was the highest in the Gf\iVS group; however, the others showed no significant difference. Moisture of FWN group was significantly higher than that of SWN group (P < 0.05). Potassium concentration was significantly higher in the SWN group than that of others (P < 0.05). It was highest (30 mmolfl) among the cohort of SWN.

  • The effect of sudden changes of water temperature (WT) on the survival rate and physiological responses of the red spotted grouper (Epinephelus akaara) were examined by manipulating WT control system for 9 days. Experimental condition was divided in two different regimes at low (from $10^{\circ}C$ to $4^{\circ}C$, decreased $1^{\circ}C/d$) and high (from $28^{\circ}C$ to $34^{\circ}C$, increased $1^{\circ}C/d$) WT. Survival rate of experimental fishes were observed, and determined the changes of hematological characteristics by analyzing plasma levels of cortisol, glucose, total protein, and electrolytes ($Na^+$, $Cl^-$, $K^+$). No mortality was observed until low WT $6^{\circ}C$ (144 h) and high WT $32^{\circ}C$ (96 h), and 100% mortality was observed at low WT $4^{\circ}C$ (216 h) and high WT $35^{\circ}C$ (171 h). Plasma levels of cortisol and glucose increased rapidly as decreasing WT, and the loss of swimming ability and respiration response was observed at low WT $7^{\circ}C$ and high WT $34^{\circ}C$ conditions.

  • Reproductive biology (sexual maturity and reproductive cycle) of starry flounder Platichthys stellatus were examined by histological methods. From March 2004 to February 2005, 144 females and males were sampled. Gonadosomatic index (GSI) of female and male were peaked in May and February, respectively. Monthly changes of hepatosomotic index (HSI) showed a negative correlationwith those of the GSI. Changes of condition factor (CF) in female were correlated with gonad maturation, while that of male were no difference all the year round. Based on monthly GSI and gonadal development the reproductive cycle of starry flounder could be divided into four stages: growing stage (September to November), maturation stage (September to February), ripe and spent stage (March to May), and recovery and resting stage (June to August). Biological minimum size of female was 1,074 g. The relationship between fecundity (F) and body weight (BW) of the fish was expressed as $F\;=\;455.86BW^{1.2006}$.

  • This study was conducted to find out biological response of Manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum exposed to lead (Pb). Experimental period was four weeks. Experimental groups were composed of one control condition and three lead exposure conditions (0.25, 0.50 and 1.00 mg/l). The results of the study confirmed that lead induces reduction of survival rate and oxygen consumption rate and histopathology of organ structure of the bivalve. Oxygen consumption rate was observed exposure groups lower than control decline by 25%-72%. Histological analysis of organ system illustrated expansion of hemolymph sinus, disappearance of epidermal layer and degeneration of connective tissue layer of the mantle. Also, histological degenerations as epithelial necrosis and hyperplasia of mucous cells are recognized in the gill and it was observed expansion of hemolymph sinus, disruption of epithelial layer, decrease of mucous cell and degeneration of connective tissue layer in the foot. In the digestive diverticulum, it was showed atrophy of basophilic cell and degeneration of epithelial cell in the digestive tubules, and as the concentration of lead increased the accumulation of lipofuscin increased.

  • This study was conducted to find out the changes of survival, respiration and organ structure of Tegillarca granosa exposed to copper (Cu). Experimental period was four weeks. Experimental groups were composed of one control condition and three copper exposure conditions (0.125, 0.250 and 0.500 mg/L). The results of the study confirmed that copper induces reduction of survival rate and respiration rate and histopathology of organ structure of the bivalve. In the copper concentration of 0.500 mg/L, mortality was 66.7% after Cu exposure of 4 weeks. Respiration rate was observed exposure groups lower than control decline by 18%. Histological analysis of organ system illustrated degeneration of epithelial layer and connective tissue layer of the mantle. Also, histological degenerations as epithelial atrophy and disappearance of lateral cilia are recognized in the gill and it was observed expansion of hemolymph sinus, disruption of epithelial layer, acidification of mucous and degeneration of muscle fiber bundles in the foot. In the digestive diverticulum, it was showed atrophy and destruction of basophilic cell and epithelial cell in the digestive tubules.
