  • The purpose of this study is an optimization of gate valve made by forging method instead of welding method. In this study, we propose an optimal shape design to improve the mechanical efficiency of gate valve. In order to optimize more efficiently and reliably, the meta-modeling technique has been developed to solve such a complex problems combined with the DACE (Design and Analysis of Computer Experiments). The DACE modeling, known as the one of Kriging interpolation, is introduced to obtain the surrogate approximation model of the function. Also, we prove reliability of the DACE model's application to gate valve by computer simulations using FEM(Finite Element Method).

  • In this paper, a new smoothing approximation to the l1 exact penalty function for constrained optimization problems (COP) is presented. It is shown that an optimal solution to the smoothing penalty optimization problem is an approximate optimal solution to the original optimization problem. Based on the smoothing penalty function, an algorithm is presented to solve COP, with its convergence under some conditions proved. Numerical examples illustrate that this algorithm is efficient in solving COP.

  • We present a new dual sequential approximate optimization (SAO) algorithm called SD-TDQAO (sequential dual two-point diagonal quadratic approximate optimization). This algorithm solves engineering optimization problems with a nonlinear objective and nonlinear inequality constraints. The two-point diagonal quadratic approximation (TDQA) was originally non-convex and inseparable quadratic approximation in the primal design variable space. To use the dual method, SD-TDQAO uses diagonal quadratic explicit separable approximation; this can easily ensure convexity and separability. An important feature is that the second-derivative terms of the quadratic approximation are approximated by TDQA, which uses only information on the function and the derivative values at two consecutive iteration points. The algorithm will be illustrated using mathematical and topological test problems, and its performance will be compared with that of the MMA algorithm.

  • The configuration optimization is a structural optimization method which includes the coordinates of a structure as well as the sectional properties in the design variable set. Effective reduction of the weight of discrete structures can be obrained by changing the geometry while satisfying stress, Ei;er bickling, displacement, and frequency constraints, etc. However, the nonlinearity due to the configuration variables may cause the difficulties of the convergence and expensive computational cost. An efficient approximation method for the configuration optimization has been developed to overcome the difficulties. The method approximates the constraint functions based onthe second-order Taylor series expansion with reciprocal design variables. The Hessian matrix is approzimated from the information on previous design points. The developed algotithms are coded and the examples are solved.

  • For the efficient reliability analysis, Bi-direction two-point approximation(BTPA) method is developed which solves shortcomings of conventional two-point approximation(TPA) methods that generate an approximate surface with low accuracy or sometimes do an unstable approximate surface. The conventional reliability based design optimization(RBDO) methods require high computational cost compared with the deterministic design optimization(DO) methods. To overcome the computational inefficiency of RBDO, the approximate reliability analysis approaches on the TPA surface are proposed. Using these FORM and SORM analysis strategies, multi-point aerodynamic-structure interacted shape design optimizations with uncertainty are performed very efficiently.

  • Gradient-based optimization methods are inefficient in applications which require expensive function evaluations, and useless in applications where objective and/or constraint functions are 'noisy' due to modeling and cumulative numerical inaccuracy since gradient evaluation results cannot be reliable. Moreover, it is difficult to be integrated with commercial analysis software, and they cannot be employed when only experimental analysis results are available. In this research an optimization program based on a response surface method has been developed to overcome the aforementioned difficulties. Various methods for design of experiments and new proposed approximation models are implemented in the program. The effectiveness of the optimization program is tested on several test problems and results are discussed.

  • This paper presents an approximate reanalysis methods of structures based on substructuring for an effective optimization of large-scale structural systems. In most optimal design procedures the analysis of the structure must be repeated many times. In particular, one of the main obstacles in the optimization of structural systems are involved high computational cost and expended long time in the optimization of large-scale structures. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate efficiently the structural behavior of new designs using information from previous ones, without solving basic equations for successive modification in the optimal design. The proposed reanalysis procedure is combined Taylor series expansions which is a local approximation and reduced basis method which is a global approximation based on substructuring. This technique is to choose each of the terms of Taylor series expansions as the basis vector of reduced basis method in substructuring system which is one of the most effective analysis of large -scale structures. Several numerical examples illustrate the effectiveness of the solution process.

  • Function approximation is one of the most important and active research fields in design optimization. Accurate function approximations can reduce the repetitive computational effort fur system analysis. So this study presents an enhanced two-point diagonal quadratic approximation method. The proposed method is based on the Two-point Diagonal Quadratic Approximation method. But unlike TDQA, the suggested method has two quadratic terms, the diagonal term and the correction term. Therefore this method overcomes the disadvantage of TDQA when the derivatives of two design points are same signed values. And in the proposed method, both the approximate function and derivative values at two design points are equal to the exact counterparts whether the signs of derivatives at two design points are the same or not. Several numerical examples are presented to show the merits of the proposed method compared to the other forms used in the literature.

  • The concept of robust design was introduced by Dr. G. Taguchi in the late 1940s, and his technique has become commonly known as the Taguchi method or the robust design. In this research, a robust design procedure for microgyroscope is suggested based on the kriging and optimization approaches. The kriging interpolation method is introduced to obtain the surrogate approximation model of true function. Robustness is calculated by the kriging model to reduce real function calculations. For this, objective function is represented by the probability of success, thus facilitating robust optimization. The statistics such as mean and variance are obtained based on the reliable kriging model and the second-order statistical approximation method.

  • Based on the exponential intervening variable, a new two-point approximation method is presented. This introduces the shifting level into each exponential intervening variable to avoid the lack of def inition of the conventional exponential intervening variables due to zero-or negative-valued design variables. Then a new quadratic approximation whose Hessian matrix has only diagonal elements of different values is proposed in terms of these intervening variables. These diagonal elements are determined in a closed form that corrects the typical error in the approximate gradient of the TANA series due to the lack of definition of exponential type intervening variables and their incomplete second-order terms. Also, a correction coefficient is multiplied to the pre-determined quadratic term to match the value of approximate function with that of the previous point. Finally, in order to show the numerical performance of the proposed method, a sequential approximate optimizer is developed and applied to solve six typical design problems. These optimization results are compared with those of TANA-3. These comparisons show that the proposed method gives more efficient and reliable results than TANA-3.
