The information on local stress acting in a bridge is required in many occasions such as fatigue assessment. The analysis by beam elements cannot yield this class of information adequately, while the finite element modeling of an entire long-span bridge by shell elements is impractical. In the present study, the hybrid modeling is tried out: only part of a bridge in which the point of interest is located is discretized by shell elements and the remaining part is modeled by beam elements. By solving a simple box girder problem, the effectiveness of this approach is discussed. This technique is then applied to the Rama IX Bridge for local stress evaluation. The numerical results compare very well with the results of a full-scale static loading test. The present research thus offers a practical yet accurate technique for the stress analysis of a long-span cable-stayed bridge.
The dynamic responses of a PSC bridge for automated guide-way transit system are investigated by analytical approach of bridge-vehicle interaction. In this study, the dynamic responses, concerned with a spall on the surface of bridge are emphasized. A simply supported pre-stressed concrete bridge is adopted as a numerical example. Dynamics of three-dimensional dynamic interaction system between bridges and vehicles is considered in this study. The FE method and modal analysis is used for modeling a bridge for dynamic response analysis. An AGT vehicle is idealized as a model with 11DOFs including lateral motion. It was found that the dynamic responses of bridge can be affected by a spall of surface. Especially, the vibrations are increased much more when a spall is exist.
This paper presents a novel method to carry out monitoring of transport infrastructure such as pavements and bridges through the analysis of vehicle accelerations. An algorithm is developed for the identification of dynamic vehicle-bridge interaction forces using the vehicle response. Moving force identification theory is applied to a vehicle model in order to identify these dynamic forces between the vehicle and the road and/or bridge. A coupled half-car vehicle-bridge interaction model is used in theoretical simulations to test the effectiveness of the approach in identifying the forces. The potential of the method to identify the global bending stiffness of the bridge and to predict the pavement roughness is presented. The method is tested for a range of bridge spans using theoretical simulations and the influences of road roughness and signal noise on the accuracy of the results are investigated.
Passive control of the flutter condition of suspension bridges using a combined vertical and torsional tuned mass damper (TMD) system is presented. The proposed TMD system has two degrees of freedom, which are tuned close to the frequencies corresponding to vertical and torsional symmetric modes of the bridge which get coupled during flutter. The bridge-TMD system is analyzed for finding critical wind speed for flutter using a finite element approach. Thomas Suspension Bridge is analyzed as an illustrative example. The effectiveness of the TMD system in increasing the critical flutter speed of the bridge is investigated through a parametric study. The results of the parametric study led to the optimization of some important parameters such as mass ratio, TMD damping ratio, tuning frequency, and number of TMD systems which provide maximum critical flutter wind speed of the suspension bridge.
A finite strip method is developed for fatigue reliability analysis of steel highway bridges. Flat shell strips are employed to model concrete slab and steel girders, while a connection strip is formed using penalty function method to take into account eccentricity of girder top flange. At each sampling point with given slab thickness and modulus ratio, a finite strip analysis of the bridge under fatigue truck is performed to calculate stress ranges at fatigue-prone detail, and fatigue failure probability is evaluated following the AASHTO approach or the LEFM approach. After the failure probability is integrated over all sampling points, fatigue reliability of the bridge is determined.
Incheon bridge project is to construct total 12km long bridges on the sea consist of 800m span length cable stayed bridge, approach bridge and viaduct bridge based on LRFD design specification. To design pile foundations by RCD of each bridge unit, total 4 number of preliminary full scale pile load tests with Osterberg cell method were carried out on the piles for testing. The test load was planned to more than the expected design ultimate capacity and about 29,000tons maximum load was recorded. From the interpretation of test results, design parameters are evaluated and applied to the design. Preliminary pile load test plan and detailed execution of pile load tests are introduced and summarized. The resistance factors are presented for pile design of Incheon Bridge Project in LRFD considering variation of ground conditions and number of test piles.
In the recent times, dimensions of heavy load carrying vehicle have changed significantly incorporating structural flexibility in vehicle body. The present paper outlines a procedure for the estimation of bridge response statistics considering structural bending modes of the vehicle. Bridge deck roughness has been considered to be non homogeneous random process in space. Influence of pre cambering of bridge surface and settlement of approach slab on the dynamic behavior of the bridge has been studied. A parametric study considering vehicle axle spacing, mass, speed, vehicle flexibility, deck unevenness and eccentricity of vehicle path have been conducted. Dynamic amplification factor (DAF) of the bridge response has been obtained for several of combination of bridge-vehicle parameters. The present study reveals that flexible modes of vehicle can reduce dynamic response of the bridge to the extent of 30-37% of that caused by rigid vehicle model. However, sudden change in the bridge surface profile leads to significant amount of increment in the bridge dynamic response even if flexible bending modes remain active. The eccentricity of vehicle path and flexural/torsional rigidity ratios plays a significant role in dynamic amplification of bridge response.
The cable component of cable-stayed bridges is gradually impacted by weather conditions, vehicle loads, and material corrosion. The stayed cable is a critical load-carrying part that closely affects the operational stability of a cable-stayed bridge. Damaged cables might lead to the bridge collapse due to their tension capacity reduction. Thus, it is necessary to develop structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques that accurately identify damaged cables. In this work, a combinational identification method of three efficient techniques, including statistical analysis, clustering, and neural network models, is proposed to detect the damaged cable in a cable-stayed bridge. The measured dataset from the bridge was initially preprocessed to remove the outlier channels. Then, the theory and application of each technique for damage detection were introduced. In general, the statistical approach extracts the parameters representing the damage within time series, and the clustering approach identifies the outliers from the data signals as damaged members, while the deep learning approach uses the nonlinear data dependencies in SHM for the training model. The performance of these approaches in classifying the damaged cable was assessed, and the combinational identification method was obtained using the voting ensemble. Finally, the combination method was compared with an existing outlier detection algorithm, support vector machines (SVM). The results demonstrate that the proposed method is robust and provides higher accuracy for the damaged cable detection in the cable-stayed bridge.
This paper presents a high frequency design approach for improving efficiency over a wide load range in the self-driven phase-shifted full-bridge converters for server power systems. In the proposed approach, a detailed ZVS analysis of the lagging leg switches in both the continuous conduction mode (CCM) and the discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) is presented. The optimum dead time and the determination of the appropriate operation mode are given for high efficiency according to the load conditions. Finally, the optimum operation conditions are defined to achieve a high-efficiency. A laboratory prototype operating at 80 kHz, rated 1 kW (12 V-83.3 A), is built to verify proposed theoretical analysis and evaluations. The experimental results show that the maximum efficiency is achieved as 95% and 83.5% at full load and 5% load conditions, respectively.
DangSan Bridge of Seoul Subway No 2 was rebuilt by safety reason. From Dec 1996 to Dec 1999 we were in charge of permanent way design of this rebuilt project. Especially we applied maintenance free system on the bridge by Cologne Egg alternative (ALT1) base plate and CWR (Continuous Welded Rail) by ZLR(Zero Longitudinal Restraint) for 125m (south approach section), 120m long(north approach section). This thesis generally introduce for CWR by ZLR which was first adapted CWR system in Korea.
