  • In this study, the properties of polyurethane-polydimethylsiloxane (PU-PDMS) hybrid foams containing different types and contents of physical blowing agents (PBAs) were investigated. Two types of blowing agents, namely physical blowing agents and thermally expandable microspheres (TEM), were applied. The apparent density was measured using precisely cut foam samples, and the pore size was measured using image software. In addition, the microstructure of the foam was confirmed via scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The thermal conductivities related to the microstructures of the different foams were compared. When 0.5 phr of the hydrocarbon-based PBA was added, the apparent density and pore size of the foam were minimal; however, the pore size was larger than that of neat foam. In contrast, the addition of 3 phr of TEM effectively reduced both the apparent density and pore size of the PBAs. The increase in resin viscosity owing to TEM could enhance bubble production stability, leading to the formation of more uniform and smaller pores. These results indicate that TEM is a highly efficient PBA that can be employed to decrease the weight and pore size of PU-PDMS hybrid foams.

  • Liquid crystalline (LC) poly(ethylene terephthalate-co-2(3)-chloro-1,4-phenylene terephthalate) (50/50, mole/mole) [PECPT] was synthesized and blended with polycarbonate (PC). LC properties of PECPT and thermal, morphological, and rheological behaviors of the PECPT/PC blend were studied. PECPT showed the nematic LC phase and much longer relaxation time than poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET). The apparent melt viscosity of PECPT was one third of that of FET. An abrupt torque change was observed during the blending process due to the orientation of LC domains. For the blends containing 10~30 wt% of PECPT, the complex viscosities were higher than that of PC. As PECPT content increases above 40 wt%, shear thinning was observed. The lowest complex viscosity was obtained at 40~50 wt%. Transesterification of PECPT and PC was confirmed by the selective chemical degradation of carbonate groups in PC.

  • The Valence(Z) of positively and negatively charged alumina particles in the dilute suspensions was analyzed with the electrical conductivity of the suspensions. The mobility of negative particles was lower than that of positive particles at a similar Z value because of the stronger effect of chemical bonding over the hydrated particle surfaces. The apparent viscosity of acidic suspensions of 1-40 vol % solid was lower than that of basic suspensions. This result was discussed based on the three important effects of the valence, concentration and nature of hydrated surface of alumina particles. The density of alumina compacts consolidated by filtration through gypsum molds became lower for the basic suspensions than for the acidic suspensions. This result was correlated to the properties of the colloidal alumina suspensions.

  • The flow properties of sulfated polysaccharides purified from the ascidian Halocynthia roretzi tunic were investigated. The sulfated polysaccfarides produced aqueous solutions of low apparent viscosity with pseudoplastic flow behavior. The respective activation energies of TCA-treated and TCA-nontreated solutions were $2.2248{\times}10^4\;and\;1.442{\times}10^4J/kg{\cdot}mol$ at a 150L/s shear rate. The viscosity of the sulfated polysaccharides solution was increased by the addition of sugar, while it was not changed by the addition of NaCl.

  • This study investigated the effects of galacomannans (guar gum, tara gum, and locust bean gum) on the rheological properties of buckwheat starch pastes under steady and dynamic shear conditions. The power law and Casson models were applied to describe the flow behavior of the buckwheat starch and galactomannan mixtures. The values of the apparent viscosity (${\eta}_{a,100}$), consistency index (K), and yield stress (${\sigma}_{oc}$) for buckwheat starch-galactomannan mixtures were significantly greater than those for the control, indicating that there was a high synergism of the starch with galactomannans. The magnitudes of storage modulus (G') and loss modulus (G") for the starch-galactomannan mixtures increased with increasing frequency (${\omega}$). The dynamic moduli (G', G"), and complex viscosity (${\eta}^*$) for the buckwheat starch-galactomannan mixtures were significantly higher than those for the control.

  • The bacterial cellulose (BC) production by a wildstrain Acetobacter xylinum BPR2001 and that by its acetannonproducing mutant, EPI, were compared in a jar fermentor. EPI produced about $28\%$ less BC than the wild-strain. The apparent difference in the cultivation of the two strains was the viscosity increase in the culture broth that was closely associated with acetan production. Increasing the viscosity of the culture broth of EPI by adding agar led to the formation of relatively small and uniform BC pellets, and BC production consequently became two-fold higher than that in the absence of agar and was almost equal to that by BPR2001. Therefore, acetan has an important role in BC production by inducing physical changes in the culture broth of the wild-type strain.

  • Apparent molal valumes ${\phi}_v$ and relative viscosities ${\eta}_r$ of aqueous solutions of anilinium chloride have been determined at two degree intervals from 20 to $50^{\circ}C$ in the molar concentration range 0.003 < C < 0.4. The results are discussed in terms of partial molal volumes $\={V}^{\circ}$, deviations from the Debye-H$\''{u}$ckel limiting law, partial molal expansibilities $\={E}^{\circ}$, viscosity B coefficients calculated from the Jones-Dole equation, and energy of activation for viscous flow. In aqueous solution, anilinium chloride was found to be a weak structure-maker due to its hydrophobic group.

  • The steady and dynamic shear rheological properties of traditional kochujang fermented at three different temperatures (20${^circ}C$, 25${^circ}C$ and 30${^circ}C$) were studied. Flow of kochujang samples showed time dependence, which was quantitatively described by the Weltman model, Kochujang samples were highly shear thinning fluids (n=0.25~0.27) with large magnitudes of Casson yield stresses (1.09~1.21 kPa). Consistency index (K) and apparent viscosity (${\eta}_{a,20}$) increased with increase in fermentation temperature of kochujang. Storage (G') and loss (G") moduli increased with increase in frequency (ω), while complex viscosity (${\eta}^{\ast}$) decreased. Based on dynamic shear data, kochujang samples exhibit structural properties similar to weak gels. The complex and steady shear viscosities at different fermentation temperatures followed the Cox-Merz superposition rule with the application of the shift factor (a=0.011~0.016).

  • The density and the viscosity of aqueous PEO solutions are observed with the several concentrations of PEO at 20 ℃. The effects of urea on them are also observed. The apparent and the partial specific volumes of PEO are calculated from the density data, which result that the polymer-polymer interaction is dominating in the binary aqueous PEO solutions, while the polymer-solvent interaction is dominating in the ternary aqueous urea-PEO solutions. It is explained by the urea induced breakage of the structured water originated from the hydrophobic interactions and the binding of the urea to the PEO chain. The concentration dependence of relative viscosity and the density dependence of fluidity is also discussed with the concept of the polymersolvent and the polymer-polymer interactions of aqueous urea-PEO solutions.

  • Rheological properties of sweet potato starch (SPS)-glucose composites (5%, w/w) at different concentrations (0, 10, 20, and 30%, w/w) of glucose were investigated in steady and dynamic shear. The steady shear rheological properties of SPS-glucose composites were determined from rheological parameters for power law and Casson flow models. At $25^{\circ}C$ all the samples showed a pronounced shear-thinning behaviors (n=0.29-0.37) with high Casson yield stress. In general, the presence of glucose resulted in the decrease in consistence index (K), apparent viscosity (${\eta}_{a,100}$), and yield stress (${\sigma}_{oc}$). Storage (G') and loss (G") moduli increased with an increase in frequency ($\omega$), while complex viscosity (${\eta}*$) decreased. Dynamic moduli (G', G", and ${\eta}*$) of the SPS-glucose composites at higher glucose concentrations (20 and 30%) were higher than those of the control (0% glucose) and also increased with increasing glucose concentration from 10 to 30%. The effect of glucose on steady and dynamic shear rheological properties of the SPS pastes appears to greatly depend on glucose concentration in the range of 10-30%.
