  • The purpose of this study is to examine how Bang's Scalp Acupunture affects the aphasia in stroke patients. Subject was 1 stroke patient who was admitted at Daejon University Oriental Hospital. The degree of aphasia was measured by the Daegu Aphasia Battery. The result showed that a comparative study of pre Bang's Scalp Acupunture & post Bang's Scalp Acupunture, aphasia was improved. On the basis of one case result, Bang's Scalp Acupunture is effective in treating poststroke aphasia. Serial studies must be done and requested in the aspects of improvement contrast, improvement durancy and the improvement difference on the healing period.

  • I studied some important medical liter atures in order to examine the cause of Aphasia and found out some facts as follows : 1. Hwang Je Nae Kgong(黃帝內經) is more referred exogenous causes of disease of Aphasia than endogenous causes of disease. 2. Among many causes of Aphasia, exogenous causes of disease was cinsidered to be most common in Soh Shi Je Byong Won Hu chong Rhon(巢氏諸病源喉總論), which has had a wide influence down the ages. 3. Chon Keum Yo Bang(千金要方), Chi Tae Bhi Yo(外臺秘要), Tae Pyong Song Hye Bang(太平聖惠方), Song Je Chong Rok(聖濟總綠). Bu In Yang Bang(婦人良方) and so forth had been quoted from Hwang Je Nae Kyong and Soh Shi Je Byong Won Hu Chong Ron(巢氏諸病源喉總論). 4. In the ming dynasty had been quoted non-exo-endogenous causes of disease and the Kinds of Aphasia and prescription. 5. In the Choeun dynasty and the Ching dynasty, exogenous causes of disease was confined to the quotation of the books referred to above as well, but endogenous causes of disease was developed. 6. Today is refered kidney and Aphasia. The cause of Aphasia obtained was as follows. The exogenous cause of disease is wind, wind and cold, wind and heat. The endogenous cause of disease is pregnancy, heart block of postpartum, weakness of heart and kidney, impairment of seven modes of emotions, stagnation of phlegm and phlegm-fire, hemorrhage. • Objectives: This study presents two cases of patients with post-stroke global aphasia who were treated with scalp acupuncture with electrical stimulation.Method: The two patients were treated by scalp acupuncture with electrical stimulation six times a week. The degree of aphasia was measured via the Korean version of the western aphasia battery (K-WAB).Results: After treatment, aphasia was improved in both cases (autism-spectrum quotient [AQ] scores increased from 13.7 to 37.1 and from 4.1 to 18.4 in the two patients). Conclusion: Based on the results of these two cases, scalp acupuncture could be effective in treating post-stroke global aphasia.

  • Objective: The aim of this case report was to present the effects of traditional Korean medicine on a patient with Broca's aphasia associated with cerebral hemorrhage after middle cerebral artery infarction. Methods: The Korean version of the Western Aphasia Battery (K-WAB) and the Evaluation of Articulator Performance were used to evaluate the language functions of the patient. Herbal medication and acupuncture were administered to improve the patient's symptoms. Results: The inpatient and outpatient treatments improved the patient's symptoms. The aphasia quotient (AQ) score of the K-WAB test before treatment was 6.4, but it increased to 21.4 after treatment. The Evaluation of Articulator Performance score improved by 0.0 points before treatment, by 1.0 points after 9 days of treatment, and by 1.5 points after 42 days of treatment. Conclusions: This case report suggest that Korean medical therapy can be effective in improving the language functions of patients with Broca's aphasia.

  • Motor aphasia is an affection frequently caused by insult of the left middle cerebral artery and usually accompanied by a large lesion involving the Broca's area and the adjacent motor and premotor areas. Therefore, a patient with motor aphasia commonly shows articulatory disturbances due to failure of the motor programing of speech sound. Objective assessment and treatment of phonologic programing is one of the important aspects of speech therapy in aphasic patients. We analyzed the speech disorders acompanied with motor aphasia in a 45-year-old man using a computerized sound spectrograph, Visi-$Pitch{\circledR}$, and Multi-Dimensional Voice $Program{\circledR}$. We concluded that a computerized speech analysis system is a useful tool to visualize and quantitatively analyse the severity and progression of dysarthria, and the effect of speech therapy.

  • Seizure can be categorized in various ways. Seizures are divided into those that are generalized and those affecting only part of the brain (focal seizure). Focal (partial) seizures are subdivided into simple seizures and complex seizures. Simple focal seizures may be manifested by focal motor, sensory or autonomic symptoms and consciousness is preserved. The above symptoms may be preceded, accompanied or followed by, and consciousness is impaired in, complex focal seizures. Ictal aphasia can arise from epileptiform discharge on cortical language areas. Generally next to the ictal aphasia, generalized seizures occur, but without losing consciousness, only aphasia takes place. A 61-year-old woman was admitted due to ictal aphasia and facial spasm, and she showed a little palpitation and was startled easily. We diagnosed her as Shimdamgiheo (心膽氣虛) and Damhwashimyo (痰火心擾), so we prescribed Chungsimondam-tang. It was effective on that case. so we report.

  • This report is about two cases of aphasia without hemiparesis after stroke. Most of aphasia after stroke accompanies hemiparesis. However, aphasia without hemiparesis after stroke occurs rarely and only a few cases have been reported. We used Korean herbal medication, acupuncture, language therapy. To evaluate speech ability we used K-WAB(Korean version of Western Aphasia Battery) and word span test. After treatment, patients' word span abilities and language abilities including reading, writing, speaking were improved. This report suggests that Korean medicine and language therapy could have a therapeutic effect for aphasia without hemiparesis after stroke.

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to prove adjacent effect of Oriental Medical Therapy on aphasia after stroke. Method: We studied patients who took K-WAB (AQ; aphasia quotient) twice during their language therapy at Kyunghee University Hospital & Oriental Medicine Hospital to retrospectively investigate the effect of Oriental medical therapy on aphasia. 18 patients with post-stroke aphasia were assigned to receive one of the following adjuncts: Group A that received language therapy with Oriental medical therapy (n=12) and Group B (n=6) that received language therapy only; AQ score of Group A was compared against Group B. Result: Total AQ score and most partial scores, except 'Contents delivery', were better in Group A. 'Total AQ score', 'Fluency', and 'Auditory verbal comprehension score' presented statistical significance. Conclusion: In this study, we demonstrated the effect of Oriental medical therapy on aphasia after stroke through AQ score improvement.

  • The purpose of this case study is to report the effectiveness of scalp acupuncture and Cheungsindodam-tang on Wernicke's aphasia in patients with left middle cerebral territory infarction. Scalp acupuncture, herbal medicine (Cheungsindodam-tang), and moxibustion were administered for 66 days to improve the patient's symptoms. The degree of improvement in symptoms was evaluated using the Korean version of the Western Aphasia Battery (K-WAB) and Mini-Mental State Examination-Korea (MMSE-K). Quality of life was evaluated with the Korean version of the Stroke and Aphasia Quality of Life Scale-39 (K-SAQOL-39). After 66 days of treatment, the aphasia quotient score of the K-WAB test increased from 19 to 34.6 after treatment. The K-SAQOL-3 score increased from 2.77 to 3.18, and the MMSE-K score increased from 4 to 21. This case report suggests that Korean medical therapy can be effective in improving the language functions of patients with Wernicke's aphasia.
