  • This paper presents the numerical study to examine characteristics of fluid flow and solute transport in a rough fracture subject to effective normal stresses. The aperture distribution is generated by using the self-affine fractal model. In order to represent a nonlinear relationship between the supported normal stress and the fracture aperture, we combine a simple mechanical model with the local flow model. The solute transport is simulated using the random walk particle following algorithm. Results of numerical simulations show that the flow is significantly affected by the geometry of aperture distribution varying with the effective normal stress level while it is slightly affected by the fractal dimension that determines the degree of the fracture surface roughness. However, solute transport is influenced by the effective normal stress as well as the fracture surface roughness.

  • The relationship between the seismic velocity and RQD was estimated using the RQD data obtained from the optical borehole image processing and drill core logs and the seismic velocity measured from the PS logging. The seismic velocity and crack aperture show a high correlation in the granite in Yuseong area and banded gneiss in Paldang area. However, such a relationship cannot be found in the sedimentary rock in Sabuk area. In the sedimentary rock of Sabbuk area, the seismic velocity shows widespread distribution especially in the 0∼20mm range of accumulated crack aperture probably because the wide distribution of fracture zone in coaly shale results in the inaccurate measurements of the crack aperture.

  • The purpose of this paper is to present the aperture cut-off filter for reduction of electromagnetic field penetration through a slot in conducting screen. The reduction characteristics of electric field penetration by the aperture cut-off filter are considered. In order to establish the concept of the aperture cut-off filter, the integral equation on the slot aperture field distribution is derived and solved by method of moments, and the reduction characteristics of penetration electric fields for the incident plane wave are calculated. The numerical results showed that the aperture cut-off filter for reduction of electric field penetration through the slot can be realized. To check the validity of the concept of an aperture cut-off filter and the theoretical analysis, the calculated electric field penetration of the metallic wall with narrow slot were compared with the experimental results.

  • We have simulated the effect of fracture characteristics on reduction of effective permeability of the fractured rocks due to in-situ bacteria growth. A nutrient is injected continuously for growth of in-situ bacteria. We used a power law for fracture length distribution and a fBm for fracture aperture spatial distribution. The results show that in-situ bacteria growth reduces the Permeability hyperbolically, but the porosity of backbone fracture does not change significantly. It shows that reduction of the permeability proceeds at faster speed for smaller value of length exponent(a) and for larger value of Hurst exponent(H). The fracture length distribution has stronger effect on speed of reduction than the aperture spatial distribution. The time needed to reduce permeability is inversely proportional to the hydraulic gradient.

  • Theoretical models that can be used to predict the range of main lobe widths and the probability distribution of the peak sidelobe levels of two-dimensionally sparse arrays are presented here. The arrays are considered to comprise microphones that are randomly positioned on a segmented grid of a given size. First, approximate expressions for the expected squared magnitude of the aperture smoothing function and the variance of the squared magnitude of the aperture smoothing function about this mean are formulated for the random arrays considered in the present study. By using the variance function, the mean value and the lower end of the range i.e., the first I percent of the mainlobe distribution can be predicted with reasonable accuracy. To predict the probability distribution of the peak sidelobe levels, distributions of levels are modeled by a Weibull distribution at each peak in the sidelobe region of the expected squared magnitude of the aperture smoothing function. The two parameters of the Weibull distribution are estimated from the means and variances of the levels at the corresponding locations. Next, the probability distribution of the peak sidelobe levels are assumed to be determined by a procedure in which the peak sidelobe level is determined as the maximum among a finite number of independent random sidelobe levels. It is found that the model obtained from the above approach predicts the probability density function of the peak sidelobe level distribution reasonably well for the various combinations of two different numbers of microphones and grid sizes tested in the present study. The application of these models to the design of random, sparse arrays having specified performance levels is also discussed.

  • This paper investigates numerically characteristics of the fluid flow in spatially correlated variable-aperture fractures under effective normal stress conditions. Spatially correlated aperture distributions are generated by using the geostaistical method (i.e. Turning Bands algorithm). In order to represent a nonlinear relationship between the effective normal stress and the fracture aperture, a simple mechanical formula is combined with a local flow model. Obtained numerical results indicate that the fluid flow is significantly affected by the geometry of aperture distribution varying according to the applied effective normal stress as well as the spatial correlation length of aperture distribution. Moreover, by using results simulated in this study, the modified Louis formula representing the relationship between the effective normal stress and the effective permeability of fracture is proposed.

  • To assess deep geological environment for the research and development of hish-level radioactive waste disposal, six boreholes of 3" in diameter were installed in two granitic areas. An areal extent of the rock block scale in the study sites was estimated by the lineament analysis from satellite images and shaded relief maps. The characterization of fracture system developed in rock block scale was carried out based on the acoustic televiewer logging in deep boreholes. In the Yuseong site, the granite rock mass was divided into the upper and lower zones at around -160m based on the probabilistic distribution characteristics of the geometric parameters such as orientation, fracture frequency, spacing and aperture size. Since the groundwater flow is dependent on the fracture system in a fractured rock mass, the correlation of the fracture frequency and cumulative aperture size to the hydraulic conductivity was also discussed.

  • This paper presents the penetrated electric fields and resonant frequencies inside a metallic enclosure with aperture excited by an external dipole source. In the theoretical analysis, integral equations for the current distribution and electric field distributions on the aperture are solved by applying Galerkin\`s method of moments. The results show that the electric fields inside metallic enclosure is maximum at the near the aperture and resonant frequencies are the same as calculated of the enclosure without aperture. To verify the theoretical analysis the electric field inside enclosure and resonant frequencies are compared with the experimental results.

  • A new cross disciplinary conception of transitional aero-optics is built up during analyzing and measuring the linkage between the hypersonic boundary layer transition on a flat plate and the jittering characteristics of the small-aperture beam through that boundary layer. Based on that conception, the Small-Aperture Beam Technique (SABT) and high-speed Imaging Camera System (ICS) used in aero-optical studies are considered as new techniques for the assessment of the hypersonic transition in the boundary layer on a flat plate. In the FD-20 gun tunnel, for the free stream parameters with Mach number of 8 and unit Reynolds number of $1{\times}10^7$ (1/m), those two optical techniques are used to measure the jitter of the small-aperture beam. At the same free stream parameters, the distribution of the heat transfer along the centerline of the flat plate is also measured by the thin film resistance gauge technique. The results show the similarity of the increase trend between the heat transfer and the jitter of the small-aperture beam in the transitional region. It helps us to surmise that it may be feasible to diagnose the transition in a hypersonic boundary layer on a flat plate by means of those above optical techniques.

  • In this paper, a shaped small-size ADE(Axially Displaced Ellipse) reflector antenna of 30 cm in diameter operating from 37 to 40 GHz was designed. The experimental antenna was manufactured, and the radiation characteristics evaluated. In the procedure of antenna design, aperture field distribution was assumed to uniform + parabolic distribution. And the variations of beam width, aperture efficiency, and sidelobe level as functions of aperture field distributions were investigated, and these results presented to be used in antenna design. The measured gain and sidelobe level of experimental antenna were found 39.9 dBi(efficiency : 61.9%) and -18.8 dB for 40 GHz. These values show good agreement in design goal of efficiency more than 60% and sidelobe level less than -20 dB.
