The purpose of this study was to investigate the using behavior of the balcony space in apartment housing for improving apartment balcony as dwelling space. For that, it is needed to identify the practical meaning of balcony space as function so balcony expansion and the using behavior of balcony space were investigated and analyzed. For this study, survey and depth-interview methods were used for data collection. The major findings were as followings: 1) Balcony expansion mainly occurred in balcony of livingroom and bedroom. Balcony expansion showed several phases according to the type of plan and function of balcony space and few residents chose expansion of all balconies. 2) The using behavior of balcony space was categorized by these various functions of balconies. It was also related to unit-plan type of apartment housing. These results can provide improvement guidelines for the balcony with the differentiation of design factors for residents.

In Korean apartment housing, balcony is semi-outdoor space for storage and drying laundry. Recently, this semi-outdoor balcony space has been merged into indoor living space with the legal permission of balcony extension. It results in disappearance of the original function of balcony in apartment housing. This study attempts to propose better utilization of balcony extension by analyzing how balcony has been extended and used, and what residents' needs are. This study asks 400 housewives living in apartment housing in Jangyu new urban area, Kyungnam. Findings are : 1) Balcony extensions are carried out in a living room, a large bedroom and a small bedroom. Most extensions are made for enlarging adjacent indoor living space; 2) Original balcony that is not extended is used for drying laundry, resting, flower pot, storing, and kid's playing; 3) The residents recognize that problems of balcony extension are the decreased heating efficiency, the reduced soundproofing effect, the loss of spare housework space, and the disappearance of buffer between indoor and outdoor space; 4) Many residents want to extend their balcony space of a small bedroom and a large bedroom and to keep the balcony space of a kitchen-dining room and a master bedroom as they are.

In an apartment house In Korea, the balcony is one of the important spaces as a buffer zone for controlling the outdoor environments such as noise, heating & cooling load, humidity etc. Because most areas of building facade in apartment building occupy the area of balcony window the sound Insulation design of It Is very Important to provide the quiet indoor environment. The aim of this research is to evaluate the sound insulation of balcony windows in apartment building by new and revised Korean Industrial Standards. We measured and studied the sound insulations of 18 balcony windows by the type of measuring methods, noise sources, correction of reverberation time in balcony and so on. The results show that the single-number quantities for sound insulation of windows are ranged from 24 dB to 30 dB.

This paper intends to predict characteristic of the balcony space composition in apartment that residents want by analyzing floorplans utilizing balcony that is directly described by housewives in competitions. According to change of age, Modern's lifestyle is variously changed and future housing life may undergo changes continuously. Therefore, development of apartment housing plans is reflected by grasping and collecting space residents desire. Purpose of study is 1) arrangement characteristic of balcony space housewives prefer 2) relations characteristic between balcony and room adjoining balcony 3) characteristic of balcony space composition Through this study, the public space that family use together prefer facing the front side and the kitchen is required to face the front side. Balcony adjoining bedroom is utilized according to user of the bedroom, and independent space like hobby room do not have distinctive relationships with adjacent space. Recent trend that space is reflected in various lifestyle of resident require needs that exercise room for well-being life and other room for various functions. Based upon the study, the results show the basic information and understanding how the plans are supposed to change, particularly to facilitate the usage of the balcony.

Even though the balcony in apartment is considered as a necessary space rather than a supplementary one nowadays, we still have many problems in balcony. The utilization of balcony space in our daily lives are as follows: Laundry, Storage, Indoor gardening, Exercise, Hobby activities etc. Despite of these various functions of balcony, balconies were designed without taking them into consideration. Therefore balcony spaces are not functional and the lines of flow get more complicated. Until now, the studies of balcony were simply done on the utilizing pattern and the satisfaction degree of residents, not on connections between balcony location and utilizing pattern. Thus, the purpose of this study is to provide improvement guidelines for the utilization of the balcony space in apartment by examining the present conditions and multiple needs.

With the increase of apartments and expansion of balcony areas, fire safety issues are becoming more important. Many researchers have conducted a lot of researches to reduce vertical flame spread in the balcony when an apartment unit is in fire. However, there have rarely been studies to use balcony area as a space for fire escape and evacuation. The study aims to examine the conditions of balcony use in apartments in order to find out prevention elements from fire escape and evacuation, and to investigate residents' satisfaction with balcony. For this study, questionnaires were collected from apartment residents and workers of architectural planning and construction companies. The findings show as follows: first, the balcony is generally used as a storage in each apartment unit nowadays. Second, when fire breaks out, many storage items could disturb residents' safe escape by blocking escape route, and easily promote to spread flame vertically in the balcony.

Remodeling of apartment houses has been increasing recently and residents have chosen to extend the balcony along with the legalization of balcony extension in apartment houses. Balcony extension provides residents more space, however, it has been investigated that balcony extension increases construction cost, heating and cooling cost and decreases sound insulation performance. Therefore, this study focuses on developing a decision making index for residents in remodeling required apartment houses. The suggested methodology involves surveying actual residents, survey analysis by AHP and decision model development using logistic regression analysis.

The purpose of this study is to find the current problems of using balcony in apartment. For this study, 255 subjects who are resided in economically sized apartment housings were selected. The major results of this study were ; 1) The front balcony was used as arrangement space a laundry drier and a flowerpot table. On the other hand, the rear balcony was used as storage space for a kind of washing powder and receptacle, kim-chi jar and storage container for food etc. 2) The most dissatisfactory respect on the balcony is the width of space. 3) The shelves were often used as storage facilities.

The purpose of this study is to present basic data that can assist on projecting the plans of use of balcony space, by identifying the problems derived from balcony remodelling for the sole purpose of securing practical space, and to further research on the role of balcony space in an apartment. The results of this study revealed a high demand on balcony space, thus the key area of research would be on developing various methods of utilizing such balcony space differing among the different types of available residential space, rather than a standardized extension of balcony space.

At the beginning the 21st century, we are interested in renewable energy especially photovoltaic. So, we have been installed PV at the building roofs so that we call it building integrated photovoltaic. But strictly speaking, installing the PV on the roof is not building integrated. There are few BIPV designs especially for balcony. In the apartment building, roof is good installing place for PV, but its area was limited. Now a day, built apartment building's heights are more and more increased so that the performance of installed PV on the roof cannot be enough to use even the public use. Thereby, we need the new space in the building to install the PV except the building roof. This study suggests the building facade balcony as a new space to install the PV with building integrated PV design. Hence, in this study, we are designed the movable BIPV shading device for apartment building balcony, and verified its performance with computer simulation. Developed device in this study can works as an electronic generation device and an overhang on the side balcony. As a result, the electronic generation performance of device contributes 15~30% to each apartment unit. The more unit width increase, the better contributed device generates.
