Objectives The objective of this study was to investigate the differences in sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, temperaments, and quality of life between panic disorder (PD) patients with and without major depressive disorder (PD+MDD and PD-MDD patients, respectively). Methods We compared 411 PD-MDD and 219 PD+MDD patients. All patients who were drug-free for at least 1 month were assessed at initial outpatient visits before the administration of medication. The following instruments were used for assessment: the NEO Personality Inventory-Neuroticism (NEO-N) ; the Temperament and Character Inventory-Harm Avoidance (TCI-HA) ; the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) ; the Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale-Short (IUS); the Anxiety Sensitivity Index-Revised (ASI-R); the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) ; the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI); the Penn State Worry Questionnaire (PSWQ) ; the Generalized Anxiety Disorder for 7 item (GAD-7) ; the Albany Panic and Phobia Questionnaire (APPQ) ; the Panic Disorder Severity Scale (PDSS) ; the Early Trauma Inventory Self Report-Short Form (ETISR-SF) ; the Scale for Suicidal Ideation (SSI) ; the World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale Abbreviated Version (WHOQOL-BREF) ; the Sheehan Disability Scale (SDS) ; and the Short Form health survey (SF-36). Results Compared to the PD-MDD patients, the PD+MDD patients were younger and more likely to be unmarried. They showed higher rates of unemployment, lower levels of education and income, younger age of onset, more previous suicide attempts, a greater incidence of agoraphobia, and more previous treatments. The PD+MDD patients showed significantly higher scores on the NEO-N, the TCI-HA, the STAI, the IUS, the ASI-R, the BDI, the BAI, the PSWQ, the GAD-7, the APPQ, the PDSS, the ETISR-SF, and the SSI. In addition, the PD+MDD patients showed significantly lower quality of life than did the PD-MDD patients. In contrast with previous studies, we observed no significant differences between the two groups in terms of gender, duration until treatment, and psychiatric comorbidities. Conclusions This study showed that the PD+MDD patients have more early trauma experiences, higher levels of anxiety-related temperaments, more severe panic and depressive symptoms, and lower quality of life than the PD-MDD patients.
Objective : Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is implicated in the pathophysiology of several neuropsychiatric disorders. However, there are few studies on BDNF of panic disorder. In this study, we investigated plasma BDNF levels in patients with panic disorder, and evaluated whether there are associations between clinical characteristics of panic disorder and plasma BDNF levels. Methods : We included 110 patients with panic disorder and 110 health controls in the current study. Plasma BDNF levels were measured by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Plasma BDNF level differences were evaluated according to the clinical characteristics, such as duration of illness, recent stressful life event, agoraphobia, and insomnia. Results : The mean plasma BDNF levels of patients with panic disorder were significantly lower, as compared with those of controls (192.50 pg/mL vs. 693.75 pg/mL, t=8.838, p<0.001). The mean plasma BDNF levels of patients who had recent stressful life events were significantly higher, as compared with those who did not ($269.79{\pm}358.96pg/mL$ vs. $136.94{\pm}187.06pg/mL$, t=-2.525, p=0.013). Conclusion : These results suggested that BDNF plays a potential role in the pathophysiology of panic disorder.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between self-esteem and temporomandibular disorder among high school students. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 584 high school students in Gyeongnam. The questionnaire consisted of socio-demographic profile, anxiety, self-esteem, oral parafunctional habits, and temporomanibular disorder. Data were analyzed using SPSS 19.0 program. Results: In univariate analysis, there were significant differences between self-esteem and temporomandibular disorder(p<0.05). The self-esteem was negatively correlated with parafunctional habits(r=-0.253, p<0.001) and temporomandibular disorder(r=-0.221, p<0.001). In multivariate analysis, self-esteem was significantly associated with temporomandibular disorder(${\beta}=-0.119$, p=0.025) after adjusting for socio-demographic characteristics and anxiety. Conclusions: The self-esteem negatively influenced on temporomandibular disorder in the high school students.
The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of music therapy on anxiety in neurotic patients. The subjects of the study were 41 patients that had been diagnosed as having anxiety disorder, neurotic depression, or somatization disorder and were admitted to one general hospital in Seoul. The 41 research subjects were assigned to an experimental (22 clients) and a control (19clients) group. Data were gathered from September. 25, 1995 to December. 15, 1995 using a questionnaire and physiological measurement tool. Data were analyzed with the SAS package using frequency, t-test, paired t-test and Pearson correlation coefficients. The results of this study are as follows ; 1. There were significant differences between two groups on systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and pulse rate after treatment. In the experimental group, Systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and pulse rate decreased significantly after Music Therapy. 2. There were no significant differences between the two groups on the pre and post psychological anxiety score. But, after music therapy, experimental group had a lower psychological anxiety score than the control group. From these results, it is concluded that the music therapy can be effective in decreasing anxiety in neurotic patients.
Objectives: This study aimed to examine the effects of multidimensional five senses treatment on patients with depression or anxiety. Methods: This study examined the effects of multidimensional five senses treatment for patients with depression or anxiety who visited the neuropsychiatric clinic of Korean medicine. STAI-X1,X2, BDI, BAI, PAS were used to determine whether the mood (depression or anxiety) of patients was improved. Results: Our results showed that multidimensional five senses treatment improved the depressive symptoms or anxiety symptoms. In addition, after the multidimensional five senses treatment, PAS score in patients with panic disorder was improved. Conclusions: The multidimensional five senses treatment was effective for the improvement of patients with depression or anxiety.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the behavioral responses of children with burns, and anxiety and depression in their parents. Methods: Ninety-three parents of children with burns, ages 4 to 15 years who were admitted to hospital for an acute burn agreed to participate in this study. The Child Behavior Checklist, Beck Anxiety Inventory and Korean Version of Beck Depression Inventory were used for data collection. Results: The mean scores for acute traumatic disorder, post traumatic disorder, anxiety and depression were $9.05{\pm}3.04,\;39.59{\pm}8.75,\;11.89{\pm}11.53$, and $10.16{\pm}8.22$, respectively. There were significant relationships between depression and gender of children, education of parents, and number of family members. Child's behavioral responses were positively correlated with parents' anxiety and depression. Conclusion: The study found that the greater the behavioral responses of the children with burns, the more anxiety and depression experienced by the parents. The results indicate that psychological support must be provided for both the children with burns and their parents in conjunction with treatment of the burns.
This study was to investigate the anatomical evidence of anxiety. MRI was used to study 11 patients with panic disorder and 15 patients with complex partial seizure, and 21 controls. The regions of interest in the MRI were measured with computer-assisted planimetry using the AutoCad and digitizer. The following results were obtained ; 1) The mean age was 49.7(12.4) years in patients with panic disorder and 30.1(7.5) years in patients with complex partial seizure. 2) There were na signi ficant differences between 3 groups in the values of cerebral area, temporal lobe, caudate nucleus, hippocampus, parahippocampus, amygdala, third ventricle and VBR. The right parahippocampal region which attracted most attention in neurobiological studies regarding anxiety, tended to be larger in both study groups compared to the control group, but with no statistical significance. 3) There was lett-right reversal of temporal lobes in both study groups. And these are mainly due to asymmetrical increase in area of the temporal lobe on right side. These results suggest that temporal lobe, especially right temporal, is the anatomical correspondence of anxiety and functional activation of temporo-limbic system may be accompanied by the structural change of temporal lobe.
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a trauma-induced psychiatric disorder characterized by impaired fear extermination, hyperarousal, and anxiety that may involve the release of monoamines in the fear circuit. The reported pharmacological properties of tetramethylpyrazine (TMP) include anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, anti-atherosclerotic, and neuropsychiatric activities. However, the anxiolytic-like effects of TMP and its mechanism of action in PTSD are unclear. This study measured several anxiety-related behavioral responses to examine the effects of TMP on symptoms of anxiety in rats after single prolonged stress (SPS) exposure by reversing the serotonin (5-HT) and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis dysfunction. Rats were given TMP (10, 20, or 40 mg/kg, i.p.) for 14 days after SPS exposure. Administration of TMP significantly reduced grooming behavior, increased the time spent and number of visits to the open arm in the elevated plus maze test, and significantly increased the number of central zone crossings in the open field test. TMP administration significantly reduced the freezing response to contextual fear conditioning and significantly restored the neurochemical abnormalities and the SPS-induced decrease in 5-HT tissue levels in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. The increased 5-HT concentration during TMP treatment might be partially attribute to the tryptophan and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid mRNA level expression in the hippocampus of rats with PTSD. These findings support a role for reducing the altered serotonergic transmission in rats with PTSD. TMP simultaneously attenuated the HPA axis dysfunction. Therefore, TMP may be useful for developing an agent for treating psychiatric disorders, such those observed in patients with PTSD.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was 1. To investigate correlation of subjective stress with patient's prognosis 2. To observe the effect of Kami-shoyo-san on anxiety and depressive disorder. Methods: We investigated 3 cases of in-patients from traffic accidents. Patients were treated with Kami-shoyo-san. The Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were used to assess anxiety and depression, respectively. We also used Qi stagnation test and Qi counterflow test according to Terasawa's criteria for diagnosis of anxiety and depression. Pain was evaluated by Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). Results: After treatment, the patient's symptoms improved considerably. Conclusions: 1. There were significant correlations between subjective stress and prognosis. 2. Kami-shoyo-san has good effect on anxiety and depressive disorder.

Objectives : Studies have reported differences between depressed adults and controls in quantitative measures of EEG alpha asymmetry, but, there are few using Korean subjects. So, the present study compared EEG regional alpha asymmetries of patients having major depressive disorder(MDD) and normal controls. Methods : The subjects in this study were 11 unmedicated unipolar depressed patients and 11 non-depressed, age matched controls. Resting EEG(eyes closed and eyes open) was recorded from each participant using 8 scalp electrodes. Beck Depression Inventory(BDI), 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale(HDRS), Zung's Self-Rating Depression Scale(SDS) and Spielberger's State-Trait Anxiety Inventory(STAI) were used to evaluate depression and anxiety symptoms. Results : The severities of depression measured by self-report questionnaires were positively associated with those of anxiety(state and trait) ; The subjects were both anxious and depressed. Anxious-depressed patients differed from controls in alpha asymmetry at T4 channels. They showed evidence of greater activation over right than left temporal site. Conclusion : These findings are consistent with the previousely reported alpha asymmetry of depressed patients with an anxiety disorder. The failure to find the evidence of reduced right parietal activity in depression is presumed to be due to opposing effects of comorbid anxiety on parietotemporal activity.
