Bacterial infection of the uterus in Hanwoo can kill embryos. Therefore, many antibiotics have been used to treat this infection in the uterus of repeat breeders. Incorrect use of antibiotics has led to resistance in bacteria. Natural compounds have used as substitutes for antibiotics because they are safe and have very mild side effects. This study was conducted to examine the antimicrobial effects of five extracts from medicinal plants including Humulus japonicas (Hj), Phelledendron amurense (Pa), Viola mandshurica (Vm), Carthamus tinctorius (Ct), and Chelidoni herba (Ch) on bacteria isolated from the uterus of Hanwoo using the paper disc diffusion method. Hj and Pa extracts had potent antimicrobial effects against Staphylococcus lentus, Streptococcus infantarius subsp. coli, and Bacillus pumilus. Pa had the greatest antimicrobial effect among the five medicinal plants and was effective against 19 types of bacteria from bovine uterus. Compared to Pa, Hj showed weaker antimicrobial effects on all the bacteria tested except Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Vm, Ct, and Ch also showed weak antimicrobial effects on the tested bacteria. The results obtained suggest that Hj and Pa are natural compounds suitable for treating bacterial infection in repeat breeders and improving conception rates of Hanwoo.

Objectives: This study was conducted in order to assess the efficacy of 1st generation cephalosporin as use as a single-dose preoperative prophylactic antibiotic for surgical wound infections resulting from intra-oral bone grafting procedures. Materials and Methods: A total of 23 patients who were to undergo intra-oral bone graft procedures participated in this study. After randomization, 2 grams of 1st generation cephalosporin was orally administered to both the experimental and placebo groups one hour prior to surgery in a double-blind fashion. Post-operatively, the experimental group (12 patients) was orally administered placebo three times a day for three days. The control group (11 patients) was orally administered 1st generation cephalosporin three times a day for three days. The postoperative course was observed for one month including the clinical parameters associated with infection. Results: Postoperative infections were noted in 1 out of 11 patients in the experimental group. No infections occurred in the control group. Conclusion: There was no significant difference in the incidence of postoperative infections between the two groups. Two grams of 1st generation cephalosporin administered orally one hour before surgery served as an effective prophylactic antibiotics therapy for intra-oral bone graft surgery.
The aim of this study was to determine the minimal inhibitory concentration(MIC) of cefixime, which is a 3rd generation of cefalosporin, against 6 species of putative periodontopathogens; Fusobacterium nucleatum, Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Prevotella intermedia, Prevotella nigrescens, Tannerella forsythia and Porphyromonas gingivalis. The efficacy of cefixime was examined by comparing it with that of several antibiotics(amoxicillin, $Augmentin^{(R)}$ ciprofloxacin, metronidazole, and tetracycline), which were used as the control. The MIC was measured using a microdilution method. The MIC of cefixime against the putative periodotopathogens, as a single use regimen, was relatively lower than that of the other antibiotics. The MIC of cefixime/metronidazole against P. intermedia ChDC KB14, P. nigrescens ChDC KB50, F. nucleatum ChDC PV-F37, F. nucleatum ChDC F130, and F. nucleatum ChDC F175, as a simultaneous regimen, was lower than that of the other antibiotics. The concentration of cefixime in the crevicular fluid of volunteers who received 250mg every 12 hours for 3 days was $9{\mu}g/ml$ after 9 hours. In conclusion, cefixime showed good antimicrobial activity in a single treatment or as a combined therapy with amoxicillin, $Augmentin^{(R)}$ or metronidazole against 6 periodontopathogens.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of acupuncture and moxibustion for mastitis. Methods: We used ten databases including Embase, PubMed, and CNKI to investigate the literatures of mastitis using the keywords "mastitis" and "acupuncture", "breast inflammation" and "acupuncture", "mastitis" and "needle", "breast inflammation" and "needle", "mastitis" and "moxibustion". We excluded studies which included treatments that could affect the judgement of the effectiveness of acupuncture treatment, and the control group was limited to antibiotics. The quality of the paper was evaluated by Risk of Bias. A meta-analysis was performed using a "Review manager" to see the effectiveness of acupuncture and moxibustion compared to antibiotics. Results: Only six RCT were finally selected. Five studies use the total effective rate as a evaluating index, and it was significantly higher than that of the control group in two studies. In other three studies, acupuncture showed similar effectiveness to antibiotics. Meta-analysis was performed through three studies, there was no statistically significant difference in total effective rate between acupuncture and antibiotic treatment. Conclusions: Analysis of six RCT showed that acupuncture and moxibustion seem to have many possibilities as one of the treatments for mastitis. However the number of documents is not sufficient, more research should be done to obtain reliable information.
The pharmaceutical industry in Bangladesh produces a diverse range of antibiotics for human and animal use, however, waste disposal management is inadequate. This results in substantial quantities of antibiotics being discharged into water bodies, which provide suitable environment for the growth of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, capable of spreading resistance genes. This study intended for exploring the bacterial antibiotic resistance profile in adjoining aquatic environmental sources of pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities in Bangladesh. Seven surface water samples were collected from the vicinity of two pharmaceutical industries located in the Savar area and 51 Escherichia coli isolates were identified using both phenotypic and genotypic methods. Antibiotic susceptibility tests revealed the highest percentage of resistance against ampicillin, azithromycin, and nalidixic acid (100%) and the lowest resistance against meropenem (1.96%) out of sixteen different antibiotics tested. 100% of the study E. coli isolates were observed with Multidrug resistance phenotypes, with the Multiple Antibiotic Resistance (MAR) value ranging from 0.6-1.0. Furthermore, 69% of the isolates were Extended Spectrum Beta-Lactamases (ESBL) positive as per the Double Disk Diffusion Synergy Test (DDST). ESBL resistance genes blaTEM, blaCTX-M-13, blaCTX-M-15, and blaSHV were detected in 70.6% (n = 36), 60.8% (n = 32), 54.9% (n = 28), and 1.96% (n = 1) of the isolates, respectively, by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Additionally, 15.68% (n = 8) of the isolates were positive for E. coli specific virulence genes in PCR. These findings suggest that pharmaceutical wastewater, if not properly treated, could be a formidable source of antibiotic resistance spread in the surrounding aquatic environment. Therefore, continued surveillance for drug resistance among bacterial populations around drug manufacturing facilities in Bangladesh is necessary, along with proper waste disposal management.

Background: Bronchiectasis is a chronic respiratory condition leading to recurrent respiratory infections. Despite the use of antibiotics and other standard treatments, managing bronchiectasis remains challenging due to the frequent recurrence of airway infections and concerns about antimicrobial resistance. Given these challenges, traditional Korean medicine (TKM) has gained attention due to its potential to reduce the frequency of respiratory infections, possibly minimizing the need for antibiotics. Case report: A 59-year-old female with bronchiectasis experienced recurrent pneumonia and was treated with antibiotics for over 2 weeks without any significant improvement in clinical symptoms. She received comprehensive Korean medicine treatment, including herbal medicine (Sikyungbanha-tang combined with Bigwabojungikki-tang-gami), acupuncture, and Chuna manual therapy, for pulmonary rehabilitation. Post-treatment, clinically meaningful improvements were observed in symptoms, serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, and bronchopneumonic lesions on chest X-rays. Conclusion: This case suggests that complex traditional Korean medicine treatments for recurrent chronic airway inflammation due to bronchiectasis can lead to clinically significant improvements in symptoms and help to prevent recurrence.
These two pulmonary actinomycosis cases had undergone right upper lobectomy and left lower lobectomy individually under the diagnosis of lung cancer and lung abscess. Recently pulmonary actinomycosis is very rare by the widespread use of antibiotics. In addition to clinical similarity to lung cancer and pulmonary tuberculosis, lack of suspicion and difficulty in obtaining adequate culture material also hamper the precise preoperative diagnosis. The purpose of this report is to review of our experiences and to enhance consideration of pulmonary actinomycosis.
A 39 year-old woman presenting with a hemoptysis, pulmonary infiltrate was found to have thoracic actinomycosis by the specimens of excised lung. Recently, pulmonary actinomycosis is very rare by the widespread use of antibiotics. Clinical, radiological, and microbiological findings can be nonspecific. The diagnosis is dependent on a high index of suspicion. Chances for cure are excellent with lengthy antibiotic administration. The purpose of this paper is to review our experience and to remind us of pulmonary actinomycosis.
A total of 130 of Staphylococcus strains isolated from various clinical specimens of admitted patients of a university hospital with systemic or severe cases of infection. All of these were tested for the antimicrobial susceptibility to 11 drugs of common use. The hospital strains isolated showed higher frequency of resistance against four drugs including gentamicin, penicillin, erythromycin, kanamycin but amikacin, cephalothin, streptomycin were effective. And also 47.7% of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus were isolated from the clinical patients. However, isolated Escherichia coli strains showed higher frequency of resistance, but two drugs, tobramycin and gentamicin were effective to them.
The synthesis of various cyclic carbamate compounds and amino alcohols has attracted attention in the past because of their potential as antibiotics, antitumor, analgenics, anticonvulsants. Several methods for the preparation of cyclic carbamate compounds have previously been reported including the use of heterocumulenes. We have recently described the novel synthetic method for N-protected amines from various ethers using Chlorosulfonyl isocyanate(CSI) and found that the mechanism of our CSI reaction is a competitive reaction of $S_N1$ and $S_ Ni$ mechanisms according to the stability of carbocation intermediates.
