Objectives: Cefotaxime is an antibiotic used to treat several bacterial infections. Specifically, it is used to treat pelvic inflammatory disease, meningitis, pneumonia, urinary tract infections, and sepsis. It is given by injection into either a vein or muscle. Antibacterial polymers prepared by chemical bonding and simple blending of antibacterials into polymers has attracted much interest because of their long-lasting antibacterial activity. This study attempted to review the possibility of hydrogel films as functional antibacterial materials by antimicrobial activity. Methods: In this study, CTX-PAA was synthesized by the chemical reaction of polyacrylic acid with cefotaxime by N,N'-Dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) method. Synthetic antibacterial hydrogel films were then prepared with PVA and CTX-PAA for functional application. Results: The increase in the cefotaxime content of the hydrogel films showed a similar decrease in tensile strength and elongation. The values of films impregnated with chemically bonded cefotaxime showed no significant difference. Antibacterial susceptibility was determined against Streptococcus pneumoniae and Escherichia coli using a standardized disc test. Conclusion: The synthetic antibacterial hydrogel films exhibited broad susceptibility against Streptococcus pneumoniae and Escherichia coli. Notably, the antibacterial effect of antibacterial hydrogel films against Grampositive (Streptococcus pneumoniae) was superior to that against Gram-negative (Escherichia coli).
Antibacterial substances produced by Lactobacillus casei subsp. and Streptococcus faecium were examined for its antibacterial effects against some pathogenic bacteria. They were partially purified with ammonium sulfate precipitation, methanol-acetone extraction, G-50 gel filtration and examined its characteristics. When L casei subsp. and Str faecium were cultivated in MRS broth, stationary phase of L casei is until 24 hours and Str faecium is 20 hours. pH change of the cultured medium was both decreased after 12 hours and then constant at pH 4.5~4.6 after 28 hours. MRS broth culture fluids of L casei subsp. and Str faecium appeared the antibacterial effects by the spot-on-the-lawn method against ETEC, Sal pullorum and Sta aureus. Culture filtrates of L casei subsp. and Str faecium also appeared the antibacterial effects by the disc diffusion method. Culture filtrates of L casei sub. rhamnosus 7469 produced 0.032M of lactic acid and 0.01M of acetic acid. Str faecium 27273 also produced 0.027M of lactic acid and 0.01M of acetic acid. Protein concentrations of culture filtrates produced by L casei sub rhamnosus 7469 and Str faecium 27273 was $495{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ and $594{\mu}g/m{\ell}$, respectively. Antibacterial substances which are partially purified by ammonum sulfate precipitation, methanol-acetone extraction and G-50 gel filtration inhibit the growth of ETEC, Sal pullorum and Sta aureus. Characteristics of purified antibacterial substances was examined. Its molecular weight was about 31Kd, stabilized at $100^{\circ}C/20min.$ and some of proteolytic enzyme treatment.
A bacterial strain inhibiting the growth of Vibrio anguillarum, the causative agent of vibriosis, was isolated from fish intestines. The isolated strain HS36 was identified as Aerococcus urinaeequi based on the characteristics of the genus according to Bergey's Manual of Systematic Bacteriology and by 16S rRNA sequencing. The growth rate and antibacterial activity of strain HS36 in shaking culture were higher than those in static culture, while the optimal pH and temperature for antibacterial activity were 7.0 and 30℃, respectively. The active antibacterial substance was purified from a culture broth of A. urinaeequi HS36 by Sephadex G-75 gel chromatography, Sephadex G-25 gel chromatography, and reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. Its molecular weight, as estimated by Tricine SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, was approximately 1,000 Da. The antibacterial substance produced by strain HS36 was stable after incubation for 1 h at 100℃. Although its antibacterial activity was optimal at pH 6-8, activity was retained at a pH range from 2 to 11. The purified antibacterial substance was inactivated by proteinase K, papain, and β-amylase treatment. The newly purified antibacterial substance, classified as a class II bacteriocin, inhibited the growth of Klebsiella pneumoniae, Salmonella enterica, and Vibrio alginolyticus.
Fluoroquinolone (FQ) antibiotics are an important class of synthetic antibacterial agents. These are the most extensively used drugs for treating bacterial infections in the field of both human and veterinary medicine. Herein, the antibacterial and pharmacological properties of four fluoroquinolones: lomefloxacin, norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, and ofloxacin have been studied. The objective of this study was to analyze the antibacterial characteristics of the different fluoroquinolones. Also, the pharmacological properties of the compounds including the Lipinski rule of five, absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion, LD50, drug likeliness, and toxicity were evaluated. We found that among all four FQ molecules, ofloxacin showed the highest antibacterial activity through in silico assays with a strong interaction (-38.52 kJ/mol) with the antibacterial target protein (topoisomerase-II DNA gyrase enzyme). The pharmacological and pharmacokinetic analysis also showed that the compounds ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, lomefloxacin and norfloxacin have good pharmacological properties. Notably, ofloxacin was found to possess an IGC50 (concentration needed to inhibit 50% growth) value of $0.286{\mu}g/L$ against the Tetrahymena pyriformis protozoa. It also tested negative for the Ames toxicity test, showing its non-carcinogenic character.
The cDNA clone encoding the antibacterial peptide (SL-1) was isolated from the fat body of the common cutworm, Spodoptera litura, immunized with E. coli K12. The primary structure analysis revealed that its deduced amino acid sequence showed the characteristics of the cecropin family antibacterial peptides and that the amino acid residues highly conserved in the antibacterial peptides from moths and flies were also conserved, implying that SL-1 was a cecropin-like, and especially cecropin B-like, peptide. The predicted secondary structure of the mature SL-1 consists of three domains: (i) an amphiphilic ${\alpha}$-helical domain (Ile-4 to Gly-18); (ii) the hinge region (Gly-23 and Pro-24); and (iii) a hydrophobic domain (Ala-25 to IIe-38).
A bacterium(Y-5) which has potent antibacterial activity against swine atrophic rhinitis bacteria (Bordetella bronchiseptica, Pasteurella multocida) was isolated from soil and identified as a strain of Bacillus sp. Y-5 upon investigation of the morphological and physiological characteristics. The culture broth obtained from incubation of the Y-5 strain at $30^{\circ}C$ for 21 h in tryptose-bouillon agar medium (pH 6.0) showed active antibacterial activity against Bordetella bronchiseptica and the culture broth that of $30^{\circ}C$, pH 6.5, 18 h showed active antibacterial activity against Pasteurella multocida.
Recently, with an increase of interest in hygiene of textile products, research related to finishing technology to impart various functionalities, such as antibacterial and deodorizing properties, has also required. Therefore, in this study, the improvement of comfort was examined by analyzing the change of moisture characteristics and antibacterial and deodorizing properties of underwear fabric by chitosan microcapsule(CH-M) finishing. The results revealed that moisture absorption time of the fabric shortened, diffusion rate increased, while absorption rate slightly increased because of microcapsule finishing. In addition, the one-way transfer capacity of the microcapsule finished fabric was 17.69, which improved moisture transfer to one side, while OMMC showed the values of 0.32 and 0.37 for untreated and finished fabrics, respectively, which slightly increased after finishing. In the case of untreated fabric, antibacterial activity was 89.0% against Staphylococcus aureus and 70.3% against Klebsiella pneumoniae; however, both strains showed 99.9% antibacterial activity by CH-M finishing. An excellent bacterial reduction rate was also observed. In the case of the CH-M finished fabric, there was a deodorization effect exceeding 99% up to 120 minutes, and it showed an excellent deodorization effect of more than 99% even after 10 repeated washings.
Flavor characteristics of raw Cordyceps militaris significatntly different from those of dried one. In the case of raw Cordyceps militaris , major flavor components were composed of 5 alcohols, 3 ketones, 4 phenols, 9 alkanes , and 3 alkenes. The major alcohol was 1-octen-3-ol(22.56%, 1147.3% ng/ml), which contributed to the characteristic green flavor. Ketones (3-ocatone, inparticular )were present in the highest concentration in raw Cordyceps militaris . In contrast, major flavor components of dried Cordyceps militaris were composed of 4 alcohols, 4 ketones, 3 furans, 4 pyrizines, 2 dithiazines, 5 phenols , 8alkenes , 17 alkanes, and 8 fatty acids. Dried Cordyceps militaris had unique sweet aroma of sesame as wella s a milky flavor. Green or fruit flavor were rarely detected . In alkanes , 10 cosanes, component fo wax were present. Typical flavor components of alkanes such as $\beta$-caryophyllen and Δ-cadinene were also detected. Fatty acids of dried Cordyceps militaris ranged from myristic acid (14 :0) to linoleic acid (18 ; 2). The sweet aroma of dried Cordyceps militaris was mostly due to pryazines, dithaiazines, and furans. Two dithaizines were identified and characteristics of these flavor components was a roasted bacon flavor. Strong antibacterial acitivity was observed toward Vibrio spp. such as V. vulnificus, V.cholerae, V. parahaemlyticus. Relatively high antibacterial acitivity was shown toward Bacillus subtilis , B,cereus, Staphyllococcus aureus, and Corynebacterium xerosis.

Antibacterial activity was induced in the haemolymph of the common cutworm, Spodoptera litura by the artificial injection of E, coli Ek132. Antibacterial peptides were purified from the immunized haemolymph by heat treatment, ion-exchange chromatography, gel filtration chromatography, and reverse phase FPLC, and their physicochemical characteristics were investigated. These purified antibacterial peptides designated as spodopsin la and Ib were named after Spodoptera litura. Spodopsin la and Ib had the apparent molecular masses of 3, 823 Da and 3, 886 Da, respectively, and about 20% of the sequences had basic amino acids, such as lysine and arginine but no cysteine. Also, spodopsin l was confirmed to be a new member of cecropin family having a similar amino acid sequence to cecropin of lepidopteran insects, such as Bombyx mori and Hyalophora cecropia. The purified spodopsin was active against gram-positive as well as gram-negative bacteria.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the antibacterial effects of natural colors extracted from yellow natural dyes(Tumeric, Amur Cork Tree and Onion Shell). The water and the methanol extracts of Tumeric and Amur Cork Tree significally decreased the growth of E. coli in vitro and the methanol extract of Tumeric exhibited the strongest inhibitory effect among the samples. Silk and nylon fabrics dyed with water and methanol extracts of the yellow natural dyes showed antimicrobial activities against E. coli and Staph aureus in the Bioassay Test. Nylon fabric dyed with methanol extracts of them showed strong antibacterial effect on E. coli compared with that of water extracts. However, slik fabrics dyed with the extracts could not reduce the growth of E. coli. Silk or nylon fabrics dyed with methanol or water extracts of yellow natural dyes showed antimicrobial activities against Staph aureus. The antimicrobial activity of the fabrics dyed with methanol extracts from Tumeric, Amur Cork Tree and Onion Shell was stronger than that of water extracts, especially, the fabrics dyed with Tumeric extract showed the highest antibacterial property among the dyed fabrics.
