Methanol and aqueous extract of leaves of Trema orientalis Linn. were subjected to the potential antioxidant and antibacterial activities. The pharmacological interest of this plant coupled with traditional use (antidiarrhoeal, antiseptic, analgesic etc) prompted to test for antioxidant and antibacterial activities. The antioxidant potential of the methanolic extract was determined on the basis of their scavenging activity of the stable 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl free radical. $IC_{50}$ of the methanol extract of T. orientalis was $110.25\;{\mu}g/ml$ which indicated the strong antioxidant activity of the plant. However the aqueous extract showed mild antioxidant activity. In case of antibacterial activities test, the extract was subjected for its effectiveness against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria in agar diffusion method. The zones of inhibition produced by the crude methanol and aqueous extract against few sensitive strains were measured and compared with those of standard antibiotic Gentamycin. It is evident that both extracts are active against the bacteria at low concentrations. The obtained results provide a support for the use of this plant in traditional medicine and suggest its further advance investigation.
Dyeing liquor was extracted from flowers, leaves and stems of balsamine. Dyeing properties, colorfastness and antibacterial activities of the fabrics dyed with the balsamine extracts were investigated at a variety of dyeing conditions of differing pH. time and temperature. Wool, silk and nylon fabrics showed better dyeability than cellulosic fabrics, i.e. cotton, linen and rayon. Especially, nylon fabrics showed the highest K/S values. The dye-uptake was achieved to the highest degree during the first ten minutes of dyeing procedure. All fabrics were dyed well at $40^\circ{C}$ with no pH adjustment. The pH of unadjusted balsamine extracts was 4.6. Their colorfastnesses to washing, drycleaning and perspiration were good as 4 or 4-5 grade. but the light fastnesses were poor as 1-2 grade. While, the antibacterial activities to Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae were excellent with 99.9% of colonies reduction ratio. Their excellent antibacterial activity was kept well after ten times washing.
For the purpose of developing of anticariogenic agents, P-phenylphenol derivatives were synthesized and determined their antibacterial activities against a cariogenic bacterium, Streptococcus mutans. Among synthetic compounds, 2-nitro-6-bromo-p-phenylphenol showed as potent antibacterial activity as magnolol and honokiol.
Ethyl 1-aminotetrazole-5-carboxylate (1) has been utilized to construct a variety of novel tetrazolo [1,5-b]-1,2,5-oxadiazepine derivatives which repesent a relatively little explored group with interesting antibacterial activities. The synthesized compounds were elucidated using IR, $^1H$ NMR and mass spectroscopic methods, besides elemental analyses.
New antibiotics having moieties of penicillanic acid, cephalosporanic acid and ampicillin on both ends of the central alkylene were synthesized by reacting 6-aminopenicillanic acid (6-APA), 7-aminocephalosporanic acid (7-ACA) and ampicillin with hexamethylene diisocyanate and sebacoyl chloride, respectively. Antibacterial activities of the compounds were also investigated. The compound derived from sabacic acid and ampicillin exhibited an enhanced antibacterial activities against gram-negative bacteria and was found to be a promising wide-spectrum antibiotic.
Naturally occurring diallyldihydroxybiphenyl compounds, magnolol and honokiol were reported to have potent antibacterial activities against most of Gram positive bacteria (1-4). To developmore potent antibacterial agents, some allyhydroxybiphenyl derivatives were synthesized from the starting compounds, p-phenyl-phenol (I) p-phenylphenol (IV), o, o-biphenol (VII) and p. p'-biphenol (XII). Among the newly synthesized compounds (III, VI, IX, XI, XIV and XVI), the antibacterial activities of 2-allyl-p-phenylphenol (VI), 6-ally-o, 0'-biphenol (IX), 2, 2'-diallyl-o, o'-biphenol (XIV) and 2, 2', 6-triallyl-p, p'-biphenol (XIV) were more potent than those of magnolol and bonokiol against a cariogenic bacterium, Stroptococcus matans ATCC OMZ 176.
Purpose : In recent years, essential oils have been produced using natural extracts for various uses. Their functionality is currently being tested not only for cosmetics and perfumes but also for other categories of products. Therefore, this study verified their antibacterial effects on S. mutans, P. gingivalis, and L. gasseri which are the representative strains that cause oral diseases. Methods : Eighteen types of natural essential oils were made at a concentration of 50 % (v/v) using Tween 20, and their antibacterial effects were verified by applying S. mutans, P. gingivalis, and L. gasseri. The antibacterial effects were measured with the disc diffusion method. All the experiments were repeated three times, and the mean value of three measurement values for each variable was used for data analysis. A one-way analysis of variance was conducted using these mean values. Results : Of the eighteen types of essential oils tested, sixteen types showed antibacterial effects on S. mutans, and sixteen and fifteen types exhibited antibacterial effects on P. gingivalis and L. gasseri respectively. The types of essential oils with high-level antibacterial activities were geranium, may chang, and bergamot for S. mutans, lemongrass, bergamot, and eucalyptus for P. gingivalis, and lemongrass, machan, and geranium for L. gasseri in order of antibacterial effect. This result was statistically significant (p<.001). In addition, in the case of mandarin oil, it was found that there was no antibacterial activity in all three strains. Conclusion : This study proved the antibacterial activities of essential oils, which are used for various purposes in daily life, against dental caries and periodontal diseases. The study results will likely be applied to different prevention programs for oral health and broadly used to develop products such as oral care items and dentifrices.

Lysozyme is present in tears and has the ability to inhibit bacterial growth. In addition, it acts as a physiological scavenger for harmful substances. In the present study, sixteen tear samples from people of different ages were evaluated for their antibacterial spectrum against selected bacterial strains (Escherichia coli, Shigella sonnei, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella enterica Typhi). A radial diffusion assay was used to evaluate the antibacterial potential of tear samples. To correlate the antibacterial activities of these tear samples, the concentration of lysozyme in the tear samples was also determined. Ampicillin was used as a standard drug. The zone of inhibition (mm) was used to measure the antibacterial property of the tears. All samples showed good antibacterial activities. The tear samples of children showed antibacterial activities in the range of 4.40~5.00 mm inhibition zones against the selected bacterial strains. The tear samples from the young and adults showed good antibacterial potential with a zone of inhibition in the range of 3.20~4.00 and 4.00~5.50 mm, respectively. The tear samples from the old age group showed inhibition zones from 1.50~5 mm. The adult tear samples showed the maximum inhibition against the selected bacterial strains among all groups. The lysozyme concentration was 1.7 mg/mL, 1.95 mg/mL, 2.13 mg/mL, and 1.76 mg/mL for children, young, adults, and elderly, respectively. In conclusion, the tears from adults have the high inhibition potential. In addition, this data also showed that the lysozyme contents in the tear sample increased with age until 40~42 years.

The discovery of various activities of natural plants has increased interest in halophytes. Suaeda australis and S. maritime are perennial halophytes that belong to the Chenopodiaceae family. Extracts of S. australis and S. maritime plants were investigated for concentration and time-dependent antibacterial and antioxidant activities using bacterial species and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, respectively, as well as total phenolic content. The S. australis extract ($500{\mu}g/mL$) showed activity against all the bacterial species including P. aeruginosa, P. mirabilis, A. baumannii, and VRE with 61.1, 42.3, 44.49, and 40.38%, respectively, inhibition and suppressed of these four species for 12 h. Overall, the S. australis extract showed marked antibacterial activities while, in contrast, the S. maritime extract had excellent antioxidant effects. However, the effects of the two extracts were much lower than that of quercetin. The present study identified antibacterial activities of S. australis, and it would be necessary to perform further phytochemical studies of S. australis.
