  • The purpose of this study was to disclose the manufacturing process of activated carbon using coal. It investigated the influences on the physical properties that were manufactured activated carbon by using anthracite coal, bituminous coal under carbonizated and activated condition. The adsorption capacities of organic material were superior when the ash content was lower 5∼10%, and the iodine value was about 1,000 mg/g, the adsorption capacity decreased rapidly when ash content was over 15%. The manufactured activated carbon were found characteristics such as the iodine value was over 1,031 mg/g, the specific surface area was over 1,032 $m^2$/g and the hardness was over 95% under manufacturing conditions which were carbonizated temperature of $600^{\circ}C$( 180 minute), activated temperature of 95$0^{\circ}C$(210 minute) and steam weight of 6 $m\ell$/min.100 g coal.

  • To increase the recycling rate of anthracite fly ash, the properties of anthracite fly ash were compared to that of bituminous fly ash. Especially, the high temperature properties of the fly ash are investigated by using thermal analysis, high temperature microscope and X-ray diffraction analysis for utilizing anthracite fly ash to prepare the calcinated bricks. The average ratio of $A1_2$$O_3$/$SiO_2$ for anthracite is 0.62 and the ratio for bituminous is 0.34. The content of $SiO_2$ in anthracite fly ash was higher than that of bituminous fly ash. The $A1_2$$O_3$ of anthracite fly ash reacted with the $A1_2$$O_3$ in the fly ash and formed new mullite crystal at over $1000^{\circ}C$, so anthracite fly ash showed high fire resistance. And, the fly ash mixtures having kaolin were prepared, and then extruded in vacuum to evaluate the extruding property of anthracite fly ash mixture. The extruding velocity was decrease with increasing the addition amount of fly ash in the mixture, and the maximum addition amount of fly ash that could be extruded was 60 wt%.

  • The slowly released potassium fertilizer was developed by mixing fly ash with KOH, anthracite coal powder, KCI, $K_2CO_3$ and $Mg(OH)_2$ as the substances for accelerating calcination. Measuring proper ratios of raw materials, we found that the anthracite coal powder was 12 percent and $Mg(OH)_2$ was two to three percent. The optimal calcination temperature and time were proved to be $850^{\circ}C$ and 30 minutes, respectively, however, the trial product with lower temperature and shorter time in calcination had low quality. The K solubility of the product was very low compared to that of the KCl fertilizer.

  • This study was devoted to the manufacturing process of activated carbon(AC) using and anthracite and bituminous coals which were regarded as appropriate for AC manufacturing, and the physcial properties a AC prepared with coal blends were characterized by the ultimate and proximate analysis. Generally, as the fraction of antheracite in AC from anthracite and bituminous coal blends was increased, AC yield was increased whereas iodine value($I_2$) was decreased. Being not related to mixing ratio of coal blends, the apparent density of AC remained constant. Pore development and iodine value of AC based on coal blends(Fushun and Dandong, 75:25 wt. %) were examined, varing carbonization and steam activation conditions. These results showed that the average pore diameter of AC was below $20{\AA}$ in the activation temperature range of 850 to $900^{\circ}C$ and the iodine value was above $1000m^2/g$. When the adsorption capacity of manufactured AC was compared with commercial AC, it is found that the AC from coal blends was comparable to the commercial AC. Therefore, it was confirmed that the characteristics of manufactured AC were changed with manufacturing conditions and the ratios and types of coal blends.

  • Coal fly ashes collected from the Samcheonpo and the Seocheon Power Plants were analyzed for major and minor components and heavy metals such as As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ga, Hg, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, V and Zn in order to suggest basic data to apply coal fly ash as fertilizer or soil ameliorator. The specific gravity of the samples was less than 2.0, and amounts of organic matter range from 5.0% to 12.3%. The identified minerals by XRD were mainly quartz, mullite and pyrite in anthracite coal, and mainly quartz and mullite in bituminous coal. Generally, the contents of heavy metal elements analyzed were lower less than those of soil, though higher in some samples. Element couples of some elements( e.g., As-Mo, Zn ; Mo-As, Sb, V, Zn ; Sb-Zn ) show positive correlations with each other, but the high correlations of toxic elements such as As, Pb, Cd and Hg indicate to give attention to apply coal fly ash as fertilizer or soil ameliorator.

  • Under the new environmental regulations announced by the government, utilities will have to cut their sulfur dioxide emissions by 60% from 1991 levels by the year of 1999. Sulfur dioxide emissions can be reduced prior to combustion by physical, chemical or biological coal cleaning. The new technology of high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) offers the potential of economic separatoins of a variety of fine, weakly magnetic minerals including inorganic sulfur and many ash-forming minerals from coals. In the present paper, magnetic separation tests have been conducted on Korean anthracite and high-sulfur Chinese coal to investigate the feasibility of these techniques for reducing sulfur content from coals. In wet magnetic separation, the studied operating parameters include particle size, pH, matrix types, feed solids content, feed rate, number of cleaning stages and etc. The results shows that for wet separation, 60~70% of total sulfur was removed from coals with over 80% combustible recovery, on the other hand, for dry separation, 47.6% of total sulfur was removed from coals with 75% recovery.

  • Granulation procedure was carried out in a 0.109m I. D., 1.8m height fluidized bed coal combustor of the multi-sized particles. The domestic anthracite with heating value 3240kcal/kg was used. Granulation of fine coal particles and fluidizing characteristics were investigated by the pressure fluctuation properties such as mean pressure, standard deviation of pressure fluctuation and power spectrum distribution. Defluidization state and granulation mechanism were also studied by the various analysis. It was found that the conversion efficiency in the elutriated stream was increased by the coalescence of fine coal particles. Defluidization and pressure fluctuation properties were interrelated and this result was indication of the capabilities of pressure fluctuation properties analysis in the diagnostics of fluidizing state.

  • North Korea relies heavily on coal as the primary energy source, playing an important role in all energy demand sectors except for the transportation sector. Approximately half of the total electricity is generated through coal-fired power plants, and coal is used to produce heat and power for all industrial facilities. Furthermore, coal has been a significant contributor to earning foreign currency through long-term exports to China. Nevertheless, since the 1980s, indiscriminate mining activities have led to rapid depletion of coal production in most coal mines. Aging mine facilities, lack of investment in new equipment, shortages of fuel and electricity, difficulties in material supply, and frequent damage from flooding have collectively contributed to a noticeable decline in coal production since the late 1980s. North Korea's coal deposits are distributed in various geological formations from the Proterozoic to the Cenozoic, but the most critical coal-bearing formations are Ripsok and Sadong formations distributed in the Pyeongnam Basin of the Late Paleozoic from Carboniferous to Permian, which are called as Pyeongnam North and South Coal Fields. Over 90% of North Korea's coal is produced in these coal fields. The classification of coal in North Korea differs from the international classification based on coalification (peat, lignite, sub-bituminous coal, bituminous coal, and anthracite). North Korean classification based on industrial aspect is classified into bituminous coal, anthracite, and low-grade coal (Chomuyeontan). Based on the energy factor, it is classified into high-calorie coal, medium calorie coal, and low-calorie coal. In North Korea, the term "Chomuyeontan" refers to a type of coal that is not classified globally and is unique to North Korea. It is a low-grade coal exclusively used in North Korea and is not found or used in any other country worldwide. This article compares North Korea's coal classification and the international coal classification of coal and provides insights into the geological characteristics, reserves, utilization, and research trends of North Korean coal resources. This study could serve as a guide for preparing scientific and industrial agendas related to coal collaboration between North Korea and South Korea.

  • Among the byproducts from thermal power plant using coal combustion, fly ash as mineral admixture is widely utilized in concrete manufacturing for its engineering merits. However residuals including bottom ash are usually reclaimed. This study presents an evaluation of engineering properties in cement mortar with pond ash (PA). For this work, two types of pond ash (anthracite and bituminous coal) are selected from two reclamation sites. Cement mortar specimens considering two w/c (0.385 and 0.485) ratios and three replacement ratio of sand (0%, 30%, and 60%) are prepared and their workability, mechanical, and durability performance are evaluated. Anthracite pond ash has high absorption and smooth surface so that it shows reasonable workability, strength development, and durability performance since it has dense pore structure due to smooth surface and sufficient mixing water inside. Reuse of PA is expected to be feasible since PA cement mortar has reasonable engineering performance compared with normal cement mortar.

  • Coal ash has been used as a sand replacement in the construction industry. Due to the use of bituminous coal as a result of anthracite depletion, and quicklime as an air purifier in the desulfurization process, pop-out defects have recently occurred in concrete using coal ash, severely limiting the recycling of coal ash into concrete. In this study, the components that cause the pop-out problem of the coal ash filled concrete were identified and a pretreatment method to fully expand the expansive components in advance was proposed as a solution to this problem. By treating water twice for 10 min, allowing the CaO mixed in the coal ash to fully expand, the problems of pop-out and reduced compressive strength of the concrete were overcome. The cost and time efficient water treatment method proposed in this study is expected to promote the recycling of coal ash into concrete.
