  • Rice is very sensitive to high temperatures during the reproductive stage, particularly during the flowering and anthesis periods. To determine how high temperatures result in sterility during the flowering period in Korean rice cultivars, groups of 11 cultivars were subjected to different temperature regimes (24, 28, 30, and 33℃) during the flowering stage using sunlit phytotrons. At an average of 33℃, all 11 rice cultivars reached anthesis earlier than at the other temperatures. Microscopy analyses revealed significant differences in pollen germination and pollen viability in cultivars grown at 33℃ compared to those cultured at lower temperatures. At 33℃, the cultivars had significantly lower fertility rates (47% reduction) than cultivars grown at 24℃. These findings are important as rice pollination and fertility depend on the pollen viability and germination. The present study shows that rice fertility is negatively affected by excessively high temperatures.

  • Germination of Hemerocallis seeds as influenced by cold stratification at $5^{\circ}C$ (CS) and maturity of seeds evaluated using X-ray imaging has not been well investigated. Seeds of H. lilioasphodelus, H. citrina, H. citrina 'April Flower', and H. minor collected from China and H. thunbergii collected from Korea were germinated at $20^{\circ}C$ without pre-temperature treatment, while H. hongdoensis, H. dumortieri, H. minor, and H. vespertina seeds were treated with CS. Harvesting 'Stella de Oro' capsules at 35-40 days after anthesis yielded mature seeds with well-developed embryo and cotyledons analyzed by X-ray images with a 92% germination in 17 days after sowing. Seeds of H. thunbergii and H. citrina germinated in less than 13 days without CS; two weeks of CS did not accelerate seed germination. Seeds of H. hongdoensis germinated in 24 days when seeds were stored at $25^{\circ}C$ without CS and in less than 27 days when cold stratified. Therefore, 'Stella de Oro' capsules should be harvested at 35-40 days after anthesis to harvest mature seeds. Cold stratification is not required to accelerate seed germination in the Hemerocallis taxa evaluated in this study.

  • In this paper, a new hybrid species, Pulsatilla ${\times}$ yanbianensis H.Z. Lv, is named and described from the Yanbian area of Jilin Province in China. Molecular data confirm that this taxon is a result of natural hybridization between P. dahurica and P. cernua. As intermediate and mosaic phenotypes are expected for an interspecific hybrid, the leaves of P. ${\times}$ yanbianensis are fully expanded at the anthesis, resembling one of the parental species, P. daurica. However, the hybrid taxon is distinct from P. daurica by having reddish violet sepals and sterile fruits. Pulsatilla ${\times}$ yanbianensis also resembles the other parental species, P. cernua, in that it has dark red sepals and styles. The new hybrid, however, can be distinguished from P. cernua because it has leaf margins with short hairs and fully expanded leaves at the anthesis.

  • Climate change may result in greater risk of yield reduction of waxy corn due to drought stress and maize is one of the sensitive crops to the soil moisture shortage. While irrigation is the most effective practice to reduce the drought damage, farmers are unable to apply water due to limited water resource and irrigating facilities. The study was conducted to investigate the application effect of salicylic acid and abscisic acid on reducing drought stress of waxy corn (Zea mays L.). Drought stress was imposed by withholding irrigation from 9 days before anthesis to 14 days after anthesis. Salicylic acid or abscisic acid was applied on tasseling date at concentration of 0.5 mM and 0.1 mM, respectively. Drought stress increased anthesis-silking interval (ASI) by 3.0~3.3 days and decreased plant height, ear length, ear diameter, number of rows in ear, and yield by 47~51 cm, 4.6~5.0 cm, 4.4~5.3 mm, 1.5~2.0, and 2.4~2.5 Mg/ha, respectively. Application of salicylic acid and abscisic acid did not significantly reduced the drought injuries of waxy corn. Pretreatment of the plant growth regulators before water deficit stress or divided application at low concentration may be required to obtain the reduction effect on drought stress of waxy corn.

  • The object of this experiment was to suggest the optimum utilization upon rye and hairy vetch crops in Daejeon area. The field trials were conducted from 2002 to 2004 at Chungnam National University in order to evaluate the dry matter yield and quality of rye, hairy vetch, and rye+hairy vetch mixtures. The experiment was designed with split plots (main plot : seeding rate as rye mono culture, hairy vetch monoculture, rye 80%+hairy vetch 20%, rye 60%+hairy vetch 40%, and sub plot : 4 cutting stages as boot, heading, anthesis, milk). The average DM yield for 2 years had a difference on seeding rate and harvesting stages. The DM yield of rye monoculture was higher than those of the other seeding rates. There were significant increases in advanced stages in all treatments. In chemical composition, they also had a difference on seeding rates and growth stages. Hairy vetch monoculture was higher in crude protein (CP) and dry matter digestibility (DMD), but lower in fibrous compound than those of the other seeding rates (p<0.01). The crude protein dry matter (CPDM) and digestible dry matter yield was higher in rye 80%+hairy vetch 20% mixture when it was harvested at anthesis to milk stages. The results of this experiment indicated that when it was harvested at anthesis to the milk stages, rye 80%+hairy vetch 20% mixture was more effective in enhancing the DM yield and forage quality in Daejeon area.

  • Orostachys japonicus, called Wasong as herbal medicine and a short day plant, should be artificially kept in long daylength to control anthesis of its florets. The study was done to clarify the effect of daylength (10, 13, 16 hours a day) on growth, morphological characters, and flowering. The treatments were done on August 25 and afterward samples were taken every 2 weeks. Growth, morphological and flowering related characters were measured from each sample. With longer daylength plant height and inflorescence length were increased but number of leaves including bracts and stem diameter were decreased. Leaves and bracts, stem, root, shoot and total dry weights were increased with longer daylength from late September while floret dry weight showed reverse result. Florets formed were the greatest in daylength of 10 hours during September but the least during the other period. Anthesis of the florets was observed only in daylength of 10 hours during October and all the plants from the treatment were flowered.

  • The purpose of this study was to suggest the growth characteristics, seasonal anthesis distribution and botanical composition of wildflower pasture. The experimental wildflower were 34 species (1 turfgrass species, 4 native wildflower species and 29 introduced wildflower species). The experiment were administered in the Chungnam National University experimental field from March, 2008 to December, 2009 and the result is as follows: the wildflower length were within the range of 8-60 cm and their up-and-down space arrangement quite good. They bloomed into several colors of nine but one or three of nine colors were biased during August, September, and October. Their anthesis was biased toward May and June, and their seasonal distribution and permanence maintenance were too difficult from August and moreover two years later (2009) because of the decrease of the botanical distribution of annual wildflower after winter, the color, seasonal distribution, and permanence of wildflower became a problem. The botanical composition of wildflower, turf grass, and weeds came to 24%, 62%, and 14% each one year later (2008) and two years later (2009) 16%, 69%, and 15% each. Being grounded upon this result, in case of wildflower pasture of spring seeding, it is more important to maintain the color, seasonal distribution, and permanence of wildflower two years later than in the establishment year.

  • This study was carried out in the Chungnam National University grassland experimental field from October, 2007 to December, 2009 in order to find out the growth characteristics of the wildflowers, the seasonal anthesis distribution of the wildflowers and the botanical composition of the wildflowers which were altogether composed of 50% sheep fescue and 50% wildflowers. The experimental species contained 34 species in total consist of sheep fescue (fundamental turfgrass), 4 native wildflowers, and 29 introduced wildflowers belonged. At the time of the anthesis of the wildflowers, the average length was 30.0 cm one year later and 35.6 cm two years later. They bloomed out into ten colors, but into simplified colors during August, September, and October. The peak of the blooming was May and June and blooming pattern leant from August to October. Especially, at the age of two (2009) the color, seasonal distribution, and consistency emerged as problems owing to the reduction of annual wildflowers after winterization. The annual botanical composition of wildflowers, sheep fescue, and weed came to 28%, 55%, and 17% each one year later (2008) and 24%, 60%, and 17% each two years later (2009). Based on this result, cultivating wildflower grassland (sheep fescue 50% + wildflowers 50%) is the proper method for making up such flatlands as parks and riversides in a short period (one year) for the purpose of commanding a fine view.

  • This study was carried out in the Chungnam National University grassland experimental field from October, 2007 to December, 2009 in order to find out the growth characteristics, seasonal anthesis distribution and botanical composition of the wildflowers which were altogether composed of 70% sheep fescue and 30% introduced wildflowers. The experimental species contained 23 species in total to which sheep fescue (fundamental turfgrass) and 22 introduced wildflowers belonged. At the time of the anthesis of the wildflowers, the average plant height was 29.7 cm at first growing season and 34.1 cm at second growing season. They bloomed out into eight colors, but into simplified two colors during August, September, and October. The blooming season leant toward April and June and from August there were lots of difficulties in the wildflower blooming and the maintenance of their consistency. The botanical composition of wildflowers, sheep fescue, and weeds were 21%, 64%, and 15% in the first growing season (2008) and 19%, 65%, and 16% respectively, in the second growing season (2009). Based on this result, cultivating the introduced wildflower grassland has more difficulty because there is some difficulty in the wildflower seasonal distribution and the maintenance of its consistency. And thus, the introduction of more various wildflower such as perennials and flowers blooming after summer, and the seed-mixture combination method should be studied.
