  • We propose a thin frequency selective surface(FSS) superstrate etched on a substrate for dual-band directivity enhancement, and present a design method of the superstrate. In the proposed new design, two FSS arrays with the same periodicity, but with different alignments are placed above and below a thin dielectric layer to overcome the problem of conventional superstrates for dual band directivity enhancements. Based on the unit-cell simulation, several important parameters that characterize the thin FSS superstrate are investigated, and the procedure for designing such a superstrate is described. We compare the resonant frequencies and the qualify factors of the unit cell with those of three FSS antenna composites with different quality factors, and identify the quality factors which support similar directivity enhancement at the dual-band directivity enhancement. It was found that there is an optimum FSS array size of a superstrate to enhance the directivity most efficiently. Measured results for a fabricated superstrate show a good agreement with the simulated ones.

  • Tomographic approaches to image underground structure using electrical properties, can be divided into DC resistivity, electromagnetic, and radar tomography, based on the operating frequency. DC resistivity and radar tomography methods have been recently applied to site investigation for engineering purpose in Korea. This paper review these two tomography methods, through the case histories acquired in Korea. As another method of borehole radar survey, borehole radar reflection method is included, and its inherent problem and solution are discussed, how to find the azimuth angle of reflector using direction-finding-antenna. Since the velocity anisotropy of radar wave has been commonly encountered in field data, anisotropic radar tomography is discussed in this paper. In DC resistivity tomography, two subjects are focussed, electrode arrays, and borehole effect owing to the conductive fluid in borehole. Using the numerical modeling data, various kinds of electrode ways are compared, and borehole effect is illustrated. Most of the case histories presented in this paper are compared with known geology, core logging data, and/or Televiewer images.

  • The Direction-Of-Arrival(DOA) resolution of signals depends on the aperture size of the array. Therefore it is not easy to resolve closely spaced coherent signals impinge on an array with a small radius. In order to overcome the problem, a new method is proposed to use the characteristic of spatial spectrums for arrays which have different aperture sizes after virtually expanding the spacing of original antenna array. In case of coherent signals impinge on an uniform circular array, the perfect DOA resolution capability of 100 % is achieved at the SNR range of -10 dB to 0 dB by the Deterministic Maximum Likelihood(DML) algorithm including the proposed method. On the other hand, the standard DML algorithm can not resolve signals at all at the same SNR.

  • A circularly polarized $12\times12$ array with application in the satellite communications is designed at 10 GHz. The radiator is an aperture-coupled ring patch, which is suitable of large arrays. The element spacing of the array is chosen to be $0.7\lambda_0$to maintain the main beam in the broadside direction. The array is a sequential array constructed on a series-parallel feed network to obtain high gain and low axial ratio. Measurement results for the array, acquired by experiments in the compact range of POSTECH, showed a directivity of 27.88 dB, a high gain of 25.55 dB, an efficiency of 60%, an axial ratio of 1.74 dB, and a side-lobe level of -13 dB. The bandwidth of the array was 43% when the VSWR was 2, and the bandwidth of the axial ratio was 16%.

  • Because GPS signals are weak, system jamming is a real and present danger. This can happen when the receiver is subjected to intentional or unintentional interference by a transmitter. If the jamming signal is strong enough, the receiver can be operated to take corrective action automatically. Current methods to protect GPS receiver from jamming condition are based on spatial filtering. In this paper, the beamforming as referred to in signal processing technique used in arrays for directional signal reception was suggested and analyzed for anti-jamming. In order to change the directionality of the array when receiving a jamming signal, a beamformer can control the signal at each sensor. Therefore, cutoff angle ${\theta}$ was measured in the opposite direction of the jammer. GPS signals are only processed when the antenna element is within inside the cutoff angle. As a result, GPS positioning can be used in condition under cutoff angle $30^{\circ}$.

  • A simple closed form approximation is developed by a new approach presented in this paper for the microstrip surface dyadic Green's function which arises in the problem of an electric current point source on an infinite planar grounded dielectric substrate. This closed form approximation includes the effects of the space wave, the surface wave and their coupling within the transition region near the source, and remains accurate as near as $0.1{\pi}_1$ from the source point for a substrate thickness as large as $0.04{\pi}_1$, where, ${\pi}_1$, is the free space wavelength, This result can significantly facilitate the rigorous moment method analysis of microstrip antenna arrays on relatively this substrates of practical interest. Numerical results illustrating the accuracy of the closed form approximation are presented and CPU times associated with some mutual impedance calculations are also included.

  • In this paper, we use particle swarm optimization (PSO) to design a randomly excited and randomly spaced linear array with either the lowest side lobe level (SLL) or the narrowest beamwidth. The positions and the excitation amplitudes of the array elements are considered as variables to be controlled. The beam pattern is optimized by controlling the two variables simultaneously and randomly. The best beam patterns are obtained using PSO in the fitness function where performance is improved by the random assignment of weight coefficients to each angular sector of the beam Pattern. The weight coefficients and angles are obtained through several trial runs. Also, an extra term, ${\beta}{\ast}BW$, is added to the fitness function to account for the beamwidth as well as the SLL. Is produces the best result for the beam pattern with either the lowest SLL or the narrowest beamwidth. In the former case, the SLL and beamwidth are about -43dB and $32.2^{\circ}$, respectively, with only 10 elements. In the latter case, the SLL and beamwidth are about -26dB and $24.2^{\circ}$, respectively.

  • Even though extensive research results have been applied to wireless cellular systems to improve their capacity and coverage, severe performance degradation experienced in cell boundary areas still remains as a major limiting factor to prohibit further improvement of user equipment (UE) throughput. In the Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) standard of the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), Some advanced techniques have been introduced to overcome this "cell-edge problem", including coordinated multipoint transmission and reception (CoMP) and inter-cell interference coordination (ICIC). In this paper, we propose yet another strategy to improve the performance of low-tier UEs by using the concept of multiple beam direction patterns (BDPs). Such multiple BDPs can be implemented using multi-layer antenna arrays stacked vertically at base station (BS) sites to transmit signals in different main beam directions. In comparison to conventional three-sector antennas with a fixed beam pattern, the proposed methods makes signal transmission in a rotational fashion to significantly enhance the reception quality of UEs located near sector (or cell) edge areas, preventing the situation where certain UEs are marginally covered by the BS for the whole transmission time. Performance evaluation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional three-sector transmission by 171% in low 5% UEs in terms of the UE throughput.
