  • Feeding Habits of Acanthogobius flavimanus collected from the eelgrass bed in Kwangyang Bay from January to December 1994 were studied. A. flavimanus was a carnivore which consumed mainly polychaetes, crabs, shrimps, gammarid amphipods and fishes. Its diets included small quantities of ophiuroids, gastropods, bivalves, caprellid amphipods, isopods and tanaids. It showed ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. Small individuals fed mainly on polychaetes and amphipods. While the consumption of polychaetes and amphipods decreased with increasing fish sin, the consumption of shrimps, crabs and fishes increased. A. flavimanus fed diverse prey organisms in adult stage. The relative proportion of the major prey items changed with season. Although the consumption of polychaetes, shrimps and gammarid amphipods was relatively high in spring and autumn, A. flavimanus fed various prey organisms in nearly equal proportions in the other seasons.

  • The feeding habits of scorpion fish, Sebastiscus marmoratus, were studied using 324 specimens collected in the coastal waters of Tongyeong, from January to December, 2009. The size of the specimens ranged from 9.8 to 30.1 cm in standard length (SL). S. marmoratusis was a piscivore that consumed mainly teleosts such as Engraulis japonicus, Clupea pallasi and gobid fishes. Of the fish species Engraulis japonicus was the most preferred prey. Its diet also includes shrimps and crabs. Hermit crabs, polychaetes, bivalves and euphausia were minor preys. Smaller individuals (<13 cm SL) fed mainly on shrimps, crabs and fishes. The proportion of shrimps and crabs decreased as body size increased, whereas the consumption of fishes gradually increased. Fishes accounted for almost stomach contents of larger individuals (more than 19 cm SL). Seasonal changes in the S. marmoratusis diet were significant. Fishes was most common prey during summer, autumn and winter, whereas crabs and shrimps were mainly consumed during spring.

  • A faunal study on the marine decapods of Gogunsan Islands located in the western part of South Korea was performed during the period from August 3 to August 5 in 2003. As a result of the present study, a total 42 species in 17 families (Macrura: four species in two families, Anomura: nine species in four families, Brachyura: 29 species in 11 families) were identified. Of these, two species of shrimp, Athanas sp. and Alpheus sp., are new to Korea. Including these two species, total 20 species in 10 families are newly known to Gogunsan Islands. Fifty two species in 19 families were previously known to occur in this area. Therefore, a total 72 species in 24 families of decapods are now known to occur in Gogunsan Islands. Of the species collected in the present study, Palaemon (Palaemon) serrifer (Stimpson, 1860) in shrimps, Macrophthalmus japonicus De Haan, 1835 living at mud area and Scopimera globosa De Haan, 1835 at sand beach in crabs, and Hapalogaster dentata (De Haan, 1849) in hermits crab were most dominant.

  • The feeding habits of Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) were studied based on the examination of stomach contents of 192 specimens collected from November, 2005 to January, 2006 in the coastal waters off Gadeok-do, Korea. The size of Pacific cod ranged from 35 to 82 cm in standard length (SL). Pacific cod mainly consumed shrimps such as Eualus spathulirostris, Crogon hakodatei and C. affinis and fishes. Its diet also included small quantities of cephalopods, amphipods, hermit crabs and crabs. Individuals between 35 cm and 45 cm SL mainly consumed shrimps. The portion of shrimps decreased with increasing fish size, and this decrease was paralleled with increased consumption of fishes and cephalopods. In this study we found Syngnathus schlegeli in the stomach contents of many Pacific cod specimens. S. schlegeli is a typical seagrass fish species which inhabits in seagrass beds, This fact means that Pacific cods stay in the seagrass beds during spawning period. Therefore migration of Pacific cod to coastal waters off Gadeok-do during spawning period seems to be a survival strategy for its larvae and small juveniles to stay in seagrass beds which provide with abundant foods and shelters to many commercial fish species.

  • The feeding habits of the Fat Greenling Hexagrammos otakii were studied using 376 specimens (17.4~41.4 cm in total length) collected off the Incheon coast, Korea between March 2020 and February 2021. H. otakii ate mainly gastropoda and teleostei, incuding caridea, brachyura, polychaeta, cephalopoda and amphipoda. The diet composition of H. otakii showed changes in season. H. otakii ate mainly cephalopoda in spring and ate mainly polychaeta in summer. The teleostei feeding rate was highest in autumn, whereas the proportion of gastropoda was higher in winter than in other seasons. The mean number of preys per stomach (mN/ST, One-way ANOVA, F=2.026, P>0.05) and mean weight of preys per stomach (mW/ST, One-way ANOVA, F=1.075, P>0.05) didn't show a statistically significant difference among size classes.

  • The Theory of Island Biogeography describes that the number of species on an island affected by island area and distance from the mainland. This study was performed to compare and analyze the community structure of the macro-invertebrates in three isolated islands, around Korean waters in terms of the Theory of Island Biogeography. Macrobenthic animals were collected using a modified underwater quadrat in August 2009. A total of 104 macrobenthic species were sampled with a mean density of 399 individuals $m^{-2}$ and biomass of 1,506.70 g $m^{-2}$. Based on the abundance and biomass data, there were 10 dominant species accounting for approximately 67.17% of total individuals. The highest densities were found in the amphipoda Amphipoda spp., the bivalvia Modiolus agripetus and Mytilus coruscus, the Sipunculida Phascolosoma scolops and the polychaeta Syllidae unid.. On the contrary, the top ten species made up 95.66% of the total biomass while the three most abundant, the bivalves M. coruscus, Streostria circumpicta and M. agripetus. The conventional multi-variate statistics (cluster analysis and non-metric multi-dimensional scaling) applied to assess spatial variation in macrobenthic assemblages. Cluster analysis and nMDS ordination analysis based on the Bray-Curtis similarity identified 2 station groups. The group 1 was consisted with Gageodo (except for lower station at Transect 2) and Dokdo station and was numerically dominated by the polychaetes Eunice antennata and Syllidae unid., the cirripedia Megabalanus rosa and the bivalvia M. coruscus. However, group 2 was associated with Sohwado station and was characterized by high abundance of the anomura Petrolisthes japonicus, the gastropoda Lirularia pygmaea and the brachiopoda Coptothyris grayi. In conclusion, these results suggested that the species diversity and community structure of macrobenthos in three isolated island seemed slightly related to island area and distance from the mainland.
