  • Databases are critical to business information systems, and RDBMS is most widely usded for the database system. Normalization has been designed to control various anomalies(insert, update, and delete anomalies). However, normalized databese design does not account for the tradeoffs necessary for the performance. In this research, we develop a model for database desin by denormalization of duplicating attributes in order to reduce frequent join processes. In this model, we consider insert, update, and delete costs. The anomalies are treated by additional disk I/O which is necessary for each insert and update transaction. We propose a branch and bound method for this model, and show considerable cost reduction.

  • Transposition of the great arteries is one of the commonest forms of severe congenital heart disease and produces severe cyanosis threatening survival from the day of birth. Anatomical anomalies which the aorta arises from the infundibulum of the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery arises from the outflow tract of the left ventricle make the deranged circulation. Survival is possible only if additional anomalies are present which allow mixing of the pulmonary and systemic circulations. Preoperative diagnosis as TGA was taken on the 15 day old female via the preoperative examination and the right cordioangiography. As palliative treatment for cyanosis, Blalock-Hanlon operation was performed in this patient. The results were good as 54 mmHg changed from 27 mmHg of $PO_2$ in aorta, but sudden cardiac arrest was developed in postoperative 12 hours. In order to confirm the cause of death and the cardiac anomalies, autopsy was performed on the date of death. The diagnosis of the autopsy showed; [1] Transposition of the Great Arteries. [2] Patent Ductus Arteriosus. [3] Patent Foramen Ovale. [4] Ventricular Septal Defect, 2 Muscular Type. [5] Double Ureter, Right. [6] Artificial Atrial Septal Defect. [7] Total Collapse of the left lung and Intraparenchymal hemorrhage of right lung.

  • Chromosomal microarray (CMA) is a high-resolution, high-throughput method of identifying submicroscopic genomic copy number variations (CNVs). CMA has been established as the first-line diagnostic test for individuals with developmental delay (DD), intellectual disability (ID), autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), and multiple congenital anomalies (MCAs). CMA analysis was performed in 42 Korean patients who had been diagnosed with unexplained DD, ID, ASDs, and MCAs. Clinically relevant CNVs were discovered in 28 patients. Variants of unknown significance were detected in 13 patients. The diagnostic yield was high (66.7%). CMA is a superior diagnostic tool compared with conventional karyotyping and fluorescent in situ hybridization.

  • A practical algorithm for prediction of the sea surface temperatures (SST)from the satellite remote sensing data is presented in this paper. The fluctuations of SST consist of deterministic normals and stochastic anomalies. Due to large thermal inertia of sea water, the SST anomalies can be modelled by autoregressive or Markov process, and its near future values can be predicted provided the recent values of SST are available. The actual SST is predicted by superposing the pre-known SST normals and the predicted SST anomalies. We applied this prediction algorithm to the NOAA AVHRR weekly SST data for 18 years (1981-1998) in the seas adjacent to Korea (115-$145^{\circ}E$, 20-$55^{\circ}N$). The algorithm is applicable not only for prediction of SST in near future but also for nowcast of SST in the cloud covered regions.

  • 100 cases of open heart surgery were done in the Dept. of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Won Kwang University Hospital from July, 1984 to October, 1986. l. Among the 100 cases, there were 51 cases [51%] of acyanotic congenital heart anomalies, 10 cases [10%] of cyanotic congenital heart anomalies and 39 cases [39%] of acquired heart disease. 2. The age distribution of 100 cases was 18 months to 56 years old and mean age was 10.8 years old in congenital heart anomalies and 34.7 years old of acquired heart disease. 3. The overall mortality was 8%. and the mortality in each entity is 5.9% in congenital acyanotic cases, 10% in congenital cyanotic cases and 10.3% in acquired valvular heart disease. 4. For myocardial protection, high concentration potassium of cold blood cardioplegic solution [30mEq/L] had been used, associated with topical cooling of ice-slush.

  • A 10-day old male calf exhibited multiple congenital anomalies of the urinary and gastrointestinal tracts, including renal fusion (horseshoe kidney), ureteral fusion, rectovesicular fistula, and atresia ani. The single kidney was fused at the caudal poles. The left kidney and cranial half of right kidney were shrunken, while the remaining lobules were hypertrophic. Ureters were fused cranially and bifurcated caudally. The terminal rectum was narrowed and connected with the bladder. The anus was imperforate. The cause of these anomalies could not be determined. This is the first report of this constellation of congenital anomalies in a calf.

  • A ring, monosomy and marker chromosome 13 was found in a 14 months old male with multiple congenital anomalies which suggested the deletion 13 syndrome. He presented development retardation, mental retardation, syndactyly of thumbs, xeroderma, dyspnea, dyslogia and face deformity diagnosed by chromosomal analysis using synchronized G-banding technique which revealed of 46,XY,r(13)(p13q34)[48]/45,XY,-13[28]/46,XY,-13,+mar[13]. We report this case with a brief review of the correlation between clinical features and the observed 13 polymorphism chromosome.

  • Humeral hemimelia is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by deficiency of the humerus with relatively intact scapular. The holstein calf was healthy expecting the deformity of forelimb humerus. The examination of PCR and serum neutralizing test was carried about BVD, akabane virus, Ibaraki virus and Kasba virus in cattle. The results were all negative. Affected calf showed forelimb deformation. Other abnormalitis was not observed in brain, spinal cord, liver, kidney and other visceral organs. Amelia are very rare limb anomalies. We report on a Holstein calf with forelimb deficiencies. This case appears humeral anomalies with ulnar and radius aplasia in calf. The condition in these calves was considered the result of a recurrence of a genetic mutation affecting a putative hemimelia locus.

  • In order to simulate and investigate the major characteristics of El Nino/Southern Oscillation(ENSO) and Madden Jullian Oscillation(MJO), an intermediate type atmosphere-ocean coupled model is developed and their results are examined. The atmosphere model is a time-dependent non-linear perturbation moist model which can determine the internal heating for itself. The counterpart of the atmosphere model is GCM-type tropical ocean model which has fine horizontal and vertical grid resolutions. In the coupled experiment, warm SST anomaly and increased precipitation and eastward wind and current anomalies associated with ENSO and MJO are properly simulated in Pacific and Indian Oceans. In spite of some discrepancies in simulation MJO, the observed atmospheric and oceanic low-frequency characteristics in the tropics are successfully identified. Among them, positive SST anomalies centered at the 100m-depth of tropical eastern-central Pacific due to the eastward advection of warm water and reduced equatorial upwelling, and negative anomalies in the Indian and western Pacific seem to be the fundamental features of tropical low-frequency oscillations.
