Present study examines the detonation wave propagation characteristics in annular channel. A normalized value of channel width to the annular radius was considered as a geometric parameter. Numerical approaches used in the previous studies of detonation wave propagation were extended to the present study with OpenMP parallelization for multicore SMP machines. The major effect of the curved geometry on the detonation wave propagation seems to be a flow compression effect, regardless of the detonation regimes. The flow compression behind the detonation wave by the curved geometry of the circular channel pushes the detonation wave front and results in the overdriven detonation waves with increased detonation speed beyond the Chapmann-Jouguet speed. This effect gets stronger as the normalized radius smaller, as expected. The effect seems to be negligible beyond the normalized radius of 10.

Present study examines detonation wave propagation characteristics in annular channel. A normalized value of channel width to the annular radius was considered as a geometric parameter. A parametric study was carried out for a various regimes of detonation waves from weakly unstable to highly unstable detonation waves. Numerical approaches that used in the previous study of numerical requirements of the simulation of detonation wave propagations in 2D and 3D channel were used also for the present study with OpenMP parallization for multi-core SMP machines.
Dual-cooled fuel with inner and outer flow channel was proposed for high burup, next generation nuclear fuel design. The annular cylinder of dual cooled fuel has higher structural strength compared to the conventional one, but also have concerns about flow induced vibration due to an additional flow of inner channel and the difference of flow velocity in between inner and outer channel. In this study, the dynamic stability of flexible, annular cylinder was evaluated according to the flow variation and compared to the that of the conventional PWR fuel rod. Centrifugal and Coriolis force by the additional flow in the inner channel were added in the dynamic equation of flexible beam in uniform, external, and axial flow. Complex eigenfrequency was calculated by the finite element method. Stability margin of annular cylinder compared to the solid cylinder and change of the dynamic characteristic are presented and discussed as a analysis results.
In this study, the laminar burning velocities of SNG fuel were studied using both experimental measurements and kinetic simulations. They were measured using the angle method of Bunsen flame configuration and the annular diverging channel combustor. And they were also numerically calculated by CHEMKIN Package with GRI 3.0 mechanisms. Spectrometer was used for characteristics of flame chemiluminescence of SNG fuels. From results of this work, first, we found that according to adding $H_2$ contents in the fuels the laminar burning velocities of SNG fuels were increased. And second, we also discovered existence of OH*, CH*, $C_2*$, HCO*, $CH_2*$ radicals and their correlation.
Direct numerical simulations (DNS) is carried out to study fully-developed turbulent concentric annular pipe flow with two radius ratios at $Re_{Dh}\;=\;8900$. In case of $R_1/R_2\;=\;0.5$, the present result for the mean flow is in good agreement with the previous experimental data. Because of the transverse curvature effects, the distributions of mean flow and turbulent intensities are asymmetric in contrast to those of other fully-developed flows (channel and pipe flow). From the distributions of skewness of radial velocity fluctuations, it co be identified that all of the characteristics of channel, pipe and turbulent flow on a cylinder in axial flow can be appeared in concentric annular pipe flow.
This study concerns flow and heat transfer characteristics of FC-72 condensing flow in a micro-channel. A computational model of condensing flow with a hydraulic diameter of 1 mm is constructed using the FLUENT computational fluid dynamics code. The computed void fraction contour plots are presented for different mass velocities. The smooth-annular, wavy-annular, transition and slug flows are observed with the model, which are quite similar to those observed in a micro-channel experiment. The computed two-phase condensing heat transfer coefficient is compared with previous empirical correlation for two-phase condensation heat transfer in micro-channels.
Flame stabilization characteristics of premixed flames in an annular coaxial 5-tubes burner (AC5TB) were investigated experimentally. The AC5TB was made of five quartz tubes, and the flame stabilization conditions in that burner were investigated with the variation of equivalence ratio and the flow velocities. Flame behaviors inside of narrow annular tubes could be observed directly. Overall flame stabilization conditions were similar to that of the previous study, while the flame behaviors and structures were different mainly due to the controlled uniform distribution of the velocities in channels. Flame flashback conditions were thought to be governed by the competition between heat release rate, heat loss and heat recirculation in each channel. Stationary flames at a fixed location were compared in its velocity distribution and burned gas temperature across the channel. This AC5TB can be a basic configuration for the development of flame stabilization model of porous media combustors, and it will help understand about the real behavior of flames in meso-scale combustion spaces.

Present study examines the detonation wave propagation characteristics in annular channels. Numerical approaches used in the previous studies were extended with marching windows technique. Parametric study has been carried out using a radius of curvature normalized by the channel width considered as unique geometric parameter. In the channels of small radius of curvature, detonation wave is unstable and the regular cell structure is not observed. There is a critical radius of curvature where cell structure can be sustained. The effect of curvature makes the pressure difference on inner and outer surfaces where the detonation wave is overdriven. The results converge to that of straight channel as the radius of curvature gets larger, as expected.
This study was performed to evaluate the prediction capability of a commercial CFD code and to investigate the effects of different geometries such as a 4.4 mm tube and an 8/10 mm annular channel on the detailed flow structures. A numerical simulation was performed for the conditions, at which the experimental data was produced by the test facility SPHINX. A 2-dimensional axisymmetric steady flow was assumed for computational simplicity. The RNG $\kappa-\varepsilon$ turbulence model (RNG) with an enhanced wall treatment option, SST $\kappa-\omega$ (SST) and low Reynolds Abid turbulence model (ABD) were employed and the numerical predictions were compared with the experimental data generated from the experiment. The effects of the geometry on heat transfer were investigated. The flow and temperature fields were also examined in order to investigate the mechanism of heat transfer near the wall. The local heat transfer coefficient predicted by the RNG model is very close to the measurement result for the tube. In contrast, the local heat transfer coefficient predicted by the SST and ABD models is closer to the measurement for the annular channel.

A CFD analysis was performed to examine the inner channel blockage of dual-cooled fuel which has being developed for the power uprate of a pressurized water reactor (PWR). The dual-cooled fuel consists of an annular fuel pellet($UO_2$) and dual claddings as well as internal and external cooling channels. The dual-cooled annular fuel is different from a conventional solid 려el by employing an internal cooling channel for each fuel pellet as well as an external cooling channel. One of the key issues is the hypothetical event of inner channel blockage because the inner channel is an isolated flow channel without the coolant mixing between the neighboring flow channels. The inner channel blockage could cause the Departure from Nucleate Boiling (DNB) in the inner channel that eventually causes a fuel failure. This paper presents the CFD simulation of the flow through the side holes of the bottom end plug for the complete entrance blockage of the inner channel. Since the amount of coolant supply to the inner channel depends on largely the pressure loss at the side hole, the pressure loss coefficient of the side hole was estimated by the CFD analysis. The CFD prediction of the loss coefficient showed a reasonable agreement with an experimental data for the complete blockage of both the inner channel entrance and the outer channel. The CFD predictions also showed the decrease of the loss coefficient as the outer channel blockage increases.
