  • The age and growth of the Pacific cod, Gadus macrocephalus were investigated using left sagittal otoliths of 682 individuals collected in the West Sea of Korea from January to December 2007. The seasonal changes in the ratio of an opaque zone to interval between annular rings revealed that the narrow translucent parts of the otolith were annual growth rings formed between February and March once a year. The spawning period was December to January and therefore the duration from fertilization to the complete formation of the opaque zone became thirteen months. From the parameters calculated using the average length when the year ring was formed, the estimated von Bertalanffy growth equations were $L_t=100.0(1-e^{-0.1640(t+0.5247)})$ for females and $L_t=64.6(1-e^{-0.3335 (t+0.3342)})$ for males when is total length in age t.

  • Gonadal developmint, age and growth of Ruditapes philippinarum were investigated using samples from the intertidal zone of Simpo on the coast of Kimje, Korea, which were collected onthly for one year from Februaty 1993 to January 1994.Ruditapes philippinarum is diecious in sex. The gonads are located between the subregion of the midintestinal glands and reticular connective tissue of the foot. The ovary is composed of a number of ovarian sacs, and the testis is composed of numerous seminiferous tubules. The clam spawns once a year from early June to darly October, and the main spawning occurred between July and August when the water temperature went above 23$^{\circ}C$. Ripe oocytes are about 65-70${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in diameter. Gonadal phases of this species can be divided into five successive stages; multiplicative(February to March), growing (April to May), mature(Aprilto Septimber), spent(June to October), and degenerative and resting(july to March). Spawning is closely related to the sea water temperature. Based on the monthly variations of marginal index (MI')of the shell, it was suggested that the annual ring mark formation occurred in March once a year and took approximately 8 months (0.67 year) for first ring to be formed on the shell. The relationship between the shell length(SL) and the total weight (TW) was represented by nonlinear equation; TW=1.208 x 10/ sup -4/ S $L^{3.158}$, and also in the relationship be-tweenthe shell length (SL) and the shell height(SH), the shell length and the shell width (SW) were represented by the linear equations; SH=0.726 SL-0.483, SW=0.542 SL-0.803.Growth curves for shell length and total weight fitted to von Bertalanffs equation were expressed as: S $L_{t}$ =68.34(1- $e^{0.221}$(t+0.418)) T $W_{t}$ =75.16(1- $e^{0.221}$(t=0.418))$^{3.158/3.158}$

  • Without annual ring, the bamboo can not measured by ordinary mensuration method. Other methods yet tried failed to prove the reliability. That means, as often pointed out, that the bamboo lumbering (including forest management) is not free from being precarious. Noting the fact, this author performed a serieds of comparative observations on a group of bamboos in different stages of growth in order to find out if there is any surer mensurability. A conclusion has been reached that the external feature of joints of branch has close connection with the age of bamboo, that the joints of the third major branch counting from the ground have, as shown in the first table, the most probability, its mean being 94.3 per cent, and that those in ages of 3 to 5 have the probability of 100 per cent, showing the far greater accuracy as compared with those in older ages. The above conclusion needs to be adjusted with the following findings; 1) When observed disregarding the joint-tongue(the remainder of the preceeding year's sheath), the major branches show no better probability than the minor ones. 54 to 78 per cent of them shows no difference between them. Probability is averaged by 60 per cent. 2) When in spring the old sheaths drop away from the joints, the new ones sprout out in their places and consequently the joints present an appearance of a kind of joint-ring. But since this joint-ring does not always exactly represent the plant age, some other method must be sought after to count the age. This author noticed what is called "joint-tongue" the tongue-like part of triangle shape which remains at the base of the sheath of the fallen leaf. A fact was ascertained that when the number of the joint-ring coincides with that of the remaining joint-tongue, it exactly indicates the age of the plant.the plant.

  • This study aims to determine the ideal feed speed of a resistograph to evaluate the number of tree rings in several tree species. The needle speed was fixed at 1,500 r/min. Herein, various tree species, such as Pseudotsuga menziesii, Pinus koraiensis, Abies holophylla, and Zelkova serrata, were considered for experiments. Results showed that the most proper feed speed for Zelkova serrata, Larix kaempferi, Pseudotsuga menziesii, Abies holophylla, and Pinus koraiensis was 75, 100, 100, 150, and 175 cm/min, respectively. However, in all the cases, the electric resistance values of tree ring narrower than 1 mm were not suitable for determining tree-ring boundaries. Upon comparing the inter-annual time series of ring widths and electric resistance values of resistograph, a meaningful synchronization was verified. If resistograph would be improved to the extent that it can measure tree rings narrower than 1 mm, it can replace the conventional method used for counting the number of tree rings in the increment cores. Additionally, it can also be used to investigate the tree growth.

  • In order to understand the effect of introduction of oyster rack culture on natural short-necked clam, Ruditapes philippinarum, stock, we investigated the status of natural clam stock prior to introduction of oyster rack culture at Yeongheung Coast of Wando Island. The growth equation of the clam was estimated as: $L_t=61.46{\cdot}(1-e^{-0.172(t+0.155)})$ from ring radius composition of shell. Instantaneous coefficient of total mortality and natural mortality were calculated as: 2.4087/year and 0.478/year, respectively. The age at first capture was estimated to be 2.55 year. The total biomass was estimated to 3.23 ton in the bed (0.8 ha). Applied by these parameters, the annual recruit biomass and the current yield per recruit (Y/R) was corresponded to $114.7individuals/m^2$ and $92.0g/m^2$, respectively. Maximum sustainable yield (MSY) was estimated 0.77 ton/year which was close to annual catches, 0.74 ton/year, in the area.

  • Age and growth of the the Jedo venus clam, Protothaca jedoensis were investigated using samples from the subtidal zone of Boryeong, Chungcheongnam- do, Korea from January to December, 1999. The relationship between shell height and ring radius in each group was expressed as a regression line. Therefore, it could be recognized that there is a correspondence in the formation of each ring. Based on the monthly variation of the marginal index of the shell, it was suggested that the annual ring mark formation occurred during the period of February to March once a year. The relationship between shell height (SH) and total weight (TW) was represented by the non-linear equation: TW = 0.0007 SH$^{2.8919}$, and also in the relationship between shell length (SL) and shell height (SH), shell height (SH) and shell width (SW) were represented by the linear equations: SL=1.1067SH+1.778, SW=0.6758SH-0.9824. Growth curves for shell height and total weight fitted to the von Bertalanffy equation were expressed as: SH$_t$ = 81.546(1-e$^{-0.176(t+0.381)}$), TW$_t$ = 227.65(1-e$^{-0.176(t+0.381)})^{2.8919}$.

  • In boreal conifers in China's Northeast area, maximum latewood density (MXD) of tree-ring varies in response to growing season temperature. Forest net productivity can be estimated using the Normalized-difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) calculated from satellite sensor data. MXD from the Mohe site in this area was compared with estimates of NPP for 1982-1999 produced by the NDVI model, which was established based on the relationship of leaf area index (LAI) and NDVI. The result shows that the MXD series correlated significantly with the NDVI model estimates series, suggesting that MXD appeared to be an appropriate index for productivity or canopy growth in region where forest productivity is strongly temperature-related.

  • The paleoclimate of the Chungbu Mountainous Region, Mts. Seorak and Sobaek, was estimated by means of dendroclimatic methodology, The annual growth value of tree-rings is deeply interrelated with the mean temperature of April-May and July-August. The mean temperature of April-May of the reconstruction period(1635-1911), observation period(1912-1989), and the whole period(1635-1989) is 13.58$^{\circ}C$, 13.69$^{\circ}C$, and 13.6$0^{\circ}C$, respectively. That of July-August is $24.50^{\circ}C$, $24.62^{\circ}C$, and $24.58^{\circ}C$ respectively. The reconstructed mean temperature data for April-May and for July-August reveal 13.2 and 12.9 year cycles.

  • The objectives of this study were to analyze environment in the forest and growth characteristics for investigating the characteristics of Robinia pseudoacacia distribution in a Pinus thunbergii forest at the coast. As a result of analyzing inhibitory factors of Robinia pseudoacacia distribution in a Pinus thunbergii forest at the coast, it is considered that the salt level included in a sea wind is supposed to be the primary factor of the slow growth for Robinia pseudoacacia since brown leaves, wilting and early leaf fall have appeared in the 0m spot from the artificial dune which has the high salt level. However, the soil properties and light environment hardly have a effect on the growth of Robinia pseudoacacia because there is no difference among planting places. Also, the growth ring of the horizontal root in 2year individuals 0.1~0.2m away from the dune have been formed for 1 year only as a consequence of analyzing growth rings of Robinia pseudoacacia growing on the coast. It can be infered that the nourishment of the horizontal root from individuals growing on the coast have been provided for the first 1 year only. It is estimated that, in case of the nearby areas on the coast, it is not enough to provided nourishment to the horizontal root due to obstructing the growth of new individuals by a sea wind, so the growth of the horizontal root would be hampered. Therefore, it is considered that impedient Robinia pseudoacacia distribution in a Pinus thunbergii forest at the coast is caused by making no growth of new horizontal roots and newborn individuals.

  • This study was performed to develope stem analysis program(Stemwin1.0) which can be used in PC with MS-Windows operating system. Stemwin1.0 uses width of annual tree ring measured with 1/100mm unit, and calculate increments of several growth factors such as DBH, height and volume with various methods. Mean DBH can be calculated by arithmetic and quadratic mean methods. Height can be estimated by parallel line, line extending and height curve methods. Volume can be estimated by Huber, Smalian, and Spline functions. Not only Total growth, Mean Annual Increment(MAI) and Current Annual Increment(CAI) of growth factors, but also merchantable volume and height, form factor, growth rate, and merchantable volume rate are automatically calculated. Stemwin1.0 can also output accurate stem taper curve with various scale, and prepare stem taper data(diameter at different disk heights) for statistical analysis for deriving stem taper model. Stemwin1.0 can export output data and graph to Excel for more compatible use of it.
