  • Pass-by noises of various trains were recorded by binaural recorder. The measured noises were evaluated using a sound pressure level and psychoacoustic metrics objectively. To analyze a binaural effect on annoyance that can be caused by train noise, auditory experiments were performed. Through the experiments, the annoyance differences between monaural and binaural train noises, the annoyance differences due to measurement angle and the annoyance differences due to kinds of train and measurement distance were determined. A correlation analysis was conducted to determine which index can affect the annoyance more strongly. As the result, a maximum rate of change of sharpness difference between left and right channels was proposed to predict the annoyance.

  • The aim of this study was to determine principal non-acoustical factors for noise annoyance in the vicinity of Kimpo Airport in Seoul, Korea. Noise annoyance was estimated using self-reported annoyance scale. We have conducted a social survey aiming to identify the main sound sources, evaluate the annoyance and analyse the main effects of noise on people. Acoustical and non-acoustical variables are expected to greatly affect annoyance responses. This study divided acoustical variables into aircraft, road traffic and neighboring noises, and non-acoustical variables into demographic, situational and attitudinal variables. The study performed multiple regression analysis to determine the influences each variable has on annoyance responses. Acoustical variables affect noise annoyance to aircraft and neighboring noise except road traffic noise. For road traffic and neighboring noise annoyance was affected by non-acoustical variable, insulation by housing type. For aircraft noise, main noise source of this area, annoyance was affected by acoustical variable and some non-acoustical variables, mainly exposure time.

  • Predicted noise level has been used to assess the annoyance response since noise map was generalized and being the normal method to assess the environmental noise. Unfortunately using predicted noise level to derive the annoyance prediction curve caused some problems. The data have to be grouped manually to use the annoyance prediction curve. The aim of this paper is to propose the method to handle the predicted noise level and the survey data for annoyance prediction curve. This paper used the percentage of persons annoyed(%A) and the percentage of persons highly annoyed as the descriptor of noise annoyance in a population. The logistic regression method was used for deriving annoyance prediction curve. It is concluded that the method of dichotomizing data and logistic regression was suitable to handle the predicted noise level and survey data.

  • Studies of community annoyance caused by civil aircraft noise exposure were carried out in fifteen areas near Gimpo and Gimhae international airports, Korea, to accumulate social survey data in Korea and to assess the relationship between aircraft noise level and degree of annoyance. Aircraft noise levels were measured automatically by airport noise monitoring system, B&K type 3597. A social survey was carried out people living within In meters of noise measurement points, as a rule. Questionnaires were only aggregated face-to-face interviews using various questions which concerned with demographic, degree of noise annoyance, interference with daily activities and health-related symptoms. The questions of noise annoyance were answered on an 11-point numerical scale. The respondents, from 18 to 70 years of age, were randomly selected and completed the questionnaire themselves. The total number of respondents for the questionnaires was 554.

  • This study investigates the effects of Interaural Cross-correlation(IACC) and its variation on annoyance of the heavy-weight impact sounds. Subjects evaluated the annoyance of the heavy-weight floor impact sounds recorded in rooms of apartments which have different sound insulation treatments; furnished and occupied conditions are characterized by the ACF/IACF factors. A paired comparison test was conducted using the impact sound sources whose IACC and variation of IACC values were different. It was found that IACC is inversely correlated with the scale value(r=-0.62) whereas the variation of IACC is not(r=-0.34). On the contrary, ${\Phi}(0)$ is highly correlated with scale value of annoyance and ${\Phi}(0)$ is need to be controlled as constant to find the effect of IACC on annoyance.

  • Recently a number of social surveys on community response to environmental noises have been conducted. Since standardized noise annoyance scales were needed to compare the results from various areas. ICBEN(International Commission on Biological of Noise) Team 6 planned a international joint study and constructed comparable standardized noise annoyance scales using the same method. In Korea the survey was conducted in four areas such as Seoul, Taejon, Taegu and Kwangju. About 100 subjects participated in each area approximately. The 21 adverbs were first in the carly survey, and five verbal annoyance modifiers were finally constructed as follows; 1(Jeonhyo), 2(Jokm), 3(Bikyojerk)m, 4(Ajoo), 5(Umcheongnage)

  • In this study, the sensitivity of annoyance was investigated by the subjective jury test for the variations of the frequency components along with various sound pressure levels of sixteen environmental noise sources. Annoyance was, also, evaluated for the road traffic noises. Sound pressure levels were $54{\sim}84\;dB$ which individually divided frequency components with eight bands of equally three bark bands. The results show that vehicle traffic noise is recognized as the most serious environment noise source. The sensitivity of human perception of annoyance in frequency bands is quite different from A-weighting curve. The annoyance found out to be more sensitive in high frequency region and reached its maximum in 3.4 kHz.

  • This study examine the annoyance of transportation noise exposure and found the survey method about which noise induces more disturbance or annoyance when more than two kinds of noise exist. This study describes the noise annoyance survey performed in the vicinity of Sin-wol interchange. This residential area was exposed to aircraft noise and traffic noise simultaneously and aircraft noise exposure of this area is about 81 WECPNL, traffic noise exposure is about 81.2 dB(A) nearby road. Noise sources are grouped into three part, traffic noise, aircraft noise and community noise. The questionnaire includes how often, how loud each noise is heard. Also this deals with comparative annoyance reaction from specific noise sources such as aircraft or traffic and its disturbance of daily activities. Facade noise mapping are executed by using a commercial noise mapping software.

  • The multiple regression analysis and path analysis in each dominant area of noise source are conducted to analyze the relationship between dependent variables like annoyance and independent ones such as noise and non-noise factors. The multiple regression analysis shows that impact of noise factors is the highest to annoyance in dominant areas of road traffic and railway noise. Meanwhile, impact of non-noise factors such as sensitivity and satisfaction of environment on annoyance is also high in these areas. The path analysis result for multivariate analysis between various independent and dependent variables is similar to that of the multiple regression analysis. However, noise factor is the greatest factor influent on annoyance in the dominant areas of the combined noise, and relationship between annoyance and sensitivity is the highest in combined area exposed to road traffic noise and railway noise.
